हरि का नामु जन कउ भोग जोग ॥
The Name of the Lord is the enjoyment and Yoga of His servants.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਬਿਓਗੁ ॥
Har Naam Japath Kashh Naahi Bioug ||
हरि नामु जपत कछु नाहि बिओगु ॥
Chanting the Lord's Name, there is no separation from Him.
ਜਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
Jan Raathaa Har Naam Kee Saevaa ||
जनु राता हरि नाम की सेवा ॥
His servants are imbued with the service of the Lord's Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥੬॥
Naanak Poojai Har Har Dhaevaa ||6||
नानक पूजै हरि हरि देवा ॥६॥
O Nanak, worship the Lord, the Lord Divine, Har, Har. ||6||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਮਾਲੁ ਖਜੀਨਾ ॥
Har Har Jan Kai Maal Khajeenaa ||
हरि हरि जन कै मालु खजीना ॥
The Lord's Name, Har, Har, is the treasure of wealth of His servants.
ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦੀਨਾ ॥
Har Dhhan Jan Ko Aap Prabh Dheenaa ||
हरि धनु जन कउ आपि प्रभि दीना ॥
The treasure of the Lord has been bestowed on His servants by God Himself.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਓਟ ਸਤਾਣੀ ॥
Har Har Jan Kai Outt Sathaanee ||
हरि हरि जन कै ओट सताणी ॥
The Lord, Har, Har is the All-powerful Protection of His servants.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿ ਜਨ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
Har Prathaap Jan Avar N Jaanee ||
हरि प्रतापि जन अवर न जाणी ॥
His servants know no other than the Lord's Magnificence.
ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
Outh Poth Jan Har Ras Raathae ||
ओति पोति जन हरि रसि राते ॥
Through and through, His servants are imbued with the Lord's Love.
ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਸ ਮਾਤੇ ॥
Sunn Samaadhh Naam Ras Maathae ||
सुंन समाधि नाम रस माते ॥
In deepest Samaadhi, they are intoxicated with the essence of the Naam.
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ ॥
Aath Pehar Jan Har Har Japai ||
आठ पहर जनु हरि हरि जपै ॥
Twenty-four hours a day, His servants chant Har, Har.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਗਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਨਹੀ ਛਪੈ ॥
Har Kaa Bhagath Pragatt Nehee Shhapai ||
हरि का भगतु प्रगट नही छपै ॥
The devotees of the Lord are known and respected; they do not hide in secrecy.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਕਰੇ ॥
Har Kee Bhagath Mukath Bahu Karae ||
हरि की भगति मुकति बहु करे ॥
Through devotion to the Lord, many have been liberated.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਤਰੇ ॥੭॥
Naanak Jan Sang Kaethae Tharae ||7||
नानक जन संगि केते तरे ॥७॥
O Nanak, along with His servants, many others are saved. ||7||
ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ॥
Paarajaath Eihu Har Ko Naam ||
पारजातु इहु हरि को नाम ॥
This Elysian Tree of miraculous powers is the Name of the Lord.
ਕਾਮਧੇਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਮ ॥
Kaamadhhaen Har Har Gun Gaam ||
कामधेन हरि हरि गुण गाम ॥
The Khaamadhayn, the cow of miraculous powers, is the singing of the Glory of the Lord's Name, Har, Har.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ॥
Sabh Thae Ootham Har Kee Kathhaa ||
सभ ते ऊतम हरि की कथा ॥
Highest of all is the Lord's Speech.
ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਦਰਦ ਦੁਖ ਲਥਾ ॥
Naam Sunath Dharadh Dhukh Lathhaa ||
नामु सुनत दरद दुख लथा ॥
Hearing the Naam, pain and sorrow are removed.
ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਸੰਤ ਰਿਦ ਵਸੈ ॥
Naam Kee Mehimaa Santh Ridh Vasai ||
नाम की महिमा संत रिद वसै ॥
The Glory of the Naam abides in the hearts of His Saints.
ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪਿ ਦੁਰਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਨਸੈ ॥
Santh Prathaap Dhurath Sabh Nasai ||
संत प्रतापि दुरतु सभु नसै ॥
By the Saint's kind intervention, all guilt is dispelled.
ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Santh Kaa Sang Vaddabhaagee Paaeeai ||
संत का संगु वडभागी पाईऐ ॥
The Society of the Saints is obtained by great good fortune.
ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
Santh Kee Saevaa Naam Dhhiaaeeai ||
संत की सेवा नामु धिआईऐ ॥
Serving the Saint, one meditates on the Naam.
ਨਾਮ ਤੁਲਿ ਕਛੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
Naam Thul Kashh Avar N Hoe ||
नाम तुलि कछु अवरु न होइ ॥
There is nothing equal to the Naam.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੨॥

O Nanak, rare are those, who, as Gurmukh, obtain the Naam. ||8||2||

बहु सासत्र बहु सिम्रिती पेखे सरब ढढोलि ॥
The many Shaastras and the many Simritees - I have seen and searched through them all.
ਪੂਜਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਅਮੋਲ ॥੧॥

पूजसि नाही हरि हरे नानक नाम अमोल ॥१॥
They are not equal to Har, Haray - O Nanak, the Lord's Invaluable Name. ||1||

Chanting, intense meditation, spiritual wisdom and all meditations;
ਖਟ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਵਖਿਆਨ ॥
Khatt Saasathr Simrith Vakhiaan ||
खट सासत्र सिम्रिति वखिआन ॥
The six schools of philosophy and sermons on the scriptures;
ਜੋਗ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਮ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਕਿਰਿਆ ॥
Jog Abhiaas Karam Dhhram Kiriaa ||
जोग अभिआस करम ध्रम किरिआ ॥
The practice of Yoga and righteous conduct;
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਬਨ ਮਧੇ ਫਿਰਿਆ ॥
Sagal Thiaag Ban Madhhae Firiaa ||
सगल तिआगि बन मधे फिरिआ ॥
The renunciation of everything and wandering around in the wilderness;
ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕੀਏ ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨਾ ॥
Anik Prakaar Keeeae Bahu Jathanaa ||
अनिक प्रकार कीए बहु जतना ॥
The performance of all sorts of works;
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਹੋਮੇ ਬਹੁ ਰਤਨਾ ॥
Punn Dhaan Homae Bahu Rathanaa ||
पुंन दान होमे बहु रतना ॥
Donations to charities and offerings of jewels to fire;
ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਇ ਹੋਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
Sareer Kattaae Homai Kar Raathee ||
सरीरु कटाइ होमै करि राती ॥
Cutting the body apart and making the pieces into ceremonial fire offerings;
ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤੀ ॥
Varath Naem Karai Bahu Bhaathee ||
वरत नेम करै बहु भाती ॥
Keeping fasts and making vows of all sorts
ਨਹੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥
Nehee Thul Raam Naam Beechaar ||
नही तुलि राम नाम बीचार ॥
- none of these are equal to the contemplation of the Name of the Lord,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ॥੧॥
Naanak Guramukh Naam Japeeai Eik Baar ||1||
नानक गुरमुखि नामु जपीऐ इक बार ॥१॥
O Nanak, if, as Gurmukh, one chants the Naam, even once. ||1||
ਨਉ ਖੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਚਿਰੁ ਜੀਵੈ ॥
No Khandd Prithhamee Firai Chir Jeevai ||
नउ खंड प्रिथमी फिरै चिरु जीवै ॥
You may roam over the nine continents of the world and live a very long life;
ਮਹਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ ਤਪੀਸਰੁ ਥੀਵੈ ॥
Mehaa Oudhaas Thapeesar Thheevai ||
महा उदासु तपीसरु थीवै ॥
You may become a great ascetic and a master of disciplined meditation
ਅਗਨਿ ਮਾਹਿ ਹੋਮਤ ਪਰਾਨ ॥
Agan Maahi Homath Paraan ||
अगनि माहि होमत परान ॥
And burn yourself in fire;
ਕਨਿਕ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਹੈਵਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਦਾਨ ॥
Kanik Asv Haivar Bhoom Dhaan ||
कनिक अस्व हैवर भूमि दान ॥
You may give away gold, horses, elephants and land;
ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਆਸਨ ॥
Nioulee Karam Karai Bahu Aasan ||
निउली करम करै बहु आसन ॥
You may practice techniques of inner cleansing and all sorts of Yogic postures;
ਜੈਨ ਮਾਰਗ ਸੰਜਮ ਅਤਿ ਸਾਧਨ ॥
Jain Maarag Sanjam Ath Saadhhan ||
जैन मारग संजम अति साधन ॥
You may adopt the self-mortifying ways of the Jains and great spiritual disciplines;
ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਕਰਿ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਵੈ ॥
Nimakh Nimakh Kar Sareer Kattaavai ||
निमख निमख करि सरीरु कटावै ॥
Piece by piece, you may cut your body apart;
ਤਉ ਭੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
Tho Bhee Houmai Mail N Jaavai ||
तउ भी हउमै मैलु न जावै ॥
But even so, the filth of your ego shall not depart.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
Har Kae Naam Samasar Kashh Naahi ||
हरि के नाम समसरि कछु नाहि ॥
There is nothing equal to the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
Naanak Guramukh Naam Japath Gath Paahi ||2||
नानक गुरमुखि नामु जपत गति पाहि ॥२॥
O Nanak, as Gurmukh, chant the Naam, and obtain salvation. ||2||
ਮਨ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਹ ਛੁਟੈ ॥
Man Kaamanaa Theerathh Dhaeh Shhuttai ||
मन कामना तीरथ देह छुटै ॥
With your mind filled with desire, you may give up your body at a sacred shrine of pilgrimage;
ਗਰਬੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਹੁਟੈ ॥
Garab Gumaan N Man Thae Huttai ||
गरबु गुमानु न मन ते हुटै ॥
But even so, egotistical pride shall not be removed from your mind.
ਸੋਚ ਕਰੈ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਅਰੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
Soch Karai Dhinas Ar Raath ||
सोच करै दिनसु अरु राति ॥
You may practice cleansing day and night,
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
Man Kee Mail N Than Thae Jaath ||
मन की मैलु न तन ते जाति ॥
But the filth of your mind shall not leave your body.
ਇਸੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਧਨਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
Eis Dhaehee Ko Bahu Saadhhanaa Karai ||
इसु देही कउ बहु साधना करै ॥
You may subject your body to all sorts of disciplines,
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਟਰੈ ॥
Man Thae Kabehoo N Bikhiaa Ttarai ||
मन ते कबहू न बिखिआ टरै ॥
But your mind will never be rid of its corruption.
ਜਲਿ ਧੋਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਦੇਹ ਅਨੀਤਿ ॥
Jal Dhhovai Bahu Dhaeh Aneeth ||
जलि धोवै बहु देह अनीति ॥
You may wash this transitory body with loads of water,
ਸੁਧ ਕਹਾ ਹੋਇ ਕਾਚੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥
Sudhh Kehaa Hoe Kaachee Bheeth ||
सुध कहा होइ काची भीति ॥
But how can a wall of mud be washed clean?
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਊਚ ॥
Man Har Kae Naam Kee Mehimaa Ooch ||
मन हरि के नाम की महिमा ऊच ॥
O my mind, the Glorious Praise of the Name of the Lord is the highest;
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਪਤਿਤ ਬਹੁ ਮੂਚ ॥੩॥
Naanak Naam Oudhharae Pathith Bahu Mooch ||3||
नानक नामि उधरे पतित बहु मूच ॥३॥
O Nanak, the Naam has saved so many of the worst sinners. ||3||
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥
Bahuth Siaanap Jam Kaa Bho Biaapai ||
बहुतु सिआणप जम का भउ बिआपै ॥
Even with great cleverness, the fear of death clings to you.
