ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਸੁਖਿ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਸੋਈ ਹੈ ॥
Andhhakaar Sukh Kabehi N Soee Hai ||
अंधकार सुखि कबहि न सोई है ॥
In the darkness, no one can sleep in peace.
ਰਾਜਾ ਰੰਕੁ ਦੋਊ ਮਿਲਿ ਰੋਈ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
Raajaa Rank Dhooo Mil Roee Hai ||1||
राजा रंकु दोऊ मिलि रोई है ॥१॥
The king and the pauper both weep and cry. ||1||
ਜਉ ਪੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਹਿਬੋ ॥
Jo Pai Rasanaa Raam N Kehibo ||
जउ पै रसना रामु न कहिबो ॥
As long as the tongue does not chant the Lord's Name,
ਉਪਜਤ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਰੋਵਤ ਰਹਿਬੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Oupajath Binasath Rovath Rehibo ||1|| Rehaao ||
उपजत बिनसत रोवत रहिबो ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The person continues coming and going in reincarnation, crying out in pain. ||1||Pause||
ਜਸ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਤਰਵਰ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
Jas Dhaekheeai Tharavar Kee Shhaaeiaa ||
जस देखीऐ तरवर की छाइआ ॥
It is like the shadow of a tree;
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਗਏ ਕਹੁ ਕਾ ਕੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
Praan Geae Kahu Kaa Kee Maaeiaa ||2||
प्रान गए कहु का की माइआ ॥२॥
When the breath of life passes out of the mortal being, tell me, what becomes of his wealth? ||2||
ਜਸ ਜੰਤੀ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
Jas Janthee Mehi Jeeo Samaanaa ||
जस जंती महि जीउ समाना ॥
It is like the music contained in the instrument;
ਮੂਏ ਮਰਮੁ ਕੋ ਕਾ ਕਰ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
Mooeae Maram Ko Kaa Kar Jaanaa ||3||
मूए मरमु को का कर जाना ॥३॥
How can anyone know the secret of the dead? ||3||
ਹੰਸਾ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਰੀਰ ॥

हंसा सरवरु कालु सरीर ॥
Like the swan on the lake, death hovers over the body.
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਨ ਪੀਉ ਰੇ ਕਬੀਰ ॥੪॥੮॥

राम रसाइन पीउ रे कबीर ॥४॥८॥
Drink in the Lord's sweet elixir, Kabeer. ||4||8||

ਜੋਤਿ ਕੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੀ ਜੋਤੀ ॥
Joth Kee Jaath Jaath Kee Jothee ||
जोति की जाति जाति की जोती ॥
The creation is born of the Light, and the Light is in the creation.
ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੇ ਕੰਚੂਆ ਫਲ ਮੋਤੀ ॥੧॥
Thith Laagae Kanchooaa Fal Mothee ||1||
तितु लागे कंचूआ फल मोती ॥१॥
It bears two fruits: the false glass and the true pearl. ||1||
ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਘਰੁ ਜੋ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
Kavan S Ghar Jo Nirabho Keheeai ||
कवनु सु घरु जो निरभउ कहीऐ ॥
Where is that home, which is said to be free of fear?
ਭਉ ਭਜਿ ਜਾਇ ਅਭੈ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bho Bhaj Jaae Abhai Hoe Reheeai ||1|| Rehaao ||
भउ भजि जाइ अभै होइ रहीऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
There, fear is dispelled and one lives without fear. ||1||Pause||
ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
Thatt Theerathh Nehee Man Patheeaae ||
तटि तीरथि नही मनु पतीआइ ॥
On the banks of sacred rivers, the mind is not appeased.
ਚਾਰ ਅਚਾਰ ਰਹੇ ਉਰਝਾਇ ॥੨॥
Chaar Achaar Rehae Ourajhaae ||2||
चार अचार रहे उरझाइ ॥२॥
People remain entangled in good and bad deeds. ||2||
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਦੁਇ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨ ॥
Paap Punn Dhue Eaek Samaan ||
पाप पुंन दुइ एक समान ॥
Sin and virtue are both the same.
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਗੁਨ ਆਨ ॥੩॥
Nij Ghar Paaras Thajahu Gun Aan ||3||
निज घरि पारसु तजहु गुन आन ॥३॥
In the home of your own being, is the Philosopher's Stone; renounce your search for any other virtue. ||3||

ਜੋ ਜਨ ਪਰਮਿਤਿ ਪਰਮਨੁ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
Jo Jan Paramith Paraman Jaanaa ||
जो जन परमिति परमनु जाना ॥
He claims to know the Lord, who is beyond measure and beyond thought;
ਬਾਤਨ ਹੀ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
Baathan Hee Baikunth Samaanaa ||1||
बातन ही बैकुंठ समाना ॥१॥
By mere words, he plans to enter heaven. ||1||
ਨਾ ਜਾਨਾ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਕਹਾ ਹੀ ॥
Naa Jaanaa Baikunth Kehaa Hee ||
ना जाना बैकुंठ कहा ही ॥
I do not know where heaven is.
ਜਾਨੁ ਜਾਨੁ ਸਭਿ ਕਹਹਿ ਤਹਾ ਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jaan Jaan Sabh Kehehi Thehaa Hee ||1|| Rehaao ||
जानु जानु सभि कहहि तहा ही ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Everyone claims that he plans to go there. ||1||Pause||
ਕਹਨ ਕਹਾਵਨ ਨਹ ਪਤੀਅਈ ਹੈ ॥
Kehan Kehaavan Neh Patheeaee Hai ||
कहन कहावन नह पतीअई है ॥
By mere talk, the mind is not appeased.
ਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
Tho Man Maanai Jaa Thae Houmai Jee Hai ||2||
तउ मनु मानै जा ते हउमै जई है ॥२॥
The mind is only appeased, when egotism is conquered. ||2||
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਮਨਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਕੀ ਆਸ ॥
Jab Lag Man Baikunth Kee Aas ||
जब लगु मनि बैकुंठ की आस ॥
As long as the mind is filled with the desire for heaven,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਹੀ ਚਰਨ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੩॥
Thab Lag Hoe Nehee Charan Nivaas ||3||
तब लगु होइ नही चरन निवासु ॥३॥
He does not dwell at the Lord's Feet. ||3||
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਾਹਿ ॥
Kahu Kabeer Eih Keheeai Kaahi ||
कहु कबीर इह कहीऐ काहि ॥
Says Kabeer, unto whom should I tell this?
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠੈ ਆਹਿ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
Saadhhasangath Baikunthai Aahi ||4||10||
साधसंगति बैकुंठै आहि ॥४॥१०॥
The Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is heaven. ||4||10||

ਉਪਜੈ ਨਿਪਜੈ ਨਿਪਜਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
Oupajai Nipajai Nipaj Samaaee ||
उपजै निपजै निपजि समाई ॥
We are born, and we grow, and having grown, we pass away.
ਨੈਨਹ ਦੇਖਤ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥
Naineh Dhaekhath Eihu Jag Jaaee ||1||
नैनह देखत इहु जगु जाई ॥१॥
Before our very eyes, this world is passing away. ||1||
ਲਾਜ ਨ ਮਰਹੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
Laaj N Marahu Kehahu Ghar Maeraa ||
लाज न मरहु कहहु घरु मेरा ॥
How can you not die of shame, claiming, ""This world is mine""?
ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंत की बार नही कछु तेरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
At the very last moment, nothing is yours. ||1||Pause||
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਪਾਲੀ ॥
Anik Jathan Kar Kaaeiaa Paalee ||
अनिक जतन करि काइआ पाली ॥
Trying various methods, you cherish your body,
ਮਰਤੀ ਬਾਰ ਅਗਨਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਲੀ ॥੨॥
Marathee Baar Agan Sang Jaalee ||2||
मरती बार अगनि संगि जाली ॥२॥
But at the time of death, it is burned in the fire. ||2||
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਮਰਦਨ ਅੰਗਾ ॥
Choaa Chandhan Maradhan Angaa ||
चोआ चंदनु मरदन अंगा ॥
You apply sandalwood oil to your limbs,
ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਜਲੈ ਕਾਠ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਾ ॥੩॥
So Than Jalai Kaath Kai Sangaa ||3||
सो तनु जलै काठ कै संगा ॥३॥
But that body is burned with the firewood. ||3||
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਗੁਨੀਆ ॥
Kahu Kabeer Sunahu Rae Guneeaa ||
कहु कबीर सुनहु रे गुनीआ ॥
Says Kabeer, listen, O virtuous people:
ਬਿਨਸੈਗੋ ਰੂਪੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀਆ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
Binasaigo Roop Dhaekhai Sabh Dhuneeaa ||4||11||
बिनसैगो रूपु देखै सभ दुनीआ ॥४॥११॥
Your beauty shall vanish, as the whole world watches. ||4||11||

ਅਵਰ ਮੂਏ ਕਿਆ ਸੋਗੁ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥

अवर मूए किआ सोगु करीजै ॥
Why do you cry and mourn, when another person dies?
ਤਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਜਉ ਆਪਨ ਜੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
Tho Keejai Jo Aapan Jeejai ||1||
तउ कीजै जउ आपन जीजै ॥१॥
Do so only if you yourself are to live. ||1||
ਮੈ ਨ ਮਰਉ ਮਰਿਬੋ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
Mai N Maro Maribo Sansaaraa ||
मै न मरउ मरिबो संसारा ॥
I shall not die as the rest of the world dies,
ਅਬ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਹੈ ਜੀਆਵਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Ab Mohi Miliou Hai Jeeaavanehaaraa ||1|| Rehaao ||
अब मोहि मिलिओ है जीआवनहारा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
For now I have met the life-giving Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਇਆ ਦੇਹੀ ਪਰਮਲ ਮਹਕੰਦਾ ॥
Eiaa Dhaehee Paramal Mehakandhaa ||
इआ देही परमल महकंदा ॥
People anoint their bodies with fragrant oils,
ਤਾ ਸੁਖ ਬਿਸਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥੨॥
Thaa Sukh Bisarae Paramaanandhaa ||2||
ता सुख बिसरे परमानंदा ॥२॥
And in that pleasure, they forget the supreme bliss. ||2||
ਕੂਅਟਾ ਏਕੁ ਪੰਚ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
Kooattaa Eaek Panch Panihaaree ||
कूअटा एकु पंच पनिहारी ॥
There is one well, and five water-carriers.
ਟੂਟੀ ਲਾਜੁ ਭਰੈ ਮਤਿ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
Ttoottee Laaj Bharai Math Haaree ||3||
टूटी लाजु भरै मति हारी ॥३॥
Even though the rope is broken, the fools continue trying to draw water. ||3||
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
Kahu Kabeer Eik Budhh Beechaaree ||
कहु कबीर इक बुधि बीचारी ॥
Says Kabeer, through contemplation, I have obtained this one understanding.
ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਕੂਅਟਾ ਨਾ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੧੨॥
Naa Ouhu Kooattaa Naa Panihaaree ||4||12||
ना ओहु कूअटा ना पनिहारी ॥४॥१२॥
There is no well, and no water-carrier. ||4||12||

The mobile and immobile creatures, insects and moths
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਕੀਏ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗਾ ॥੧॥

अनिक जनम कीए बहु रंगा ॥१॥
