DHADHA: The dust of the feet of the Saints is sacred.
ਧਨਿ ਤੇਊ ਜਿਹ ਰੁਚ ਇਆ ਮਨੂਆ ॥
Dhhan Thaeoo Jih Ruch Eiaa Manooaa ||
धनि तेऊ जिह रुच इआ मनूआ ॥
Blessed are those whose minds are filled with this longing.
ਧਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਛਹਿ ਸੁਰਗ ਨ ਆਛਹਿ ॥
Dhhan Nehee Baashhehi Surag N Aashhehi ||
धनु नही बाछहि सुरग न आछहि ॥
They do not seek wealth, and they do not desire paradise.
ਅਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਰਜ ਰਾਚਹਿ ॥
Ath Pria Preeth Saadhh Raj Raachehi ||
अति प्रिअ प्रीति साध रज राचहि ॥
They are immersed in the deep love of their Beloved, and the dust of the feet of the Holy.

धंधे कहा बिआपहि ताहू ॥
How can worldly affairs affect those
ਜੋ ਏਕ ਛਾਡਿ ਅਨ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੂ ॥
Jo Eaek Shhaadd An Kathehi N Jaahoo ||
जो एक छाडि अन कतहि न जाहू ॥
Who do not abandon the One Lord, and who go nowhere else?
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੀਐ ਦੀਓ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਮ ॥

जा कै हीऐ दीओ प्रभ नाम ॥
One whose heart is filled with God's Name,

अनिक भेख अरु ङिआन धिआन मनहठि मिलिअउ न कोइ ॥
By all sorts of religious robes, knowledge, meditation and stubborn-mindedness, no one has ever met God.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ਭਗਤੁ ਙਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
Kahu Naanak Kirapaa Bhee Bhagath N(g)iaanee Soe ||1||
कहु नानक किरपा भई भगतु ङिआनी सोइ ॥१॥
Says Nanak, those upon whom God showers His Mercy, are devotees of spiritual wisdom. ||1||

NGANGA: Spiritual wisdom is not obtained by mere words of mouth.

अनिक जुगति सासत्र करि भातउ ॥
It is not obtained through the various debates of the Shaastras and scriptures.
ਙਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਸੋਊ ॥

ङिआनी सोइ जा कै द्रिड़ सोऊ ॥
They alone are spiritually wise, whose minds are firmly fixed on the Lord.
ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਛੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਊ ॥
Kehath Sunath Kashh Jog N Hooo ||
कहत सुनत कछु जोगु न होऊ ॥
Hearing and telling stories, no one attains Yoga.
ਙਿਆਨੀ ਰਹਤ ਆਗਿਆ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥
N(g)iaanee Rehath Aagiaa Dhrirr Jaa Kai ||
ङिआनी रहत आगिआ द्रिड़ु जा कै ॥
They alone are spiritually wise, who remain firmly committed to the Lord's Command.
ਉਸਨ ਸੀਤ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸਭ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥
Ousan Seeth Samasar Sabh Thaa Kai ||
उसन सीत समसरि सभ ता कै ॥
Heat and cold are all the same to them.
ਙਿਆਨੀ ਤਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
N(g)iaanee Thath Guramukh Beechaaree ||
ङिआनी ततु गुरमुखि बीचारी ॥
The true people of spiritual wisdom are the Gurmukhs, who contemplate the essence of reality;

आवन आए स्रिसटि महि बिनु बूझे पसु ढोर ॥
Those who have come into the world without understanding are like animals and beasts.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋ ਬੁਝੈ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਭਾਗ ਮਥੋਰ ॥੧॥
Naanak Guramukh So Bujhai Jaa Kai Bhaag Mathhor ||1||
नानक गुरमुखि सो बुझै जा कै भाग मथोर ॥१॥
O Nanak, those who become Gurmukh understand; upon their foreheads is such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||

ਯਾ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਏਕਹਿ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥
Yaa Jug Mehi Eaekehi Ko Aaeiaa ||
या जुग महि एकहि कउ आइआ ॥
They have come into this world to meditate on the One Lord.
ਜਨਮਤ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Janamath Mohiou Mohanee Maaeiaa ||
जनमत मोहिओ मोहनी माइआ ॥
But ever since their birth, they have been enticed by the fascination of Maya.
ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਟ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਤਪ ਕਰਤੇ ॥
Garabh Kuntt Mehi Ouradhh Thap Karathae ||
गरभ कुंट महि उरध तप करते ॥
Upside-down in the chamber of the womb, they performed intense meditation.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਹਤੇ ॥
Saas Saas Simarath Prabh Rehathae ||
सासि सासि सिमरत प्रभु रहते ॥
They remembered God in meditation with each and every breath.
ਉਰਝਿ ਪਰੇ ਜੋ ਛੋਡਿ ਛਡਾਨਾ ॥
Ourajh Parae Jo Shhodd Shhaddaanaa ||
उरझि परे जो छोडि छडाना ॥
But now, they are entangled in things which they must leave behind.
ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਨਾ ॥
Dhaevanehaar Manehi Bisaraanaa ||
देवनहारु मनहि बिसराना ॥
They forget the Great Giver from their minds.
ਧਾਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
Dhhaarahu Kirapaa Jisehi Gusaaee ||
धारहु किरपा जिसहि गुसाई ॥
O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord showers
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੬॥
Eith Outh Naanak This Bisarahu Naahee ||6||
इत उत नानक तिसु बिसरहु नाही ॥६॥
His Mercy, do not forget Him, here or hereafter. ||6||

Aavath Hukam Binaas Hukam Aagiaa Bhinn N Koe ||
आवत हुकमि बिनास हुकमि आगिआ भिंन न कोइ ॥
By His Command, we come, and by His Command, we go; no one is beyond His Command.
ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਮਿਟੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
Aavan Jaanaa Thih Mittai Naanak Jih Man Soe ||1||
आवन जाना तिह मिटै नानक जिह मनि सोइ ॥१॥
Coming and going in reincarnation is ended, O Nanak, for those whose minds are filled with the Lord. ||1||

This soul has lived in many wombs.
ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਮੀਠ ਜੋਨਿ ਫਾਸੇ ॥
Moh Magan Meeth Jon Faasae ||
मोह मगन मीठ जोनि फासे ॥
Enticed by sweet attachment, it has been trapped in reincarnation.
ਇਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੇ ॥
Ein Maaeiaa Thrai Gun Bas Keenae ||
इनि माइआ त्रै गुण बसि कीने ॥
This Maya has subjugated beings through the three qualities.
ਆਪਨ ਮੋਹ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਨੇ ॥
Aapan Moh Ghattae Ghatt Dheenae ||
आपन मोह घटे घटि दीने ॥
Maya has infused attachment to itself in each and every heart.
ਏ ਸਾਜਨ ਕਛੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
Eae Saajan Kashh Kehahu Oupaaeiaa ||
ए साजन कछु कहहु उपाइआ ॥
O friend, tell me some way,
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤਰਉ ਬਿਖਮ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Jaa Thae Tharo Bikham Eih Maaeiaa ||
जा ते तरउ बिखम इह माइआ ॥
By which I may swim across this treacherous ocean of Maya.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
Kar Kirapaa Sathasang Milaaeae ||
करि किरपा सतसंगि मिलाए ॥
The Lord showers His Mercy, and leads us to join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਮਾਏ ॥੭॥

नानक ता कै निकटि न माए ॥७॥

Kirath Kamaavan Subh Asubh Keenae Thin Prabh Aap ||
किरत कमावन सुभ असुभ कीने तिनि प्रभि आपि ॥
God Himself causes one to perform good and bad actions.
ਪਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥੧॥
Pas Aapan Ho Ho Karai Naanak Bin Har Kehaa Kamaath ||1||
पसु आपन हउ हउ करै नानक बिनु हरि कहा कमाति ॥१॥
The beast indulges in egotism, selfishness and conceit; O Nanak, without the Lord, what can anyone do? ||1||

The One Lord Himself is the Cause of all actions.
ਆਪਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
Aapehi Paap Punn Bisathhaaraa ||
आपहि पाप पुंन बिसथारा ॥
He Himself distributes sins and noble acts.
ਇਆ ਜੁਗ ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਆਪਹਿ ਲਾਇਓ ॥
Eiaa Jug Jith Jith Aapehi Laaeiou ||
इआ जुग जितु जितु आपहि लाइओ ॥
In this age, people are attached as the Lord attaches them.
ਸੋ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਓ ਜੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਇਓ ॥
So So Paaeiou J Aap Dhivaaeiou ||
सो सो पाइओ जु आपि दिवाइओ ॥
They receive that which the Lord Himself gives.
ਉਆ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੋਊ ॥
Ouaa Kaa Anth N Jaanai Kooo ||
उआ का अंतु न जानै कोऊ ॥
No one knows His limits.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਊ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਊ ॥
Jo Jo Karai Sooo Fun Hooo ||
जो जो करै सोऊ फुनि होऊ ॥
Whatever He does, comes to pass.
ਏਕਹਿ ਤੇ ਸਗਲਾ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
Eaekehi Thae Sagalaa Bisathhaaraa ||
एकहि ते सगला बिसथारा ॥
From the One, the entire expanse of the Universe emanated.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੮॥

नानक आपि सवारनहारा ॥८॥
O Nanak, He Himself is our Saving Grace. ||8||

राचि रहे बनिता बिनोद कुसम रंग बिख सोर ॥
Man remains engrossed in women and playful pleasures; the tumult of his passion is like the dye of the safflower, which fades away all too soon.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰਉ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਮੈ ਮੋਰ ॥੧॥
Naanak Thih Saranee Paro Binas Jaae Mai Mor ||1||
नानक तिह सरनी परउ बिनसि जाइ मै मोर ॥१॥
O Nanak, seek God's Sanctuary, and your selfishness and conceit shall be taken away. ||1||
