अनिक जतन करि त्रिसन ना ध्रापै ॥
You try all sorts of things, but your thirst is still not satisfied.
ਭੇਖ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੁਝੈ ॥
Bhaekh Anaek Agan Nehee Bujhai ||
भेख अनेक अगनि नही बुझै ॥
Wearing various religious robes, the fire is not extinguished.
ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਹੀ ਸਿਝੈ ॥
Kott Oupaav Dharageh Nehee Sijhai ||
कोटि उपाव दरगह नही सिझै ॥
Even making millions of efforts, you shall not be accepted in the Court of the Lord.
ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
Shhoottas Naahee Oobh Paeiaal ||
छूटसि नाही ऊभ पइआलि ॥
You cannot escape to the heavens, or to the nether regions,
ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
Mohi Biaapehi Maaeiaa Jaal ||
मोहि बिआपहि माइआ जालि ॥
If you are entangled in emotional attachment and the net of Maya.
ਅਵਰ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਜਮੁ ਡਾਨੈ ॥
Avar Karathooth Sagalee Jam Ddaanai ||
अवर करतूति सगली जमु डानै ॥
All other efforts are punished by the Messenger of Death,
ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
Govindh Bhajan Bin Thil Nehee Maanai ||
गोविंद भजन बिनु तिलु नही मानै ॥
Which accepts nothing at all, except meditation on the Lord of the Universe.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Har Kaa Naam Japath Dhukh Jaae ||
हरि का नामु जपत दुखु जाइ ॥
Chanting the Name of the Lord, sorrow is dispelled.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੪॥
Naanak Bolai Sehaj Subhaae ||4||
नानक बोलै सहजि सुभाइ ॥४॥
O Nanak, chant it with intuitive ease. ||4||
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮਾਗੈ ॥
Chaar Padhaarathh Jae Ko Maagai ||
चारि पदारथ जे को मागै ॥
One who prays for the four cardinal blessings
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
Saadhh Janaa Kee Saevaa Laagai ||
साध जना की सेवा लागै ॥
Should commit himself to the service of the Saints.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਪੁਨਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
Jae Ko Aapunaa Dhookh Mittaavai ||
जे को आपुना दूखु मिटावै ॥
If you wish to erase your sorrows,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਦ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
Har Har Naam Ridhai Sadh Gaavai ||
हरि हरि नामु रिदै सद गावै ॥
Sing the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, within your heart.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਲੋਰੈ ॥
Jae Ko Apunee Sobhaa Lorai ||
जे को अपुनी सोभा लोरै ॥
If you long for honor for yourself,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੋਰੈ ॥
Saadhhasang Eih Houmai Shhorai ||
साधसंगि इह हउमै छोरै ॥
Then renounce your ego in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਤੇ ਡਰੈ ॥
Jae Ko Janam Maran Thae Ddarai ||
जे को जनम मरण ते डरै ॥
If you fear the cycle of birth and death,
ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰੈ ॥
Saadhh Janaa Kee Saranee Parai ||
साध जना की सरनी परै ॥
Then seek the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
Jis Jan Ko Prabh Dharas Piaasaa ||
जिसु जन कउ प्रभ दरस पिआसा ॥
Those who thirst for the Blessed Vision of God's Darshan
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
Naanak Thaa Kai Bal Bal Jaasaa ||5||
नानक ता कै बलि बलि जासा ॥५॥
- Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to them. ||5||
ਸਗਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਮਹਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੁ ॥
Sagal Purakh Mehi Purakh Pradhhaan ||
सगल पुरख महि पुरखु प्रधानु ॥
Among all persons, the supreme person is the one
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
Saadhhasang Jaa Kaa Mittai Abhimaan ||
साधसंगि जा का मिटै अभिमानु ॥
Who gives up his egotistical pride in the Company of the Holy.
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਨੀਚਾ ॥
Aapas Ko Jo Jaanai Neechaa ||
आपस कउ जो जाणै नीचा ॥
One who sees himself as lowly,
ਸੋਊ ਗਨੀਐ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥
Sooo Ganeeai Sabh Thae Oochaa ||
सोऊ गनीऐ सभ ते ऊचा ॥
Shall be accounted as the highest of all.
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਗਲ ਕੀ ਰੀਨਾ ॥
Jaa Kaa Man Hoe Sagal Kee Reenaa ||
जा का मनु होइ सगल की रीना ॥
One whose mind is the dust of all,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਚੀਨਾ ॥
Har Har Naam Thin Ghatt Ghatt Cheenaa ||
हरि हरि नामु तिनि घटि घटि चीना ॥
Recognizes the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in each and every heart.
ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਤੇ ਬੁਰਾ ਮਿਟਾਨਾ ॥
Man Apunae Thae Buraa Mittaanaa ||
मन अपुने ते बुरा मिटाना ॥
One who eradicates cruelty from within his own mind,
ਪੇਖੈ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ॥
Paekhai Sagal Srisatt Saajanaa ||
पेखै सगल स्रिसटि साजना ॥
Looks upon all the world as his friend.
ਸੂਖ ਦੂਖ ਜਨ ਸਮ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥
Sookh Dhookh Jan Sam Dhrisattaethaa ||
सूख दूख जन सम द्रिसटेता ॥
One who looks upon pleasure and pain as one and the same,
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਨਹੀ ਲੇਪਾ ॥੬॥
Naanak Paap Punn Nehee Laepaa ||6||
नानक पाप पुंन नही लेपा ॥६॥
O Nanak, is not affected by sin or virtue. ||6||
ਨਿਰਧਨ ਕਉ ਧਨੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
Niradhhan Ko Dhhan Thaero Naao ||
निरधन कउ धनु तेरो नाउ ॥
To the poor, Your Name is wealth.
ਨਿਥਾਵੇ ਕਉ ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਥਾਉ ॥
Nithhaavae Ko Naao Thaeraa Thhaao ||
निथावे कउ नाउ तेरा थाउ ॥
To the homeless, Your Name is home.
ਨਿਮਾਨੇ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
Nimaanae Ko Prabh Thaero Maan ||
निमाने कउ प्रभ तेरो मानु ॥
To the dishonored, You, O God, are honor.
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕਉ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
Sagal Ghattaa Ko Dhaevahu Dhaan ||
सगल घटा कउ देवहु दानु ॥
To all, You are the Giver of gifts.
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
Karan Karaavanehaar Suaamee ||
करन करावनहार सुआमी ॥
O Creator Lord, Cause of causes, O Lord and Master,
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
Sagal Ghattaa Kae Antharajaamee ||
सगल घटा के अंतरजामी ॥
Inner-knower, Searcher of all hearts:
ਅਪਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਆਪੇ ॥
Apanee Gath Mith Jaanahu Aapae ||
अपनी गति मिति जानहु आपे ॥
You alone know Your own condition and state.
ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
Aapan Sang Aap Prabh Raathae ||
आपन संगि आपि प्रभ राते ॥
You Yourself, God, are imbued with Yourself.
ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ॥
Thumharee Ousathath Thum Thae Hoe ||
तुम्हरी उसतति तुम ते होइ ॥
You alone can celebrate Your Praises.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੭॥
Naanak Avar N Jaanas Koe ||7||
नानक अवरु न जानसि कोइ ॥७॥
O Nanak, no one else knows. ||7||

सरब धरम महि स्रेसट धरमु ॥
Of all religions, the best religion
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਰਮੁ ॥
Har Ko Naam Jap Niramal Karam ||
हरि को नामु जपि निरमल करमु ॥
Is to chant the Name of the Lord and maintain pure conduct.
ਸਗਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਿਰਿਆ ॥
Sagal Kiraaa Mehi Ootham Kiriaa ||
सगल क्रिआ महि ऊतम किरिआ ॥
Of all religious rituals, the most sublime ritual
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਹਿਰਿਆ ॥
Saadhhasang Dhuramath Mal Hiriaa ||
साधसंगि दुरमति मलु हिरिआ ॥
Is to erase the filth of the dirty mind in the Company of the Holy.
ਸਗਲ ਉਦਮ ਮਹਿ ਉਦਮੁ ਭਲਾ ॥
Sagal Oudham Mehi Oudham Bhalaa ||
सगल उदम महि उदमु भला ॥
Of all efforts, the best effort
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜੀਅ ਸਦਾ ॥
Har Kaa Naam Japahu Jeea Sadhaa ||
हरि का नामु जपहु जीअ सदा ॥
Is to chant the Name of the Lord in the heart, forever.
ਸਗਲ ਬਾਨੀ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
Sagal Baanee Mehi Anmrith Baanee ||
सगल बानी महि अम्रित बानी ॥
Of all speech, the most ambrosial speech
ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਸਨ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥
Har Ko Jas Sun Rasan Bakhaanee ||
हरि को जसु सुनि रसन बखानी ॥
Is to hear the Lord's Praise and chant it with the tongue.
ਸਗਲ ਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਓਹੁ ਊਤਮ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
Sagal Thhaan Thae Ouhu Ootham Thhaan ||
सगल थान ते ओहु ऊतम थानु ॥
Of all places, the most sublime place,
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
Naanak Jih Ghatt Vasai Har Naam ||8||3||
नानक जिह घटि वसै हरि नामु ॥८॥३॥
O Nanak, is that heart in which the Name of the Lord abides. ||8||3||

What is your origin, and what is your appearance?
ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ਸੀਗਾਰਿਆ ॥
Jin Thoon Saaj Savaar Seegaariaa ||
जिनि तूं साजि सवारि सीगारिआ ॥
He who fashioned, adorned and decorated you
ਗਰਭ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਹਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਆ ॥
Garabh Agan Mehi Jinehi Oubaariaa ||
गरभ अगनि महि जिनहि उबारिआ ॥
In the fire of the womb, He preserved you.
ਬਾਰ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੈ ਦੂਧ ॥
Baar Bivasathhaa Thujhehi Piaarai Dhoodhh ||
बार बिवसथा तुझहि पिआरै दूध ॥
In your infancy, He gave you milk to drink.
ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਸੁਖ ਸੂਧ ॥
Bhar Joban Bhojan Sukh Soodhh ||
भरि जोबन भोजन सुख सूध ॥
In the flower of your youth, He gave you food, pleasure and understanding.
ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਊਪਰਿ ਸਾਕ ਸੈਨ ॥
