कोऊ नरक कोऊ सुरग बंछावत ॥
Some have gone to hell, and some yearn for paradise.
ਆਲ ਜਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥
Aal Jaal Maaeiaa Janjaal ||
आल जाल माइआ जंजाल ॥
Worldly snares and entanglements of Maya,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੋਹ ਭਰਮ ਭੈ ਭਾਰ ॥
Houmai Moh Bharam Bhai Bhaar ||
हउमै मोह भरम भै भार ॥
Egotism, attachment, doubt and loads of fear;
ਦੂਖ ਸੂਖ ਮਾਨ ਅਪਮਾਨ ॥
Dhookh Sookh Maan Apamaan ||
दूख सूख मान अपमान ॥
Pain and pleasure, honor and dishonor
ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕੀਓ ਬਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨ ॥
Anik Prakaar Keeou Bakhyaan ||
अनिक प्रकार कीओ बख्यान ॥
These came to be described in various ways.
ਆਪਨ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ॥
Aapan Khael Aap Kar Dhaekhai ||
आपन खेलु आपि करि देखै ॥
He Himself creates and beholds His own drama.
ਖੇਲੁ ਸੰਕੋਚੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੈ ॥੭॥
Khael Sankochai Tho Naanak Eaekai ||7||
खेलु संकोचै तउ नानक एकै ॥७॥
He winds up the drama, and then, O Nanak, He alone remains. ||7||
ਜਹ ਅਬਿਗਤੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਤਹ ਆਪਿ ॥
Jeh Abigath Bhagath Theh Aap ||
जह अबिगतु भगतु तह आपि ॥
Wherever the Eternal Lord's devotee is, He Himself is there.
ਜਹ ਪਸਰੈ ਪਾਸਾਰੁ ਸੰਤ ਪਰਤਾਪਿ ॥
Jeh Pasarai Paasaar Santh Parathaap ||
जह पसरै पासारु संत परतापि ॥
He unfolds the expanse of His creation for the glory of His Saint.
ਦੁਹੂ ਪਾਖ ਕਾ ਆਪਹਿ ਧਨੀ ॥
Dhuhoo Paakh Kaa Aapehi Dhhanee ||
दुहू पाख का आपहि धनी ॥
He Himself is the Master of both worlds.
ਉਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਉਨਹੂ ਬਨੀ ॥
Oun Kee Sobhaa Ounehoo Banee ||
उन की सोभा उनहू बनी ॥
His Praise is to Himself alone.
ਆਪਹਿ ਕਉਤਕ ਕਰੈ ਅਨਦ ਚੋਜ ॥
Aapehi Kouthak Karai Anadh Choj ||
आपहि कउतक करै अनद चोज ॥
He Himself performs and plays His amusements and games.
ਆਪਹਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਨ ਨਿਰਜੋਗ ॥
Aapehi Ras Bhogan Nirajog ||
आपहि रस भोगन निरजोग ॥
He Himself enjoys pleasures, and yet He is unaffected and untouched.
ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
Jis Bhaavai This Aapan Naae Laavai ||
जिसु भावै तिसु आपन नाइ लावै ॥
He attaches whomever He pleases to His Name.
ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਖੇਲ ਖਿਲਾਵੈ ॥
Jis Bhaavai This Khael Khilaavai ||
जिसु भावै तिसु खेल खिलावै ॥
He causes whomever He pleases to play in His play.
ਬੇਸੁਮਾਰ ਅਥਾਹ ਅਗਨਤ ਅਤੋਲੈ ॥
Baesumaar Athhaah Aganath Atholai ||
बेसुमार अथाह अगनत अतोलै ॥
He is beyond calculation, beyond measure, uncountable and unfathomable.
ਜਿਉ ਬੁਲਾਵਹੁ ਤਿਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਬੋਲੈ ॥੮॥੨੧॥

जीअ जंत के ठाकुरा आपे वरतणहार ॥
O Lord and Master of all beings and creatures, You Yourself are prevailing everywhere.

He Himself is the speaker, and He Himself is the listener.
ਆਪਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਆਪਿ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥
Aapehi Eaek Aap Bisathhaar ||
आपहि एकु आपि बिसथारु ॥
He Himself is the One, and He Himself is the many.
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
Jaa This Bhaavai Thaa Srisatt Oupaaeae ||
जा तिसु भावै ता स्रिसटि उपाए ॥
When it pleases Him, He creates the world.
ਆਪਨੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਲਏ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
Aapanai Bhaanai Leae Samaaeae ||
आपनै भाणै लए समाए ॥
As He pleases, He absorbs it back into Himself.
ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Thum Thae Bhinn Nehee Kishh Hoe ||
तुम ते भिंन नही किछु होइ ॥
Without You, nothing can be done.
ਆਪਨ ਸੂਤਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਪਰੋਇ ॥
Aapan Sooth Sabh Jagath Paroe ||
आपन सूति सभु जगतु परोइ ॥
Upon Your thread, You have strung the whole world.
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
Jaa Ko Prabh Jeeo Aap Bujhaaeae ||
जा कउ प्रभ जीउ आपि बुझाए ॥
One whom God Himself inspires to understand
ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
Sach Naam Soee Jan Paaeae ||
सचु नामु सोई जनु पाए ॥
- that person obtains the True Name.
ਸੋ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਤਤ ਕਾ ਬੇਤਾ ॥
So Samadharasee Thath Kaa Baethaa ||
सो समदरसी तत का बेता ॥
He looks impartially upon all, and he knows the essential reality.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਾ ਜੇਤਾ ॥੧॥

नानक सगल स्रिसटि का जेता ॥१॥
O Nanak, he conquers the whole world. ||1||
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਸਭ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਹਾਥ ॥
Jeea Janthr Sabh Thaa Kai Haathh ||
जीअ जंत्र सभ ता कै हाथ ॥
All beings and creatures are in His Hands.
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੋ ਨਾਥੁ ॥
Dheen Dhaeiaal Anaathh Ko Naathh ||
दीन दइआल अनाथ को नाथु ॥
He is Merciful to the meek, the Patron of the patronless.
ਜਿਸੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
Jis Raakhai This Koe N Maarai ||
जिसु राखै तिसु कोइ न मारै ॥
No one can kill those who are protected by Him.
ਸੋ ਮੂਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੈ ॥
So Mooaa Jis Manahu Bisaarai ||
सो मूआ जिसु मनहु बिसारै ॥
One who is forgotten by God, is already dead.
ਤਿਸੁ ਤਜਿ ਅਵਰ ਕਹਾ ਕੋ ਜਾਇ ॥
This Thaj Avar Kehaa Ko Jaae ||
तिसु तजि अवर कहा को जाइ ॥
Leaving Him, where else could anyone go?
ਸਭ ਸਿਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਰਾਇ ॥
Sabh Sir Eaek Niranjan Raae ||
सभ सिरि एकु निरंजन राइ ॥
Over the heads of all is the One, the Immaculate King.
ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਭ ਹਾਥਿ ॥

जीअ की जुगति जा कै सभ हाथि ॥
The ways and means of all beings are in His Hands.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਸਾਥਿ ॥
Anthar Baahar Jaanahu Saathh ||
अंतरि बाहरि जानहु साथि ॥
Inwardly and outwardly, know that He is with you.
ਗੁਨ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
Gun Nidhhaan Baeanth Apaar ||
गुन निधान बेअंत अपार ॥
He is the Ocean of excellence, infinite and endless.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ॥੨॥
Naanak Dhaas Sadhaa Balihaar ||2||
नानक दास सदा बलिहार ॥२॥
Slave Nanak is forever a sacrifice to Him. ||2||

The Perfect, Merciful Lord is pervading everywhere.

सभ ऊपरि होवत किरपाल ॥
His kindness extends to all.
ਅਪਨੇ ਕਰਤਬ ਜਾਨੈ ਆਪਿ ॥
Apanae Karathab Jaanai Aap ||
अपने करतब जानै आपि ॥
He Himself knows His own ways.
ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਆਪਿ ॥
Antharajaamee Rehiou Biaap ||
अंतरजामी रहिओ बिआपि ॥
The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, is present everywhere.
ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲੈ ਜੀਅਨ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ॥
Prathipaalai Jeean Bahu Bhaath ||
प्रतिपालै जीअन बहु भाति ॥
He cherishes His living beings in so many ways.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਰਚਿਓ ਸੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਧਿਆਤਿ ॥
Jo Jo Rachiou S Thisehi Dhhiaath ||
जो जो रचिओ सु तिसहि धिआति ॥
That which He has created meditates on Him.
ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
Jis Bhaavai This Leae Milaae ||
जिसु भावै तिसु लए मिलाइ ॥
Whoever pleases Him, He blends into Himself.
ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥
Bhagath Karehi Har Kae Gun Gaae ||
भगति करहि हरि के गुण गाइ ॥
They perform His devotional service and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
Man Anthar Bisvaas Kar Maaniaa ||
मन अंतरि बिस्वासु करि मानिआ ॥
With heart-felt faith, they believe in Him.
ਕਰਨਹਾਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਕੁ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥੩॥
Karanehaar Naanak Eik Jaaniaa ||3||
करनहारु नानक इकु जानिआ ॥३॥
O Nanak, they realize the One, the Creator Lord. ||3||
ਜਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੈ ਨਾਇ ॥
Jan Laagaa Har Eaekai Naae ||
जनु लागा हरि एकै नाइ ॥
The Lord's humble servant is committed to His Name.
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਨ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
This Kee Aas N Birathhee Jaae ||
तिस की आस न बिरथी जाइ ॥
His hopes do not go in vain.
ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥
Saevak Ko Saevaa Ban Aaee ||
सेवक कउ सेवा बनि आई ॥
The servant's purpose is to serve;
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
Hukam Boojh Param Padh Paaee ||
हुकमु बूझि परम पदु पाई ॥
Obeying the Lord's Command, the supreme status is obtained.
ਇਸ ਤੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Eis Thae Oopar Nehee Beechaar ||
इस ते ऊपरि नही बीचारु ॥
Beyond this, he has no other thought.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਸਿਆ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
Jaa Kai Man Basiaa Nirankaar ||
जा कै मनि बसिआ निरंकारु ॥
Within his mind, the Formless Lord abides.
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋਰਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ॥
Bandhhan Thor Bheae Niravair ||
बंधन तोरि भए निरवैर ॥
His bonds are cut away, and he becomes free of hatred.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਪੈਰ ॥
Anadhin Poojehi Gur Kae Pair ||
अनदिनु पूजहि गुर के पैर ॥
Night and day, he worships the Feet of the Guru.
ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥
Eih Lok Sukheeeae Paralok Suhaelae ||
इह लोक सुखीए परलोक सुहेले ॥
He is at peace in this world, and happy in the next.
