ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

जितु को लाइआ तित ही लागा ॥
As the Lord attaches someone, so is he attached.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਗਾ ॥੮॥੬॥
So Saevak Naanak Jis Bhaagaa ||8||6||
सो सेवकु नानक जिसु भागा ॥८॥६॥
He alone is the Lord's servant, O Nanak, who is so blessed. ||8||6||

बिनु सिमरन जैसे सरप आरजारी ॥
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one's life is like that of a snake.
ਤਿਉ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
Thio Jeevehi Saakath Naam Bisaaree ||1||
तिउ जीवहि साकत नामु बिसारी ॥१॥
This is how the faithless cynic lives, forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||
ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਆ ॥
Eaek Nimakh Jo Simaran Mehi Jeeaa ||
एक निमख जो सिमरन महि जीआ ॥
One who lives in meditative remembrance, even for an instant,
ਕੋਟਿ ਦਿਨਸ ਲਾਖ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Kott Dhinas Laakh Sadhaa Thhir Thheeaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
कोटि दिनस लाख सदा थिरु थीआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Lives for hundreds of thousands and millions of days, and becomes stable forever. ||1||Pause||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਸ ॥
Bin Simaran Dhhrig Karam Karaas ||
बिनु सिमरन ध्रिगु करम करास ॥
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one's actions and works are cursed.
ਕਾਗ ਬਤਨ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਹਿ ਵਾਸ ॥੨॥
Kaag Bathan Bisattaa Mehi Vaas ||2||
काग बतन बिसटा महि वास ॥२॥
Like the crow's beak, he dwells in manure. ||2||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਭਏ ਕੂਕਰ ਕਾਮ ॥
Bin Simaran Bheae Kookar Kaam ||
बिनु सिमरन भए कूकर काम ॥
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one acts like a dog.
ਸਾਕਤ ਬੇਸੁਆ ਪੂਤ ਨਿਨਾਮ ॥੩॥
Saakath Baesuaa Pooth Ninaam ||3||
साकत बेसुआ पूत निनाम ॥३॥
The faithless cynic is nameless, like the prostitute's son. ||3||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਜੈਸੇ ਸੀਙ ਛਤਾਰਾ ॥
Bin Simaran Jaisae Seen(g) Shhathaaraa ||
बिनु सिमरन जैसे सीङ छतारा ॥
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one is like a horned ram.
ਬੋਲਹਿ ਕੂਰੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਮੁਖੁ ਕਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
Bolehi Koor Saakath Mukh Kaaraa ||4||
बोलहि कूरु साकत मुखु कारा ॥४॥
The faithless cynic barks out his lies, and his face is blackened. ||4||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਗਰਧਭ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ॥
Bin Simaran Garadhhabh Kee Niaaee ||
बिनु सिमरन गरधभ की निआई ॥
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one is like a donkey.
ਸਾਕਤ ਥਾਨ ਭਰਿਸਟ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥੫॥
Saakath Thhaan Bharisatt Firaahee ||5||
साकत थान भरिसट फिराही ॥५॥
The faithless cynic wanders around in polluted places. ||5||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੂਕਰ ਹਰਕਾਇਆ ॥
Bin Simaran Kookar Harakaaeiaa ||
बिनु सिमरन कूकर हरकाइआ ॥
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one is like a mad dog.
ਸਾਕਤ ਲੋਭੀ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
Saakath Lobhee Bandhh N Paaeiaa ||6||
साकत लोभी बंधु न पाइआ ॥६॥
The greedy, faithless cynic falls into entanglements. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਘਾਤੀ ॥
Bin Simaran Hai Aatham Ghaathee ||
बिनु सिमरन है आतम घाती ॥
Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, he murders his own soul.
ਸਾਕਤ ਨੀਚ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੁਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤੀ ॥੭॥
Saakath Neech This Kul Nehee Jaathee ||7||
साकत नीच तिसु कुलु नही जाती ॥७॥
The faithless cynic is wretched, without family or social standing. ||7||
ਜਿਸੁ ਭਇਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
Jis Bhaeiaa Kirapaal This Sathasang Milaaeiaa ||
जिसु भइआ क्रिपालु तिसु सतसंगि मिलाइआ ॥
When the Lord becomes merciful, one joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੭॥

कहु नानक गुरि जगतु तराइआ ॥८॥७॥
Says Nanak, the Guru has saved the world. ||8||7||

Through the Guru's Word, I have attained the supreme status.

गुरि पूरै मेरी पैज रखाई ॥१॥
The Perfect Guru has preserved my honor. ||1||

गुर कै बचनि धिआइओ मोहि नाउ ॥
Through the Guru's Word, I meditate on the Name.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुर परसादि मोहि मिलिआ थाउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
By Guru's Grace, I have obtained a place of rest. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਰਸਨ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
Gur Kai Bachan Sun Rasan Vakhaanee ||
गुर कै बचनि सुणि रसन वखाणी ॥
I listen to the Guru's Word, and chant it with my tongue.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
Gur Kirapaa Thae Anmrith Maeree Baanee ||2||
गुर किरपा ते अम्रित मेरी बाणी ॥२॥
By Guru's Grace, my speech is like nectar. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪੁ ॥
Gur Kai Bachan Mittiaa Maeraa Aap ||
गुर कै बचनि मिटिआ मेरा आपु ॥
Through the Guru's Word, my selfishness and conceit have been removed.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਇਆ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਡ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥੩॥
Gur Kee Dhaeiaa Thae Maeraa Vadd Parathaap ||3||
गुर की दइआ ते मेरा वड परतापु ॥३॥
Through the Guru's kindness, I have obtained glorious greatness. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਭਰਮੁ ॥
Gur Kai Bachan Mittiaa Maeraa Bharam ||
गुर कै बचनि मिटिआ मेरा भरमु ॥
Through the Guru's Word, my doubts have been removed.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥੪॥

गुर कै बचनि पेखिओ सभु ब्रहमु ॥४॥
Through the Guru's Word, I see God everywhere. ||4||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ॥

गुर कै बचनि कीनो राजु जोगु ॥
Through the Guru's Word, I practice Raja Yoga, the Yoga of meditation and success.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਲੋਗੁ ॥੫॥
Gur Kai Sang Thariaa Sabh Log ||5||
गुर कै संगि तरिआ सभु लोगु ॥५॥
In the Company of the Guru, all the people of the world are saved. ||5||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਿਧਿ ॥
Gur Kai Bachan Maerae Kaaraj Sidhh ||
गुर कै बचनि मेरे कारज सिधि ॥
Through the Guru's Word, my affairs are resolved.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਉ ਨਿਧਿ ॥੬॥
Gur Kai Bachan Paaeiaa Naao Nidhh ||6||
गुर कै बचनि पाइआ नाउ निधि ॥६॥
Through the Guru's Word, I have obtained the nine treasures. ||6||
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ॥
Jin Jin Keenee Maerae Gur Kee Aasaa ||
जिनि जिनि कीनी मेरे गुर की आसा ॥
Whoever places his hopes in my Guru,
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਕਟੀਐ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸਾ ॥੭॥
This Kee Katteeai Jam Kee Faasaa ||7||
तिस की कटीऐ जम की फासा ॥७॥
Has the noose of death cut away. ||7||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਮੁ ॥
Gur Kai Bachan Jaagiaa Maeraa Karam ||
गुर कै बचनि जागिआ मेरा करमु ॥
Through the Guru's Word, my good karma has been awakened.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥੮॥੮॥

नानक गुरु भेटिआ पारब्रहमु ॥८॥८॥
O Nanak, meeting with the Guru, I have found the Supreme Lord God. ||8||8||

गुरु मेरे प्राण सतिगुरु मेरी रासि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The Guru is my breath of life, the True Guru is my wealth. ||1||Pause||

गुर का दरसनु देखि देखि जीवा ॥
Beholding the Blessed Vision of the Guru's Darshan, I live.
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਧੋਇ ਧੋਇ ਪੀਵਾ ॥੧॥
Gur Kae Charan Dhhoe Dhhoe Peevaa ||1||
गुर के चरण धोइ धोइ पीवा ॥१॥
I wash the Guru's Feet, and drink in this water. ||1||
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਨਿਤ ਮਜਨੁ ਕਰਉ ॥
Gur Kee Raen Nith Majan Karo ||
गुर की रेणु नित मजनु करउ ॥
I take my daily bath in the dust of the Guru's Feet.
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਹਰਉ ॥੨॥
Janam Janam Kee Houmai Mal Haro ||2||
जनम जनम की हउमै मलु हरउ ॥२॥
The egotistical filth of countless incarnations is washed off. ||2||
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਝੂਲਾਵਉ ਪਾਖਾ ॥
This Gur Ko Jhoolaavo Paakhaa ||
तिसु गुर कउ झूलावउ पाखा ॥
I wave the fan over the Guru.
ਮਹਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤੇ ਹਾਥੁ ਦੇ ਰਾਖਾ ॥੩॥
Mehaa Agan Thae Haathh Dhae Raakhaa ||3||
महा अगनि ते हाथु दे राखा ॥३॥
Giving me His Hand, He has saved me from the great fire. ||3||
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਢੋਵਉ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
This Gur Kai Grihi Dtovo Paanee ||
तिसु गुर कै ग्रिहि ढोवउ पाणी ॥
I carry water for the Guru's household;
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਅਕਲ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੪॥
Jis Gur Thae Akal Gath Jaanee ||4||
जिसु गुर ते अकल गति जाणी ॥४॥
From the Guru, I have learned the Way of the One Lord. ||4||
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਪੀਸਉ ਨੀਤ ॥
This Gur Kai Grihi Peeso Neeth ||
तिसु गुर कै ग्रिहि पीसउ नीत ॥
I grind the corn for the Guru's household.
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵੈਰੀ ਸਭ ਮੀਤ ॥੫॥
Jis Parasaadh Vairee Sabh Meeth ||5||
जिसु परसादि वैरी सभ मीत ॥५॥
By His Grace, all my enemies have become friends. ||5||
