सूही महला १ ॥
Soohee, First Mehl:
ਭਾਂਡਾ ਹਛਾ ਸੋਇ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥
Bhaanddaa Hashhaa Soe Jo This Bhaavasee ||
भांडा हछा सोइ जो तिसु भावसी ॥
That vessel alone is pure, which is pleasing to Him.
ਭਾਂਡਾ ਅਤਿ ਮਲੀਣੁ ਧੋਤਾ ਹਛਾ ਨ ਹੋਇਸੀ ॥
Bhaanddaa Ath Maleen Dhhothaa Hashhaa N Hoeisee ||
भांडा अति मलीणु धोता हछा न होइसी ॥
The filthiest vessel does not become pure, simply by being washed.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹੋਇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
Guroo Dhuaarai Hoe Sojhee Paaeisee ||
गुरू दुआरै होइ सोझी पाइसी ॥
Through the Gurdwara the Guru's Gate one obtains understanding.
ਏਤੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਧੋਇ ਹਛਾ ਹੋਇਸੀ ॥
Eaeth Dhuaarai Dhhoe Hashhaa Hoeisee ||
एतु दुआरै धोइ हछा होइसी ॥
By being washed through this Gate, it becomes pure.
ਮੈਲੇ ਹਛੇ ਕਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਸੀ ॥
Mailae Hashhae Kaa Veechaar Aap Varathaaeisee ||
मैले हछे का वीचारु आपि वरताइसी ॥
The Lord Himself sets the standards to differentiate between the dirty and the pure.
ਮਤੁ ਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਇ ਅਗੈ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
Math Ko Jaanai Jaae Agai Paaeisee ||
मतु को जाणै जाइ अगै पाइसी ॥
Do not think that you will automatically find a place of rest hereafter.
ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ਤੇਹਾ ਹੋਇਸੀ ॥
Jaehae Karam Kamaae Thaehaa Hoeisee ||
जेहे करम कमाइ तेहा होइसी ॥
According to the actions one has committed, so does the mortal become.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਸੀ ॥
Anmrith Har Kaa Naao Aap Varathaaeisee ||
अम्रितु हरि का नाउ आपि वरताइसी ॥
He Himself bestows the Ambrosial Name of the Lord.
ਚਲਿਆ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਵਾਰਿ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਾਇਸੀ ॥
Chaliaa Path Sio Janam Savaar Vaajaa Vaaeisee ||
चलिआ पति सिउ जनमु सवारि वाजा वाइसी ॥
Such a mortal departs with honor and renown; his life is embellished and redeemed, and the trumpets resound with his glory.
ਮਾਣਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਇਸੀ ॥
Maanas Kiaa Vaechaaraa Thihu Lok Sunaaeisee ||
माणसु किआ वेचारा तिहु लोक सुणाइसी ॥
Why speak of poor mortals? His glory shall echo throughout the three worlds.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਸਭਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰਸੀ ॥੧॥੪॥੬॥
Naanak Aap Nihaal Sabh Kul Thaarasee ||1||4||6||
नानक आपि निहाल सभि कुल तारसी ॥१॥४॥६॥
O Nanak, he himself shall be enraptured, and he shall save his entire ancestry. ||1||4||6||

Soohee, First Mehl:
ਜੋਗੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਗਵੈ ਭੋਗੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
Jogee Hovai Jogavai Bhogee Hovai Khaae ||
जोगी होवै जोगवै भोगी होवै खाइ ॥
The Yogi practices yoga, and the pleasure-seeker practices eating.
ਤਪੀਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਪੁ ਕਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥
Thapeeaa Hovai Thap Karae Theerathh Mal Mal Naae ||1||
तपीआ होवै तपु करे तीरथि मलि मलि नाइ ॥१॥
The austere practice austerities, bathing and rubbing themselves at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||
ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦੜਾ ਸੁਣੀਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬਹੈ ਅਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Thaeraa Sadharraa Suneejai Bhaaee Jae Ko Behai Alaae ||1|| Rehaao ||
तेरा सदड़ा सुणीजै भाई जे को बहै अलाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Let me hear some news of You, O Beloved; if only someone would come and sit with me, and tell me. ||1||Pause||
ਜੈਸਾ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਲੁਣੇ ਜੋ ਖਟੇ ਸ ਖਾਇ ॥
Jaisaa Beejai So Lunae Jo Khattae Suo Khaae ||
जैसा बीजै सो लुणे जो खटे सो खाइ ॥
As one plants, so does he harvest; whatever he earns, he eats.
ਅਗੈ ਪੁਛ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸਣੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
Agai Pushh N Hovee Jae San Neesaanai Jaae ||2||
अगै पुछ न होवई जे सणु नीसाणै जाइ ॥२॥
In the world hereafter, his account is not called for, if he goes with the insignia of the Lord. ||2||
ਤੈਸੋ ਜੈਸਾ ਕਾਢੀਐ ਜੈਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
Thaiso Jaisaa Kaadteeai Jaisee Kaar Kamaae ||
तैसो जैसा काढीऐ जैसी कार कमाइ ॥
According to the actions the mortal commits, so is he proclaimed.
ਜੋ ਦਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਸੋ ਦਮੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
Jo Dham Chith N Aavee So Dham Birathhaa Jaae ||3||
जो दमु चिति न आवई सो दमु बिरथा जाइ ॥३॥
And that breath which is drawn without thinking of the Lord, that breath goes in vain. ||3||
ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਵੇਚੀ ਬੈ ਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਲਏ ਵਿਕਾਇ ॥
Eihu Than Vaechee Bai Karee Jae Ko Leae Vikaae ||
इहु तनु वेची बै करी जे को लए विकाइ ॥
I would sell this body, if someone would only purchase it.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥੫॥੭॥
Naanak Kanm N Aavee Jith Than Naahee Sachaa Naao ||4||5||7||
नानक कमि न आवई जितु तनि नाही सचा नाउ ॥४॥५॥७॥
O Nanak, that body is of no use at all, if it does not enshrine the Name of the True Lord. ||4||5||7||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਖਿੰਥਾ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਡੰਡੈ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਭਸਮ ਚੜਾਈਐ ॥
Jog N Khinthhaa Jog N Ddanddai Jog N Bhasam Charraaeeai ||
जोगु न खिंथा जोगु न डंडै जोगु न भसम चड़ाईऐ ॥
Yoga is not the patched coat, Yoga is not the walking stick. Yoga is not smearing the body with ashes.
ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਮੁੰਦੀ ਮੂੰਡਿ ਮੁਡਾਇਐ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਵਾਈਐ ॥
Jog N Mundhee Moondd Muddaaeiai Jog N Sinn(g)ee Vaaeeai ||
जोगु न मुंदी मूंडि मुडाइऐ जोगु न सिंङी वाईऐ ॥
Yoga is not the ear-rings, and not the shaven head. Yoga is not the blowing of the horn.
ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥
Anjan Maahi Niranjan Reheeai Jog Jugath Eiv Paaeeai ||1||
अंजन माहि निरंजनि रहीऐ जोग जुगति इव पाईऐ ॥१॥
Remaining unblemished in the midst of the filth of the world - this is the way to attain Yoga. ||1||
ਗਲੀ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
Galee Jog N Hoee ||
गली जोगु न होई ॥
By mere words, Yoga is not attained.
ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Eaek Dhrisatt Kar Samasar Jaanai Jogee Keheeai Soee ||1|| Rehaao ||
एक द्रिसटि करि समसरि जाणै जोगी कहीऐ सोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
One who looks upon all with a single eye, and knows them to be one and the same - he alone is known as a Yogi. ||1||Pause||
ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
Jog N Baahar Marree Masaanee Jog N Thaarree Laaeeai ||
जोगु न बाहरि मड़ी मसाणी जोगु न ताड़ी लाईऐ ॥
Yoga is not wandering to the tombs of the dead; Yoga is not sitting in trances.
ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਦੇਸਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਭਵਿਐ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਈਐ ॥
Jog N Dhaes Dhisanthar Bhaviai Jog N Theerathh Naaeeai ||
जोगु न देसि दिसंतरि भविऐ जोगु न तीरथि नाईऐ ॥
Yoga is not wandering through foreign lands; Yoga is not bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥

Sathigur Bhaettai Thaa Sehasaa Thoottai Dhhaavath Varaj Rehaaeeai ||
सतिगुरु भेटै ता सहसा तूटै धावतु वरजि रहाईऐ ॥
Meeting with the True Guru, doubt is dispelled, and the wandering mind is restrained.
ਨਿਝਰੁ ਝਰੈ ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਪਰਚਾ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Nijhar Jharai Sehaj Dhhun Laagai Ghar Hee Parachaa Paaeeai ||
निझरु झरै सहज धुनि लागै घर ही परचा पाईऐ ॥
Nectar rains down, celestial music resounds, and deep within, wisdom is obtained.
ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੩॥

Naanak Jeevathiaa Mar Reheeai Aisaa Jog Kamaaeeai ||
नानक जीवतिआ मरि रहीऐ ऐसा जोगु कमाईऐ ॥
O Nanak, remain dead while yet alive - practice such a Yoga.
ਵਾਜੇ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਵਾਜੈ ਤਉ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Vaajae Baajhahu Sinn(g)ee Vaajai Tho Nirabho Padh Paaeeai ||
वाजे बाझहु सिंङी वाजै तउ निरभउ पदु पाईऐ ॥
When the horn is blown without being blown, then you shall attain the state of fearless dignity.

Koun Tharaajee Kavan Thulaa Thaeraa Kavan Saraaf Bulaavaa ||
कउण तराजी कवणु तुला तेरा कवणु सराफु बुलावा ॥
What scale, what weights, and what assayer shall I call for You, Lord?
ਕਉਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੇਵਾ ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਮੁਲੁ ਕਰਾਵਾ ॥੧॥
Koun Guroo Kai Pehi Dheekhiaa Laevaa Kai Pehi Mul Karaavaa ||1||
कउणु गुरू कै पहि दीखिआ लेवा कै पहि मुलु करावा ॥१॥
From what guru should I receive instruction? By whom should I have Your value appraised? ||1||
