Bilaaval, First Mehl:
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਮਨਸਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
Man Kaa Kehiaa Manasaa Karai ||
मन का कहिआ मनसा करै ॥
The human acts according to the wishes of the mind.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਉਚਰੈ ॥
Eihu Man Punn Paap Oucharai ||
इहु मनु पुंनु पापु उचरै ॥
This mind feeds on virtue and vice.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
Maaeiaa Madh Maathae Thripath N Aavai ||
माइआ मदि माते त्रिपति न आवै ॥
Intoxicated with the wine of Maya, satisfaction never comes.
ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
Thripath Mukath Man Saachaa Bhaavai ||1||
त्रिपति मुकति मनि साचा भावै ॥१॥
Satisfaction and liberation come, only to one whose mind is pleasing to the True Lord. ||1||
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਖੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
Than Dhhan Kalath Sabh Dhaekh Abhimaanaa ||
तनु धनु कलतु सभु देखु अभिमाना ॥
Gazing upon his body, wealth, wife and all his possessions, he is proud.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bin Naavai Kishh Sang N Jaanaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
बिनु नावै किछु संगि न जाना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
But without the Name of the Lord, nothing shall go along with him. ||1||Pause||
ਕੀਚਹਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥
Keechehi Ras Bhog Khuseeaa Man Kaeree ||
कीचहि रस भोग खुसीआ मन केरी ॥
He enjoys tastes, pleasures and joys in his mind.
ਧਨੁ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤਨੁ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥
Dhhan Lokaan Than Bhasamai Dtaeree ||
धनु लोकां तनु भसमै ढेरी ॥
But his wealth will pass on to other people, and his body will be reduced to ashes.
ਖਾਕੂ ਖਾਕੁ ਰਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਫੈਲੁ ॥
Khaakoo Khaak Ralai Sabh Fail ||
खाकू खाकु रलै सभु फैलु ॥
The entire expanse, like dust, shall mix with dust.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਮੈਲੁ ॥੨॥
Bin Sabadhai Nehee Outharai Mail ||2||
बिनु सबदै नही उतरै मैलु ॥२॥
Without the Word of the Shabad, his filth is not removed. ||2||
ਗੀਤ ਰਾਗ ਘਨ ਤਾਲ ਸਿ ਕੂਰੇ ॥
Geeth Raag Ghan Thaal S Koorae ||
गीत राग घन ताल सि कूरे ॥
The various songs, tunes and rhythms are false.
ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
Thrihu Gun Oupajai Binasai Dhoorae ||
त्रिहु गुण उपजै बिनसै दूरे ॥
Trapped by the three qualities, people come and go, far from the Lord.
ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Dhoojee Dhuramath Dharadh N Jaae ||
दूजी दुरमति दरदु न जाइ ॥
In duality, the pain of their evil-mindedness does not leave them.
ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਾਰੂ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੩॥
Shhoottai Guramukh Dhaaroo Gun Gaae ||3||
छूटै गुरमुखि दारू गुण गाइ ॥३॥
But the Gurmukh is emancipated by taking the medicine, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||
ਧੋਤੀ ਊਜਲ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ॥
Dhhothee Oojal Thilak Gal Maalaa ||
धोती ऊजल तिलकु गलि माला ॥
He may wear a clean loin-cloth, apply the ceremonial mark to his forehead, and wear a mala around his neck;
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਨਾਟ ਸਾਲਾ ॥
Anthar Krodhh Parrehi Naatt Saalaa ||
अंतरि क्रोधु पड़हि नाट साला ॥
But if there is anger within him, he is merely reading his part, like an actor in a play.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦੁ ਪੀਆ ॥
Naam Visaar Maaeiaa Madh Peeaa ||
नामु विसारि माइआ मदु पीआ ॥
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he drinks in the wine of Maya.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੪॥
Bin Gur Bhagath Naahee Sukh Thheeaa ||4||
बिनु गुर भगति नाही सुखु थीआ ॥४॥
Without devotional worship to the Guru, there is no peace. ||4||
ਸੂਕਰ ਸੁਆਨ ਗਰਧਭ ਮੰਜਾਰਾ ॥
Sookar Suaan Garadhhabh Manjaaraa ||
सूकर सुआन गरधभ मंजारा ॥
The human is a pig, a dog, a donkey, a cat,
ਪਸੂ ਮਲੇਛ ਨੀਚ ਚੰਡਾਲਾ ॥
Pasoo Malaeshh Neech Chanddaalaa ||
पसू मलेछ नीच चंडाला ॥
A beast, a filthy, lowly wretch, an outcast,
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਹੁ ਫੇਰੇ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਐ ॥
Gur Thae Muhu Faerae Thinh Jon Bhavaaeeai ||
गुर ते मुहु फेरे तिन्ह जोनि भवाईऐ ॥
If he turns his face away from the Guru. He shall wander in reincarnation.
ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੫॥
Bandhhan Baadhhiaa Aaeeai Jaaeeai ||5||
बंधनि बाधिआ आईऐ जाईऐ ॥५॥
Bound in bondage, he comes and goes. ||5||
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਲਹੈ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ॥
Gur Saevaa Thae Lehai Padhaarathh ||
गुर सेवा ते लहै पदारथु ॥
Serving the Guru, the treasure is found.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥੁ ॥
Hiradhai Naam Sadhaa Kirathaarathh ||
हिरदै नामु सदा किरतारथु ॥
With the Naam in the heart, one always prospers.
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
Saachee Dharageh Pooshh N Hoe ||
साची दरगह पूछ न होइ ॥
And in the Court of the True Lord, you shall not called to account.
ਮਾਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੀਝੈ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੬॥
Maanae Hukam Seejhai Dhar Soe ||6||
माने हुकमु सीझै दरि सोइ ॥६॥
One who obeys the Hukam of the Lord's Command, is approved at the Lord's Door. ||6||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
Sathigur Milai Th This Ko Jaanai ||
सतिगुरु मिलै त तिस कउ जाणै ॥
Meeting the True Guru, one knows the Lord.
ਰਹੈ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
Rehai Rajaaee Hukam Pashhaanai ||
रहै रजाई हुकमु पछाणै ॥
Understanding the Hukam of His Command, one acts according to His Will.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
Hukam Pashhaan Sachai Dhar Vaas ||
हुकमु पछाणि सचै दरि वासु ॥
Understanding the Hukam of His Command, he dwells in the Court of the True Lord.
ਕਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਲ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਏ ਨਾਸੁ ॥੭॥
Kaal Bikaal Sabadh Bheae Naas ||7||
काल बिकाल सबदि भए नासु ॥७॥
Through the Shabad, death and birth are ended. ||7||
ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ॥
Rehai Atheeth Jaanai Sabh This Kaa ||
रहै अतीतु जाणै सभु तिस का ॥
He remains detached, knowing that everything belongs to God.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪੈ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ॥
Than Man Arapai Hai Eihu Jis Kaa ||
तनु मनु अरपै है इहु जिस का ॥
He dedicates his body and mind unto the One who owns them.
ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Naa Ouhu Aavai Naa Ouhu Jaae ||
ना ओहु आवै ना ओहु जाइ ॥
He does not come, and he does not go.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੨॥
Naanak Saachae Saach Samaae ||8||2||
नानक साचे साचि समाइ ॥८॥२॥
O Nanak, absorbed in Truth, he merges in the True Lord. ||8||2||

जगु कऊआ मुखि चुंच गिआनु ॥
The world is like a crow; with its beak, it croaks spiritual wisdom.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
Anthar Lobh Jhooth Abhimaan ||
अंतरि लोभु झूठु अभिमानु ॥
But deep within there is greed, falsehood and pride.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਾਜੁ ਲਹਗੁ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੧॥
Bin Naavai Paaj Lehag Nidhaan ||1||
बिनु नावै पाजु लहगु निदानि ॥१॥
Without the Name of the Lord, your thin outer covering shall wear off, you fool. ||1||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
Sathigur Saev Naam Vasai Man Cheeth ||
सतिगुर सेवि नामु वसै मनि चीति ॥
Serving the True Guru, the Naam shall dwell in your conscious mind.
ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Gur Bhaettae Har Naam Chaethaavai Bin Naavai Hor Jhooth Pareeth ||1|| Rehaao ||
गुरु भेटे हरि नामु चेतावै बिनु नावै होर झूठु परीति ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Meeting with the Guru, the Name of the Lord comes to mind. Without the Name, other loves are false. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
Gur Kehiaa Saa Kaar Kamaavahu ||
गुरि कहिआ सा कार कमावहु ॥
So do that work, which the Guru tells you to do.
ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹੁ ॥
Sabadh Cheenih Sehaj Ghar Aavahu ||
सबदु चीन्हि सहज घरि आवहु ॥
Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, you shall come to the home of celestial bliss.
ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੨॥
Saachai Naae Vaddaaee Paavahu ||2||
साचै नाइ वडाई पावहु ॥२॥
Through the True Name, you shall obtain glorious greatness. ||2||
ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਲੋਕ ਬੁਝਾਵੈ ॥
Aap N Boojhai Lok Bujhaavai ||
आपि न बूझै लोक बुझावै ॥
One who does not understand his own self, but still tries to instruct others,
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
Man Kaa Andhhaa Andhh Kamaavai ||
मन का अंधा अंधु कमावै ॥
Is mentally blind, and acts in blindness.
ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਠਉਰੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
Dhar Ghar Mehal Thour Kaisae Paavai ||3||
दरु घरु महलु ठउरु कैसे पावै ॥३॥
How can he ever find a home and a place of rest, in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence? ||3||
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
Har Jeeo Saeveeai Antharajaamee ||
हरि जीउ सेवीऐ अंतरजामी ॥
Serve the Dear Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts;
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥
Ghatt Ghatt Anthar Jis Kee Joth Samaanee ||
घट घट अंतरि जिस की जोति समानी ॥
Deep within each and every heart, His Light is shining forth.
ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਚਲੈ ਪਹਨਾਮੀ ॥੪॥
This Naal Kiaa Chalai Pehanaamee ||4||
तिसु नालि किआ चलै पहनामी ॥४॥
How can anyone hide anything from Him? ||4||
