Be Merciful, and attach me to the hem of Your robe.

दीना नाथ दइआल मेरे सुआमी दीना नाथ दइआल ॥
O Merciful Master of the meek, You are my Lord and Master, O Merciful Master of the meek.

संसारु बिखिआ कूप ॥
The world is a pit of poison,
ਤਮ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਮੋਹਤ ਘੂਪ ॥
Tham Agiaan Mohath Ghoop ||
तम अगिआन मोहत घूप ॥
Filled with the utter darkness of ignorance and emotional attachment.
ਗਹਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
Gehi Bhujaa Prabh Jee Laehu ||
गहि भुजा प्रभ जी लेहु ॥
Please take my hand, and save me, Dear God.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਦੇਹੁ ॥
Har Naam Apunaa Dhaehu ||
हरि नामु अपुना देहु ॥
Please bless me with Your Name, Lord.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਠਾਉ ॥
Prabh Thujh Binaa Nehee Thaao ||
प्रभ तुझ बिना नही ठाउ ॥
Without You, God, I have no place at all.
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੨॥
Naanakaa Bal Bal Jaao ||2||
नानका बलि बलि जाउ ॥२॥
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to You. ||2||
ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧੀ ਦੇਹ ॥
Lobh Mohi Baadhhee Dhaeh ||
लोभि मोहि बाधी देह ॥
The human body is in the grip of greed and attachment.
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਖੇਹ ॥
Bin Bhajan Hovath Khaeh ||
बिनु भजन होवत खेह ॥
Without meditating and vibrating upon the Lord, it is reduced to ashes.
ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ॥
Jamadhooth Mehaa Bhaeiaan ||
जमदूत महा भइआन ॥
The Messenger of Death is dreadful and horrible.
ਚਿਤ ਗੁਪਤ ਕਰਮਹਿ ਜਾਨ ॥
Chith Gupath Karamehi Jaan ||
चित गुपत करमहि जान ॥
The recording scribes of the conscious and the unconscious, Chitr and Gupt, know all actions and karma.
ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਾਖਿ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥
Dhin Rain Saakh Sunaae ||
दिनु रैनि साखि सुनाइ ॥
Day and night, they bear witness.
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਨਾਇ ॥੩॥
Naanakaa Har Saranaae ||3||
नानका हरि सरनाइ ॥३॥
Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Lord. ||3||
ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨਾ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥
Bhai Bhanjanaa Muraar ||
भै भंजना मुरारि ॥
O Lord, Destroyer of fear and egotism,
ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਿ ॥
Kar Dhaeiaa Pathith Oudhhaar ||
करि दइआ पतित उधारि ॥
Be merciful, and save the sinners.
ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋਖ ਗਨੇ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
Maerae Dhokh Ganae N Jaahi ||
मेरे दोख गने न जाहि ॥
My sins cannot even be counted.
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਤਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
Har Binaa Kathehi Samaahi ||
हरि बिना कतहि समाहि ॥
Without the Lord, who can hide them?
ਗਹਿ ਓਟ ਚਿਤਵੀ ਨਾਥ ॥
Gehi Outt Chithavee Naathh ||
गहि ओट चितवी नाथ ॥
I thought of Your Support, and seized it, O my Lord and Master.
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੇ ਰਖੁ ਹਾਥ ॥੪॥
Naanakaa Dhae Rakh Haathh ||4||
नानका दे रखु हाथ ॥४॥
Please, give Nanak Your hand and save him, Lord! ||4||
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥
Har Gun Nidhhae Gopaal ||
हरि गुण निधे गोपाल ॥
The Lord, the treasure of virtue, the Lord of the world,
ਸਰਬ ਘਟ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥
Sarab Ghatt Prathipaal ||
सरब घट प्रतिपाल ॥
Cherishes and and sustains every heart.
ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਪਿਆਸ ॥
Man Preeth Dharasan Piaas ||
मनि प्रीति दरसन पिआस ॥
My mind is thirsty for Your Love, and the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸ ॥
Gobindh Pooran Aas ||
गोबिंद पूरन आस ॥
O Lord of the Universe, please fulfill my hopes.
ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Eik Nimakh Rehan N Jaae ||
इक निमख रहनु न जाइ ॥
I cannot survive, even for an instant.
ਵਡ ਭਾਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥
Vadd Bhaag Naanak Paae ||5||
वड भागि नानक पाइ ॥५॥
By great good fortune, Nanak has found the Lord. ||5||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਹੋਰ ॥

प्रभ तुझ बिना नही होर ॥
Without You, God, there is no other at all.
ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਚੰਦ ਚਕੋਰ ॥

मनि प्रीति चंद चकोर ॥
My mind loves You, as the partridge loves the moon,
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨ ਜਲ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
Jio Meen Jal Sio Haeth ||
जिउ मीन जल सिउ हेतु ॥
As the fish loves the water,
ਅਲਿ ਕਮਲ ਭਿੰਨੁ ਨ ਭੇਤੁ ॥
Al Kamal Bhinn N Bhaeth ||
अलि कमल भिंनु न भेतु ॥
As the bee and the lotus cannot be separated.
ਜਿਉ ਚਕਵੀ ਸੂਰਜ ਆਸ ॥
Jio Chakavee Sooraj Aas ||
जिउ चकवी सूरज आस ॥
As the chakvi bird longs for the sun,
ਨਾਨਕ ਚਰਨ ਪਿਆਸ ॥੬॥
Naanak Charan Piaas ||6||
नानक चरन पिआस ॥६॥
So does Nanak thirst for the Lord's feet. ||6||
ਜਿਉ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਭਰਤ ਪਰਾਨ ॥
Jio Tharun Bharath Paraan ||
जिउ तरुनि भरत परान ॥
As the young bride places the hopes of her life in her husband,
ਜਿਉ ਲੋਭੀਐ ਧਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
Jio Lobheeai Dhhan Dhaan ||
जिउ लोभीऐ धनु दानु ॥
As the greedy person looks upon the gift of wealth,
ਜਿਉ ਦੂਧ ਜਲਹਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥
Jio Dhoodhh Jalehi Sanjog ||
जिउ दूध जलहि संजोगु ॥
As milk is joined to water,
ਜਿਉ ਮਹਾ ਖੁਧਿਆਰਥ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
Jio Mehaa Khudhhiaarathh Bhog ||
जिउ महा खुधिआरथ भोगु ॥
As food is to the very hungry man,
ਜਿਉ ਮਾਤ ਪੂਤਹਿ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
Jio Maath Poothehi Haeth ||
जिउ मात पूतहि हेतु ॥
And as the mother loves her son,
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇਤ ॥੭॥
Har Simar Naanak Naeth ||7||
हरि सिमरि नानक नेत ॥७॥
So does Nanak constantly remember the Lord in meditation. ||7||
ਜਿਉ ਦੀਪ ਪਤਨ ਪਤੰਗ ॥
Jio Dheep Pathan Pathang ||
जिउ दीप पतन पतंग ॥
As the moth falls into the lamp,
ਜਿਉ ਚੋਰੁ ਹਿਰਤ ਨਿਸੰਗ ॥
Jio Chor Hirath Nisang ||
जिउ चोरु हिरत निसंग ॥
As the thief steals without hesitation,
ਮੈਗਲਹਿ ਕਾਮੈ ਬੰਧੁ ॥
Maigalehi Kaamai Bandhh ||
मैगलहि कामै बंधु ॥
As the elephant is trapped by its sexual urges,
ਜਿਉ ਗ੍ਰਸਤ ਬਿਖਈ ਧੰਧੁ ॥
Jio Grasath Bikhee Dhhandhh ||
जिउ ग्रसत बिखई धंधु ॥
As the sinner is caught in his sins,
ਜਿਉ ਜੂਆਰ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Jio Jooaar Bisan N Jaae ||
जिउ जूआर बिसनु न जाइ ॥
As the gambler's addiction does not leave him,
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੮॥
Har Naanak Eihu Man Laae ||8||
हरि नानक इहु मनु लाइ ॥८॥
So is this mind of Nanak's attached to the Lord. ||8||
ਕੁਰੰਕ ਨਾਦੈ ਨੇਹੁ ॥
Kurank Naadhai Naehu ||
कुरंक नादै नेहु ॥
As the deer loves the sound of the bell,
ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੁ ਚਾਹਤ ਮੇਹੁ ॥
Chaathrik Chaahath Maehu ||
चात्रिकु चाहत मेहु ॥
And as the song-bird longs for the rain,
ਜਨ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ॥
Jan Jeevanaa Sathasang ||
जन जीवना सतसंगि ॥
The Lord's humble servant lives in the Society of the Saints,
ਗੋਬਿਦੁ ਭਜਨਾ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
Gobidh Bhajanaa Rang ||
गोबिदु भजना रंगि ॥
Lovingly meditating and vibrating upon the Lord of the Universe.
ਰਸਨਾ ਬਖਾਨੈ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
Rasanaa Bakhaanai Naam ||
रसना बखानै नामु ॥
My tongue chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸਨ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੯॥
Naanak Dharasan Dhaan ||9||
नानक दरसन दानु ॥९॥
Please bless Nanak with the gift of the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. ||9||
ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਸੁਨਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੇਇ ॥
Gun Gaae Sun Likh Dhaee ||
गुन गाइ सुनि लिखि देइ ॥
One who sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and hears them, and writes them,
ਸੋ ਸਰਬ ਫਲ ਹਰਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
So Sarab Fal Har Laee ||
सो सरब फल हरि लेइ ॥
Receives all fruits and rewards from the Lord.
ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹ ਕਰਤ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥
Kul Samooh Karath Oudhhaar ||
कुल समूह करत उधारु ॥
He saves all his ancestors and generations,
ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
Sansaar Outharas Paar ||
संसारु उतरसि पारि ॥
And crosses over the world-ocean.
ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਤਾਹਿ ॥
Har Charan Bohithh Thaahi ||
हरि चरन बोहिथ ताहि ॥
The Lord's Feet are the boat to carry him across.
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਹਿ ॥
Mil Saadhhasang Jas Gaahi ||
मिलि साधसंगि जसु गाहि ॥
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, he sings the Praises of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥
Har Paij Rakhai Muraar ||
हरि पैज रखै मुरारि ॥
The Lord protects his honor.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥੧੦॥੨॥

हरि नानक सरनि दुआरि ॥१०॥२॥
Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Lord's door. ||10||2||

Immortal, unborn, beyond social class or involvement.
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ॥
Agam Agochar Roop N Raekhiaa ||
अगम अगोचरु रूपु न रेखिआ ॥
He is inaccessible and unfathomable, with no form or feature.
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ॥
Khojath Khojath Ghatt Ghatt Dhaekhiaa ||
खोजत खोजत घटि घटि देखिआ ॥
Searching, searching, I have seen Him in each and every heart.
