Jog Jag Nihafal Thih Maano Jo Prabh Jas Bisaraavai ||1||
जोग जग निहफल तिह मानउ जो प्रभ जसु बिसरावै ॥१॥
Know that Yoga and sacrificial feasts are fruitless, if one forgets the Praises of God. ||1||
ਮਾਨ ਮੋਹ ਦੋਨੋ ਕਉ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
Maan Moh Dhono Ko Parehar Gobindh Kae Gun Gaavai ||
मान मोह दोनो कउ परहरि गोबिंद के गुन गावै ॥
One who lays aside both pride and attachment, sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੨॥
Kahu Naanak Eih Bidhh Ko Praanee Jeevan Mukath Kehaavai ||2||2||
कहु नानक इह बिधि को प्रानी जीवन मुकति कहावै ॥२॥२॥
Says Nanak, the mortal who does this is said to be 'jivan mukta' - liberated while yet alive. ||2||2||

ਜਾ ਮੈ ਭਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
Jaa Mai Bhajan Raam Ko Naahee ||
जा मै भजनु राम को नाही ॥
There is no meditation on the Lord within him.
ਤਿਹ ਨਰ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਯਹ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Thih Nar Janam Akaarathh Khoeiaa Yeh Raakhahu Man Maahee ||1|| Rehaao ||
तिह नर जनमु अकारथु खोइआ यह राखहु मन माही ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
That man wastes his life uselessly - keep this in mind. ||1||Pause||
ਤੀਰਥ ਕਰੈ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਫੁਨਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਨਹ ਮਨੂਆ ਬਸਿ ਜਾ ਕੋ ॥
Theerathh Karai Brath Fun Raakhai Neh Manooaa Bas Jaa Ko ||
तीरथ करै ब्रत फुनि राखै नह मनूआ बसि जा को ॥
He bathes at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and adheres to fasts, but he has no control over his mind.
ਨਿਹਫਲ ਧਰਮੁ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹਤ ਮੈ ਯਾ ਕਉ ॥੧॥
Nihafal Dhharam Thaahi Thum Maanahu Saach Kehath Mai Yaa Ko ||1||
निहफल धरमु ताहि तुम मानहु साचु कहत मै या कउ ॥१॥
Know that such religion is useless to him. I speak the Truth for his sake. ||1||
ਜੈਸੇ ਪਾਹਨੁ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਭੇਦੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਤਿਹ ਪਾਨੀ ॥
Jaisae Paahan Jal Mehi Raakhiou Bhaedhai Naahi Thih Paanee ||
जैसे पाहनु जल महि राखिओ भेदै नाहि तिह पानी ॥
It's like a stone, kept immersed in water; still, the water does not penetrate it.
ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਤੁਮ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਛਾਨਹੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਨ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
Thaisae Hee Thum Thaahi Pashhaanahu Bhagath Heen Jo Praanee ||2||
तैसे ही तुम ताहि पछानहु भगति हीन जो प्रानी ॥२॥
So, understand it: that mortal being who lacks devotional worship is just like that. ||2||
ਕਲ ਮੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਤ ਗੁਰੁ ਯਹ ਭੇਦੁ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥
Kal Mai Mukath Naam Thae Paavath Gur Yeh Bhaedh Bathaavai ||
कल मै मुकति नाम ते पावत गुरु यह भेदु बतावै ॥
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, liberation comes from the Naam. The Guru has revealed this secret.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਨਰੁ ਗਰੂਆ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੩॥੩॥

निकटि वसै देखै सभु सोई ॥
He dwells close at hand, and sees all,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
Guramukh Viralaa Boojhai Koee ||
गुरमुखि विरला बूझै कोई ॥
But how rare is the Gurmukh who understands this.
ਵਿਣੁ ਭੈ ਪਇਐ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
Vin Bhai Paeiai Bhagath N Hoee ||
विणु भै पइऐ भगति न होई ॥
Without the Fear of God, there is no devotional worship.
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥
Sabadh Rathae Sadhaa Sukh Hoee ||1||
सबदि रते सदा सुखु होई ॥१॥
Imbued with the Word of the Shabad, eternal peace is attained. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
Aisaa Giaan Padhaarathh Naam ||
ऐसा गिआनु पदारथु नामु ॥
Such is the spiritual wisdom, the treasure of the Naam;
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि पावसि रसि रसि मानु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Obtaining it, the Gurmukhs enjoy the subtle essence of this nectar. ||1||Pause||
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਕਥੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
Giaan Giaan Kathhai Sabh Koee ||
गिआनु गिआनु कथै सभु कोई ॥
Everyone talks about spiritual wisdom and spiritual knowledge.
ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
Kathh Kathh Baadh Karae Dhukh Hoee ||
कथि कथि बादु करे दुखु होई ॥
Talking, talking, they argue, and suffer.
ਕਥਿ ਕਹਣੈ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
Kathh Kehanai Thae Rehai N Koee ||
कथि कहणै ते रहै न कोई ॥
No one can stop talking and discussing it.
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
Bin Ras Raathae Mukath N Hoee ||2||
बिनु रस राते मुकति न होई ॥२॥
Without being imbued with the subtle essence, there is no liberation. ||2||
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥
Giaan Dhhiaan Sabh Gur Thae Hoee ||
गिआनु धिआनु सभु गुर ते होई ॥
Spiritual wisdom and meditation all come from the Guru.
ਸਾਚੀ ਰਹਤ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
Saachee Rehath Saachaa Man Soee ||
साची रहत साचा मनि सोई ॥
Through the lifestyle of Truth, the True Lord comes to dwell in the mind.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਥਨੀ ਹੈ ਪਰੁ ਰਹਤ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
Manamukh Kathhanee Hai Par Rehath N Hoee ||
मनमुख कथनी है परु रहत न होई ॥
The self-willed manmukh talks about it, but does not practice it.
ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਥਾਉ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥
Naavahu Bhoolae Thhaao N Koee ||3||
नावहु भूले थाउ न कोई ॥३॥
Forgetting the Name, he finds no place of rest. ||3||
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੰਧਿਓ ਸਰ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
Man Maaeiaa Bandhhiou Sar Jaal ||
मनु माइआ बंधिओ सर जालि ॥
Maya has caught the mind in the trap of the whirlpool.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬਿਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਖੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
Ghatt Ghatt Biaap Rehiou Bikh Naal ||
घटि घटि बिआपि रहिओ बिखु नालि ॥
Each and every heart is trapped by this bait of poison and sin.
ਜੋ ਆਂਜੈ ਸੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥
Jo Aaanjai So Dheesai Kaal ||
जो आंजै सो दीसै कालि ॥
See that whoever has come, is subject to death.
ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੀਧੋ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥੪॥
Kaaraj Seedhho Ridhai Samhaal ||4||
कारजु सीधो रिदै सम्हालि ॥४॥
Your affairs shall be adjusted, if you contemplate the Lord in your heart. ||4||
ਸੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
So Giaanee Jin Sabadh Liv Laaee ||
सो गिआनी जिनि सबदि लिव लाई ॥
He alone is a spiritual teacher, who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Word of the Shabad.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
Manamukh Houmai Path Gavaaee ||
मनमुखि हउमै पति गवाई ॥
The self-willed, egotistical manmukh loses his honor.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
Aapae Karathai Bhagath Karaaee ||
आपे करतै भगति कराई ॥
The Creator Lord Himself inspires us to His devotional worship.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੫॥
Guramukh Aapae Dhae Vaddiaaee ||5||
गुरमुखि आपे दे वडिआई ॥५॥
He Himself blesses the Gurmukh with glorious greatness. ||5||
ਰੈਣਿ ਅੰਧਾਰੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ॥
Rain Andhhaaree Niramal Joth ||
रैणि अंधारी निरमल जोति ॥
The life-night is dark, while the Divine Light is immaculate.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਕੁਚਲ ਕਛੋਤਿ ॥
Naam Binaa Jhoothae Kuchal Kashhoth ||
नाम बिना झूठे कुचल कछोति ॥
Those who lack the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are false, filthy and untouchable.
ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰੋਤਿ ॥
Baedh Pukaarai Bhagath Saroth ||
बेदु पुकारै भगति सरोति ॥
The Vedas preach sermons of devotional worship.
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਾਨੈ ਵੇਖੈ ਜੋਤਿ ॥੬॥
Sun Sun Maanai Vaekhai Joth ||6||
सुणि सुणि मानै वेखै जोति ॥६॥
Listening, hearing and believing, one beholds the Divine Light. ||6||
ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਮੰ ॥

सासत्र सिम्रिति नामु द्रिड़ामं ॥
The Shaastras and Simritees implant the Naam within.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਰਾਮੰ ॥

गुरमुखि सांति ऊतम करामं ॥
The Gurmukh lives in peace and tranquility, doing deeds of sublime purity.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਦੂਖ ਸਹਾਮੰ ॥
Manamukh Jonee Dhookh Sehaaman ||
मनमुखि जोनी दूख सहामं ॥
The self-willed manmukh suffers the pains of reincarnation.
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੇ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਮੰ ॥੭॥
Bandhhan Thoottae Eik Naam Vasaaman ||7||
बंधन तूटे इकु नामु वसामं ॥७॥
His bonds are broken, enshrining the Name of the One Lord. ||7||
ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
Mannae Naam Sachee Path Poojaa ||
मंने नामु सची पति पूजा ॥
Believing in the Naam, one obtains true honor and adoration.
ਕਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
Kis Vaekhaa Naahee Ko Dhoojaa ||
किसु वेखा नाही को दूजा ॥
Who should I see? There is none other than the Lord.
ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥
Dhaekh Keho Bhaavai Man Soe ||
देखि कहउ भावै मनि सोइ ॥
I see, and I say, that He alone is pleasing to my mind.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੧॥
Naanak Kehai Avar Nehee Koe ||8||1||
नानकु कहै अवरु नही कोइ ॥८॥१॥
Says Nanak, there is no other at all. ||8||1||
