सलोक मः १ ॥
Shalok, First Mehl:
ਚੋਰਾ ਜਾਰਾ ਰੰਡੀਆ ਕੁਟਣੀਆ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
Choraa Jaaraa Randdeeaa Kuttaneeaa Dheebaan ||
चोरा जारा रंडीआ कुटणीआ दीबाणु ॥
Thieves, adulterers, prostitutes and pimps,
ਵੇਦੀਨਾ ਕੀ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਵੇਦੀਨਾ ਕਾ ਖਾਣੁ ॥
Vaedheenaa Kee Dhosathee Vaedheenaa Kaa Khaan ||
वेदीना की दोसती वेदीना का खाणु ॥
Make friendships with the unrighteous, and eat with the unrighteous.
ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਸਦਾ ਵਸੈ ਸੈਤਾਨੁ ॥
Sifathee Saar N Jaananee Sadhaa Vasai Saithaan ||
सिफती सार न जाणनी सदा वसै सैतानु ॥
They do not know the value of the Lord's Praises, and Satan is always with them.
ਗਦਹੁ ਚੰਦਨਿ ਖਉਲੀਐ ਭੀ ਸਾਹੂ ਸਿਉ ਪਾਣੁ ॥
Gadhahu Chandhan Khouleeai Bhee Saahoo Sio Paan ||
गदहु चंदनि खउलीऐ भी साहू सिउ पाणु ॥
If a donkey is anointed with sandalwood paste, he still loves to roll in the dirt.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੂੜੈ ਕਤਿਐ ਕੂੜਾ ਤਣੀਐ ਤਾਣੁ ॥
Naanak Koorrai Kathiai Koorraa Thaneeai Thaan ||
नानक कूड़ै कतिऐ कूड़ा तणीऐ ताणु ॥
O Nanak, by spinning falsehood, a fabric of falsehood is woven.
ਕੂੜਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਕਛੀਐ ਕੂੜਾ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੧॥
Koorraa Kaparr Kashheeai Koorraa Painan Maan ||1||
कूड़ा कपड़ु कछीऐ कूड़ा पैनणु माणु ॥१॥
False is the cloth and its measurement, and false is pride in such a garment. ||1||

ਬਾਂਗਾ ਬੁਰਗੂ ਸਿੰਙੀਆ ਨਾਲੇ ਮਿਲੀ ਕਲਾਣ ॥
Baangaa Buragoo Sinn(g)eeaa Naalae Milee Kalaan ||
बांगा बुरगू सिंङीआ नाले मिली कलाण ॥
The callers to prayer, the flute-players, the horn-blowers, and also the singers
ਇਕਿ ਦਾਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
Eik Dhaathae Eik Mangathae Naam Thaeraa Paravaan ||
इकि दाते इकि मंगते नामु तेरा परवाणु ॥
- some are givers, and some are beggars; they become acceptable only through Your Name, Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਕੈ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਹਉ ਤਿਨਾ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
Naanak Jinhee Sun Kai Manniaa Ho Thinaa Vittahu Kurabaan ||2||
नानक जिन्ही सुणि कै मंनिआ हउ तिना विटहु कुरबाणु ॥२॥
O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to those who hear and accept the Name. ||2||

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਹੈ ਕੂੜੋ ਹੋਇ ਗਇਆ ॥
Maaeiaa Mohu Sabh Koorr Hai Koorro Hoe Gaeiaa ||
माइआ मोहु सभु कूड़ु है कूड़ो होइ गइआ ॥
Attachment to Maya is totally false, and false are those who go that way.
ਹਉਮੈ ਝਗੜਾ ਪਾਇਓਨੁ ਝਗੜੈ ਜਗੁ ਮੁਇਆ ॥
Houmai Jhagarraa Paaeioun Jhagarrai Jag Mueiaa ||
हउमै झगड़ा पाइओनु झगड़ै जगु मुइआ ॥
Through egotism, the world is caught in conflict and strife, and it dies.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਝਗੜੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਓਨੁ ਇਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥
Guramukh Jhagarr Chukaaeioun Eiko Rav Rehiaa ||
गुरमुखि झगड़ु चुकाइओनु इको रवि रहिआ ॥
The Gurmukh is free of conflict and strife, and sees the One Lord, pervading everywhere.
ਸਭੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਰਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
Sabh Aatham Raam Pashhaaniaa Bhoujal Thar Gaeiaa ||
सभु आतम रामु पछाणिआ भउजलु तरि गइआ ॥
Recognizing that the Supreme Soul is everywhere, he crosses over the terrifying world-ocean.
ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਇਆ ॥੧੪॥
Joth Samaanee Joth Vich Har Naam Samaeiaa ||14||
जोति समाणी जोति विचि हरि नामि समइआ ॥१४॥
His light merges into the Light, and he is absorbed into the Lord's Name. ||14||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਦੇਹਿ ਮੈ ਤੂੰ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥੁ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥
Sathigur Bheekhiaa Dhaehi Mai Thoon Sanmrathh Dhaathaar ||
सतिगुर भीखिआ देहि मै तूं सम्रथु दातारु ॥
O True Guru, bless me with Your charity; You are the All-powerful Giver.
ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
Houmai Garab Nivaareeai Kaam Krodhh Ahankaar ||
हउमै गरबु निवारीऐ कामु क्रोधु अहंकारु ॥
May I subdue and quiet my egotism, pride, sexual desire, anger and self-conceit.
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਪਰਜਾਲੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
Lab Lobh Parajaaleeai Naam Milai Aadhhaar ||
लबु लोभु परजालीऐ नामु मिलै आधारु ॥
Burn away all my greed, and give me the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਵਤਨ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਮੈਲਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
Ahinis Navathan Niramalaa Mailaa Kabehoon N Hoe ||
अहिनिसि नवतन निरमला मैला कबहूं न होइ ॥
Day and night, keep me ever-fresh and new, spotless and pure; let me never be soiled by sin.
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
Naanak Eih Bidhh Shhutteeai Nadhar Thaeree Sukh Hoe ||1||
नानक इह बिधि छुटीऐ नदरि तेरी सुखु होइ ॥१॥
O Nanak, in this way I am saved; by Your Grace, I have found peace. ||1||

ਇਕੋ ਕੰਤੁ ਸਬਾਈਆ ਜਿਤੀ ਦਰਿ ਖੜੀਆਹ ॥
Eiko Kanth Sabaaeeaa Jithee Dhar Kharreeaah ||
इको कंतु सबाईआ जिती दरि खड़ीआह ॥
There is only the one Husband Lord, for all who stand at His Door.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੰਤੈ ਰਤੀਆ ਪੁਛਹਿ ਬਾਤੜੀਆਹ ॥੨॥
Naanak Kanthai Ratheeaa Pushhehi Baatharreeaah ||2||
नानक कंतै रतीआ पुछहि बातड़ीआह ॥२॥
O Nanak, they ask for news of their Husband Lord, from those who are imbued with His Love. ||2||

ਸਭੇ ਕੰਤੈ ਰਤੀਆ ਮੈ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਕਿਤੁ ॥
Sabhae Kanthai Ratheeaa Mai Dhohaagan Kith ||
सभे कंतै रतीआ मै दोहागणि कितु ॥
All are imbued with love for their Husband Lord; I am a discarded bride - what good am I?
ਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਏਤੜੇ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਫੇਰੇ ਚਿਤੁ ॥੩॥
Mai Than Avagan Eaetharrae Khasam N Faerae Chith ||3||
मै तनि अवगण एतड़े खसमु न फेरे चितु ॥३॥
My body is filled with so many faults; my Lord and Master does not even turn His thoughts to me. ||3||

ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਦੈ ਵਾਤਿ ॥
Ho Balihaaree Thin Ko Sifath Jinaa Dhai Vaath ||
हउ बलिहारी तिन कउ सिफति जिना दै वाति ॥
I am a sacrifice to those who praise the Lord with their mouths.
ਸਭਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਇਕ ਮੈ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੪॥
Sabh Raathee Sohaaganee Eik Mai Dhohaagan Raath ||4||
सभि राती सोहागणी इक मै दोहागणि राति ॥४॥
All the nights are for the happy soul-brides; I am a discarded bride - if only I could have even one night with Him! ||4||

ਦਰਿ ਮੰਗਤੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ॥
Dhar Mangath Jaachai Dhaan Har Dheejai Kirapaa Kar ||
दरि मंगतु जाचै दानु हरि दीजै क्रिपा करि ॥
I am a beggar at Your Door, begging for charity; O Lord, please grant me Your Mercy, and give to me.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ॥
Guramukh Laehu Milaae Jan Paavai Naam Har ||
गुरमुखि लेहु मिलाइ जनु पावै नामु हरि ॥
As Gurmukh, unite me, your humble servant, with You, that I may receive Your Name.
ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰਿ ॥
Anehadh Sabadh Vajaae Jothee Joth Dhhar ||
अनहद सबदु वजाइ जोती जोति धरि ॥
Then, the unstruck melody of the Shabad will vibrate and resound, and my light will blend with the Light.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਹਰਿ ॥
Hiradhai Har Gun Gaae Jai Jai Sabadh Har ||
हिरदै हरि गुण गाइ जै जै सबदु हरि ॥
Within my heart,I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord,and celebrate the Word of the Lord's Shabad.
ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ॥੧੫॥
Jag Mehi Varathai Aap Har Saethee Preeth Kar ||15||
जग महि वरतै आपि हरि सेती प्रीति करि ॥१५॥
The Lord Himself is pervading and permeating the world; so fall in love with Him! ||15||

ਜਿਨੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸੁ ਕੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਸਾਉ ॥
Jinee N Paaeiou Praem Ras Kanth N Paaeiou Saao ||
जिनी न पाइओ प्रेम रसु कंत न पाइओ साउ ॥
Those who do not obtain the sublime essence, the love and delight of their Husband Lord,
ਸੁੰਞੇ ਘਰ ਕਾ ਪਾਹੁਣਾ ਜਿਉ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥
Sunnjae Ghar Kaa Paahunaa Jio Aaeiaa Thio Jaao ||1||
सुंञे घर का पाहुणा जिउ आइआ तिउ जाउ ॥१॥
Are like guests in a deserted house; they leave just as they have come, empty-handed. ||1||

ਸਉ ਓਲਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਦਿਨੈ ਕੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਿਲਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਸਹੰਸ ॥
So Oulaamhae Dhinai Kae Raathee Milanih Sehans ||
सउ ओलाम्हे दिनै के राती मिलन्हि सहंस ॥
He receives hundreds and thousands of reprimands, day and night;
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹਣੁ ਛਡਿ ਕੈ ਕਰੰਗੀ ਲਗਾ ਹੰਸੁ ॥
Sifath Salaahan Shhadd Kai Karangee Lagaa Hans ||
सिफति सलाहणु छडि कै करंगी लगा हंसु ॥
The swan-soul has renounced the Lord's Praises, and attached itself to a rotting carcass.
ਫਿਟੁ ਇਵੇਹਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਇ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਪੇਟੁ ॥
Fitt Eivaehaa Jeeviaa Jith Khaae Vadhhaaeiaa Paett ||
फिटु इवेहा जीविआ जितु खाइ वधाइआ पेटु ॥
Cursed is that life, in which one only eats to fill his belly.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਭੋ ਦੁਸਮਨੁ ਹੇਤੁ ॥੨॥
Naanak Sachae Naam Vin Sabho Dhusaman Haeth ||2||
नानक सचे नाम विणु सभो दुसमनु हेतु ॥२॥
O Nanak, without the True Name, all one's friends turn to enemies. ||2||

ਢਾਢੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
Dtaadtee Gun Gaavai Nith Janam Savaariaa ||
ढाढी गुण गावै नित जनमु सवारिआ ॥
The minstrel continually sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, to embellish his life.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਸਚਾ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥
Guramukh Saev Salaahi Sachaa Our Dhhaariaa ||
गुरमुखि सेवि सलाहि सचा उर धारिआ ॥
The Gurmukh serves and praises the True Lord, enshrining Him within his heart.
