Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਬੇਲਿ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਫਲੁ ਹੂਆ ॥
Karam Karathooth Bael Bisathhaaree Raam Naam Fal Hooaa ||
करम करतूति बेलि बिसथारी राम नामु फलु हूआ ॥
The vine of good actions and character has spread out, and it bears the fruit of the Lord's Name.
ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਕੀਆ ॥੧॥
This Roop N Raekh Anaahadh Vaajai Sabadh Niranjan Keeaa ||1||
तिसु रूपु न रेख अनाहदु वाजै सबदु निरंजनि कीआ ॥१॥
The Name has no form or outline; it vibrates with the unstruck Sound Current; through the Word of the Shabad, the Immaculate Lord is revealed. ||1||
ਕਰੇ ਵਖਿਆਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ॥
Karae Vakhiaan Jaanai Jae Koee ||
करे वखिआणु जाणै जे कोई ॥
One can speak on this only when he knows it.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Anmrith Peevai Soee ||1|| Rehaao ||
अम्रितु पीवै सोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
He alone drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪੀਆ ਸੇ ਮਸਤ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਤੂਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਫਾਹੇ ॥
Jinh Peeaa Sae Masath Bheae Hai Thoottae Bandhhan Faahae ||
जिन्ह पीआ से मसत भए है तूटे बंधन फाहे ॥
Those who drink it in are enraptured; their bonds and shackles are cut away.
ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਛੋਡੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਲਾਹੇ ॥੨॥
Jothee Joth Samaanee Bheethar Thaa Shhoddae Maaeiaa Kae Laahae ||2||
जोती जोति समाणी भीतरि ता छोडे माइआ के लाहे ॥२॥
When one's light blends into the Divine Light, then the desire for Maya is ended. ||2||
ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Sarab Joth Roop Thaeraa Dhaekhiaa Sagal Bhavan Thaeree Maaeiaa ||
सरब जोति रूपु तेरा देखिआ सगल भवन तेरी माइआ ॥
Among all lights, I behold Your Form; all the worlds are Your Maya.
ਰਾਰੈ ਰੂਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
Raarai Roop Niraalam Baithaa Nadhar Karae Vich Shhaaeiaa ||3||
रारै रूपि निरालमु बैठा नदरि करे विचि छाइआ ॥३॥
Among the tumults and forms, He sits in serene detachment; He bestows His Glance of Grace upon those who are engrossed in the illusion. ||3||
ਬੀਣਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਵੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
Beenaa Sabadh Vajaavai Jogee Dharasan Roop Apaaraa ||
बीणा सबदु वजावै जोगी दरसनि रूपि अपारा ॥
The Yogi who plays on the instrument of the Shabad gains the Blessed Vision of the Infinitely Beautiful Lord.
ਸਬਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਦਿ ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੮॥
Sabadh Anaahadh So Sahu Raathaa Naanak Kehai Vichaaraa ||4||8||
सबदि अनाहदि सो सहु राता नानकु कहै विचारा ॥४॥८॥
He, the Lord, is immersed in the Unstruck Shabad of the Word, says Nanak, the humble and meek. ||4||8||

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਮੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰ ॥
Mai Gun Galaa Kae Sir Bhaar ||
मै गुण गला के सिरि भार ॥
My virtue is that I carry the load of my words upon my head.
ਗਲੀ ਗਲਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ॥
Galee Galaa Sirajanehaar ||
गली गला सिरजणहार ॥
The real words are the Words of the Creator Lord.
ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਹਸਣਾ ਬਾਦਿ ॥
Khaanaa Peenaa Hasanaa Baadh ||
खाणा पीणा हसणा बादि ॥
How useless are eating, drinking and laughing,
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਯਾਦਿ ॥੧॥
Jab Lag Ridhai N Aavehi Yaadh ||1||
जब लगु रिदै न आवहि यादि ॥१॥
If the Lord is not cherished in the heart! ||1||
ਤਉ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਕੇਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
Tho Paravaah Kaehee Kiaa Keejai ||
तउ परवाह केही किआ कीजै ॥
Why should someone care for anything else,
ਜਨਮਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੀਜੀ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Janam Janam Kishh Leejee Leejai ||1|| Rehaao ||
जनमि जनमि किछु लीजी लीजै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
If throughout his life, he gathers in that which is truly worth gathering? ||1||Pause||
ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਮਤਾਗਲੁ ਮਤਾ ॥
Man Kee Math Mathaagal Mathaa ||
मन की मति मतागलु मता ॥
The intellect of the mind is like a drunken elephant.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਖਤੋ ਖਤਾ ॥
Jo Kishh Boleeai Sabh Khatho Khathaa ||
जो किछु बोलीऐ सभु खतो खता ॥
Whatever one utters is totally false, the most false of the false.
ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਲੈ ਕੀਚੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
Kiaa Muhu Lai Keechai Aradhaas ||
किआ मुहु लै कीचै अरदासि ॥
So what face should we put on to offer our prayer,
ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਾਖੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
Paap Punn Dhue Saakhee Paas ||2||
पापु पुंनु दुइ साखी पासि ॥२॥
When both virtue and vice are close at hand as witnesses? ||2||
ਜੈਸਾ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੈਸਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
Jaisaa Thoon Karehi Thaisaa Ko Hoe ||
जैसा तूं करहि तैसा को होइ ॥
As You make us, so we become.
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
Thujh Bin Dhoojaa Naahee Koe ||
तुझ बिनु दूजा नाही कोइ ॥
Without You, there is no other at all.
ਜੇਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇਹੀ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Jaehee Thoon Math Dhaehi Thaehee Ko Paavai ||
जेही तूं मति देहि तेही को पावै ॥
As is the understanding which You bestow, so do we receive.
ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
Thudhh Aapae Bhaavai Thivai Chalaavai ||3||
तुधु आपे भावै तिवै चलावै ॥३॥
As it pleases Your Will, so do You lead us. ||3||
ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਪਰੀਆ ਪਰਵਾਰ ॥
Raag Rathan Pareeaa Paravaar ||
राग रतन परीआ परवार ॥
The divine crystalline harmonies, their consorts, and their celestial families
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਰ ॥
This Vich Oupajai Anmrith Saar ||
तिसु विचि उपजै अम्रितु सार ॥
From them, the essence of Ambrosial Nectar is produced.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
Naanak Karathae Kaa Eihu Dhhan Maal ||
नानक करते का इहु धनु मालु ॥
O Nanak, this is the wealth and property of the Creator Lord.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੯॥
Jae Ko Boojhai Eaehu Beechaar ||4||9||
जे को बूझै एहु बीचारु ॥४॥९॥
If only this essential reality were understood! ||4||9||

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਖੀਆ ਕਾਜੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
Kar Kirapaa Apanai Ghar Aaeiaa Thaa Mil Sakheeaa Kaaj Rachaaeiaa ||
करि किरपा अपनै घरि आइआ ता मिलि सखीआ काजु रचाइआ ॥
When by His Grace He came to my home, then my companions met together to celebrate my marriage.
ਖੇਲੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਨਿ ਅਨਦੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਹੁ ਵੀਆਹਣ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥
Khael Dhaekh Man Anadh Bhaeiaa Sahu Veeaahan Aaeiaa ||1||
खेलु देखि मनि अनदु भइआ सहु वीआहण आइआ ॥१॥
Beholding this play, my mind became blissful; my Husband Lord has come to marry me. ||1||
ਗਾਵਹੁ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Gaavahu Gaavahu Kaamanee Bibaek Beechaar ||
गावहु गावहु कामणी बिबेक बीचारु ॥
So sing - yes, sing the songs of wisdom and reflection, O brides.
ਹਮਰੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Hamarai Ghar Aaeiaa Jagajeevan Bhathaar ||1|| Rehaao ||
हमरै घरि आइआ जगजीवनु भतारु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
My spouse, the Life of the world, has come into my home. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹਮਰਾ ਵੀਆਹੁ ਜਿ ਹੋਆ ਜਾਂ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
Guroo Dhuaarai Hamaraa Veeaahu J Hoaa Jaan Sahu Miliaa Thaan Jaaniaa ||
गुरू दुआरै हमरा वीआहु जि होआ जां सहु मिलिआ तां जानिआ ॥
When I was married within the Gurdwara, the Guru's Gate, I met my Husband Lord, and I came to know Him.
ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਹੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
Thihu Lokaa Mehi Sabadh Raviaa Hai Aap Gaeiaa Man Maaniaa ||2||
तिहु लोका महि सबदु रविआ है आपु गइआ मनु मानिआ ॥२॥
The Word of His Shabad is pervading the three worlds; when my ego was quieted, my mind became happy. ||2||
ਆਪਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਹੋਰਨਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
Aapanaa Kaaraj Aap Savaarae Horan Kaaraj N Hoee ||
आपणा कारजु आपि सवारे होरनि कारजु न होई ॥
He Himself arranges His own affairs; His affairs cannot be arranged by anyone else.
ਜਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਦਇਆ ਧਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥
Jith Kaaraj Sath Santhokh Dhaeiaa Dhharam Hai Guramukh Boojhai Koee ||3||
जितु कारजि सतु संतोखु दइआ धरमु है गुरमुखि बूझै कोई ॥३॥
By the affair of this marriage, truth, contentment, mercy and faith are produced; but how rare is that Gurmukh who understands it! ||3||
ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥
Bhanath Naanak Sabhanaa Kaa Pir Eaeko Soe ||
भनति नानकु सभना का पिरु एको सोइ ॥
Says Nanak, that Lord alone is the Husband of all.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
Jis No Nadhar Karae Saa Sohaagan Hoe ||4||10||
जिस नो नदरि करे सा सोहागणि होइ ॥४॥१०॥
She, upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace, becomes the happy soul-bride. ||4||10||

ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਬਨੁ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
Grihu Ban Samasar Sehaj Subhaae ||
ग्रिहु बनु समसरि सहजि सुभाइ ॥
Home and forest are the same, for one who dwells in the balance of intuitive peace and poise.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਤੁ ਭਈ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਠਾਇ ॥
Dhuramath Gath Bhee Keerath Thaae ||
दुरमति गतु भई कीरति ठाइ ॥
His evil-mindedness departs, and the Praises of God take its place.
ਸਚ ਪਉੜੀ ਸਾਚਉ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਂਉ ॥
Sach Pourree Saacho Mukh Naano ||
सच पउड़ी साचउ मुखि नांउ ॥
To chant the True Name with one's mouth is the true ladder.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪਾਏ ਨਿਜ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥
Sathigur Saev Paaeae Nij Thhaao ||1||
सतिगुरु सेवि पाए निज थाउ ॥१॥
Serving the True Guru, one finds one's own place within the self. ||1||
