Baedh Pukaarai Mukh Thae Panddath Kaamaaman Kaa Maathaa ||
बेदु पुकारै मुख ते पंडत कामामन का माठा ॥
The Pandit, the religious scholar, proclaims the Vedas, but he is slow to act on them.
ਮੋਨੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਇਕਾਂਤੀ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਲਪਨ ਗਾਠਾ ॥
Monee Hoe Baithaa Eikaanthee Hiradhai Kalapan Gaathaa ||
मोनी होइ बैठा इकांती हिरदै कलपन गाठा ॥
Another person on silence sits alone, but his heart is tied in knots of desire.
ਹੋਇ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਠਾ ॥੧॥
Hoe Oudhaasee Grihu Thaj Chaliou Shhuttakai Naahee Naathaa ||1||
होइ उदासी ग्रिहु तजि चलिओ छुटकै नाही नाठा ॥१॥
Another becomes an Udaasi, a renunciate; he abandons his home and walks out on his family, but his wandering impulses do not leave him. ||1||

Who can I tell about the state of my soul?

आपि मुकतु मो कउ प्रभु मेले ऐसो कहा लहा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

ਤਪਸੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਾਧੀ ਮਨੂਆ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਨਾ ॥
Thapasee Kar Kai Dhaehee Saadhhee Manooaa Dheh Dhis Dhhaanaa ||
तपसी करि कै देही साधी मनूआ दह दिस धाना ॥
Someone may practice intensive meditation, and discipline his body, but his mind still runs around in ten directions.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਜੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਭਇਆ ਗੁਮਾਨਾ ॥
Brehamachaar Brehamachaj Keenaa Hiradhai Bhaeiaa Gumaanaa ||
ब्रहमचारि ब्रहमचजु कीना हिरदै भइआ गुमाना ॥
The celibate practices celibacy, but his heart is filled with pride.
ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਉਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
Sanniaasee Hoe Kai Theerathh Bhramiou Ous Mehi Krodhh Bigaanaa ||2||
संनिआसी होइ कै तीरथि भ्रमिओ उसु महि क्रोधु बिगाना ॥२॥
The Sannyaasi wanders around at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, but his mindless anger is still within him. ||2||
ਘੂੰਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਭਏ ਰਾਮਦਾਸਾ ਰੋਟੀਅਨ ਕੇ ਓਪਾਵਾ ॥
Ghoonghar Baadhh Bheae Raamadhaasaa Rotteean Kae Oupaavaa ||
घूंघर बाधि भए रामदासा रोटीअन के ओपावा ॥
The temple dancers tie bells around their ankles to earn their living.
ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰਮ ਖਟ ਕੀਨੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ॥
Barath Naem Karam Khatt Keenae Baahar Bhaekh Dhikhaavaa ||
बरत नेम करम खट कीने बाहरि भेख दिखावा ॥
Others go on fasts, take vows, perform the six rituals and wear religious robes for show.
ਗੀਤ ਨਾਦ ਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਅਲਾਪੇ ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵਾ ॥੩॥
Geeth Naadh Mukh Raag Alaapae Man Nehee Har Har Gaavaa ||3||
गीत नाद मुखि राग अलापे मनि नही हरि हरि गावा ॥३॥
Some sing songs and melodies and hymns, but their minds do not sing of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਰਹਤ ਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤਾ ॥
Harakh Sog Lobh Moh Rehath Hehi Niramal Har Kae Santhaa ||
हरख सोग लोभ मोह रहत हहि निरमल हरि के संता ॥
The Lord's Saints are immaculately pure; they are beyond pleasure and pain, beyond greed and attachment.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਧੂੜਿ ਪਾਏ ਮਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਾ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ ॥

तिन की धूड़ि पाए मनु मेरा जा दइआ करे भगवंता ॥
My mind obtains the dust of their feet, when the Lord God shows mercy.

One who has Your Name in his heart is the king of all the hundreds of thousands and millions of beings.

रूप रंग खुसीआ मन भोगण ते ते छिद्र विकारा ॥
The mind's pleasures of love and beauty bring just as many blames and sins.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਕਲਿਆਣਾ ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜੁ ਇਹੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

हरि का नामु निधानु कलिआणा सूख सहजु इहु सारा ॥२॥
The Name of the Lord is the treasure of Emancipation; it is absolute peace and poise. ||2||
ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਰੰਗ ਖਿਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਦਰ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
Maaeiaa Rang Birang Khinai Mehi Jio Baadhar Kee Shhaaeiaa ||
माइआ रंग बिरंग खिनै महि जिउ बादर की छाइआ ॥
The pleasures of Maya fade away in an instant, like the shade of a passing cloud.
ਸੇ ਲਾਲ ਭਏ ਗੂੜੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
Sae Laal Bheae Goorrai Rang Raathae Jin Gur Mil Har Har Gaaeiaa ||3||
से लाल भए गूड़ै रंगि राते जिन गुर मिलि हरि हरि गाइआ ॥३॥
They alone are dyed in the deep crimson of the Lord's Love, who meet the Guru, and sing the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
ਊਚ ਮੂਚ ਅਪਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਗਮ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥
Ooch Mooch Apaar Suaamee Agam Dharabaaraa ||
ऊच मूच अपार सुआमी अगम दरबारा ॥
My Lord and Master is lofty and exalted, grand and infinite. The Darbaar of His Court is inaccessible.

The forests, meadows, three worlds, water,

The four Vedas, the four sources of creation,

The countries, the continents and all the worlds,
ਏਕ ਕਵਾਵੈ ਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਹੋਆ ॥੧॥

एक कवावै ते सभि होआ ॥१॥
Have all come from the One Word of the Lord. ||1||
