Seethaa Lakhaman Vishhurr Gaeiaa ||
सीता लखमणु विछुड़ि गइआ ॥
And separated from Sita and Lakhshman.
ਰੋਵੈ ਦਹਸਿਰੁ ਲੰਕ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
Rovai Dhehasir Lank Gavaae ||
रोवै दहसिरु लंक गवाइ ॥
The ten-headed Raawan, who stole away Sita with the beat of his tambourine,
ਜਿਨਿ ਸੀਤਾ ਆਦੀ ਡਉਰੂ ਵਾਇ ॥
Jin Seethaa Aadhee Ddouroo Vaae ||
जिनि सीता आदी डउरू वाइ ॥
Wept when he lost Sri Lanka.
ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਂਡਵ ਭਏ ਮਜੂਰ ॥
Rovehi Paanddav Bheae Majoor ||
रोवहि पांडव भए मजूर ॥
The Paandavas once lived in the Presence of the Lord;
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਹਤ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
Jin Kai Suaamee Rehath Hadhoor ||
जिन कै सुआमी रहत हदूरि ॥
They were made slaves, and wept.
ਰੋਵੈ ਜਨਮੇਜਾ ਖੁਇ ਗਇਆ ॥
Rovai Janamaejaa Khue Gaeiaa ||
रोवै जनमेजा खुइ गइआ ॥
Janmayjaa wept, that he had lost his way.
ਏਕੀ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਪੀ ਭਇਆ ॥
Eaekee Kaaran Paapee Bhaeiaa ||
एकी कारणि पापी भइआ ॥
One mistake, and he became a sinner.
ਰੋਵਹਿ ਸੇਖ ਮਸਾਇਕ ਪੀਰ ॥
Rovehi Saekh Masaaeik Peer ||
रोवहि सेख मसाइक पीर ॥
The Shaykhs, Pirs and spiritual teachers weep;
ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਤੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਭੀੜ ॥
Anth Kaal Math Laagai Bheerr ||
अंति कालि मतु लागै भीड़ ॥
At the very last instant, they suffer in agony.
ਰੋਵਹਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਕੰਨ ਪੜਾਇ ॥
Rovehi Raajae Kann Parraae ||
रोवहि राजे कंन पड़ाइ ॥
The kings weep - their ears are cut;
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
Ghar Ghar Maagehi Bheekhiaa Jaae ||
घरि घरि मागहि भीखिआ जाइ ॥
They go begging from house to house.
ਰੋਵਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਨ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Rovehi Kirapan Sanchehi Dhhan Jaae ||
रोवहि किरपन संचहि धनु जाइ ॥
The miser weeps; he has to leave behind the wealth he has gathered.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
Panddith Rovehi Giaan Gavaae ||
पंडित रोवहि गिआनु गवाइ ॥
The Pandit, the religious scholar, weeps when his learning is gone.
ਬਾਲੀ ਰੋਵੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥
Baalee Rovai Naahi Bhathaar ||
बाली रोवै नाहि भतारु ॥
The young woman weeps because she has no husband.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
Naanak Dhukheeaa Sabh Sansaar ||
नानक दुखीआ सभु संसारु ॥
O Nanak, the whole world is suffering.
ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਣਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

मंने नाउ सोई जिणि जाइ ॥
He alone is victorious, who believes in the Lord's Name.

जपु तपु सभु किछु मंनिऐ अवरि कारा सभि बादि ॥
Meditation, austerity and everything come through belief in the Lord's Name. All other actions are useless.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥੨॥

नानक मंनिआ मंनीऐ बुझीऐ गुर परसादि ॥२॥
O Nanak, believe in the One who is worth believing in. By Guru's Grace, he is realized. ||2||

काइआ हंस धुरि मेलु करतै लिखि पाइआ ॥
The union of the body and the soul-swan was pre-ordained by the Creator Lord.
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਇਆ ॥
Sabh Mehi Gupath Varathadhaa Guramukh Pragattaaeiaa ||
सभ महि गुपतु वरतदा गुरमुखि प्रगटाइआ ॥
He is hidden, and yet pervading all. He is revealed to the Gurmukh.
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
Gun Gaavai Gun Oucharai Gun Maahi Samaaeiaa ||
गुण गावै गुण उचरै गुण माहि समाइआ ॥
Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and chanting His Praises, one merges in His Glories.
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
Sachee Baanee Sach Hai Sach Mael Milaaeiaa ||
सची बाणी सचु है सचु मेलि मिलाइआ ॥
True is the True Word of the Guru's Bani. One unites in Union with the True Lord.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੪॥
Sabh Kishh Aapae Aap Hai Aapae Dhaee Vaddiaaee ||14||
सभु किछु आपे आपि है आपे देइ वडिआई ॥१४॥
He Himself is everything; He Himself grants glorious greatness. ||14||

Shalok, Second Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਰਤਨਾ ਪਰਖਣ ਜਾਇ ॥
Naanak Andhhaa Hoe Kai Rathanaa Parakhan Jaae ||
नानक अंधा होइ कै रतना परखण जाइ ॥
O Nanak, the blind man may go to appraise the jewels,
ਰਤਨਾ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਆਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਲਖਾਇ ॥੧॥
Rathanaa Saar N Jaanee Aavai Aap Lakhaae ||1||
रतना सार न जाणई आवै आपु लखाइ ॥१॥
But he will not know their value; he will return home after exposing his ignorance. ||1||

ਰਤਨਾ ਕੇਰੀ ਗੁਥਲੀ ਰਤਨੀ ਖੋਲੀ ਆਇ ॥

रतना केरी गुथली रतनी खोली आइ ॥
The Jeweller has come, and opened up the bag of jewels.
ਵਖਰ ਤੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਦੁਹਾ ਰਹੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Vakhar Thai Vanajaariaa Dhuhaa Rehee Samaae ||
वखर तै वणजारिआ दुहा रही समाइ ॥
The merchandise and the merchant are merged together.
ਜਿਨ ਗੁਣੁ ਪਲੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਾਣਕ ਵਣਜਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥
Jin Gun Palai Naanakaa Maanak Vanajehi Saee ||
जिन गुणु पलै नानका माणक वणजहि सेइ ॥
They alone purchase the gem, O Nanak, who have virtue in their purse.
ਰਤਨਾ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਅੰਧੇ ਵਤਹਿ ਲੋਇ ॥੨॥
Rathanaa Saar N Jaananee Andhhae Vathehi Loe ||2||
रतना सार न जाणनी अंधे वतहि लोइ ॥२॥
Those who do not appreciate the value of the jewels, wander like blind men in the world. ||2||

No Dharavaajae Kaaeiaa Kott Hai Dhasavai Gupath Rakheejai ||
नउ दरवाजे काइआ कोटु है दसवै गुपतु रखीजै ॥
The fortress of the body has nine gates; the tenth gate is kept hidden.
ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਨ ਖੁਲਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਖੁਲੀਜੈ ॥
Bajar Kapaatt N Khulanee Gur Sabadh Khuleejai ||
बजर कपाट न खुलनी गुर सबदि खुलीजै ॥
The rigid door is not open; only through the Word of the Guru's Shabad can it be opened.
ਅਨਹਦ ਵਾਜੇ ਧੁਨਿ ਵਜਦੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਣੀਜੈ ॥
Anehadh Vaajae Dhhun Vajadhae Gur Sabadh Suneejai ||
अनहद वाजे धुनि वजदे गुर सबदि सुणीजै ॥
The unstruck sound current resounds and vibrates there. The Word of the Guru's Shabad is heard.
ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੀਜੈ ॥
Thith Ghatt Anthar Chaananaa Kar Bhagath Mileejai ||
तितु घट अंतरि चानणा करि भगति मिलीजै ॥
Deep within the nucleus of the heart, the Divine Light shines forth. Through devotional worship, one meets the Lord.
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਰਚਨ ਰਚਾਈ ॥੧੫॥
Sabh Mehi Eaek Varathadhaa Jin Aapae Rachan Rachaaee ||15||
सभ महि एकु वरतदा जिनि आपे रचन रचाई ॥१५॥
The One Lord is pervading and permeating all. He Himself created the creation. ||15||

ਅੰਧੇ ਕੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਦਸਿਐ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Andhhae Kai Raahi Dhasiai Andhhaa Hoe S Jaae ||
अंधे कै राहि दसिऐ अंधा होइ सु जाइ ॥
He is truly blind, who follows the way shown by the blind man.
ਹੋਇ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
Hoe Sujaakhaa Naanakaa So Kio Oujharr Paae ||
होइ सुजाखा नानका सो किउ उझड़ि पाइ ॥
O Nanak, why should the one who can see, get lost?
ਅੰਧੇ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਜਿਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਲੋਇਣ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
Andhhae Eaehi N Aakheean Jin Mukh Loein Naahi ||
अंधे एहि न आखीअनि जिन मुखि लोइण नाहि ॥
Do not call them blind, who have no eyes in their face.
ਅੰਧੇ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਘੁਥੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

अंधे सेई नानका खसमहु घुथे जाहि ॥१॥
They alone are blind, O Nanak, who wander away from their Lord and Master. ||1||

ਸਾਹਿਬਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਜੋ ਕੀਆ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

साहिबि अंधा जो कीआ करे सुजाखा होइ ॥
One whom the Lord has made blind - the Lord can make him see again.
ਜੇਹਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਹੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਆਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Jaehaa Jaanai Thaeho Varathai Jae So Aakhai Koe ||
जेहा जाणै तेहो वरतै जे सउ आखै कोइ ॥
He acts only as he knows, although he may be spoken to a hundred times.
ਜਿਥੈ ਸੁ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤਉ ਜਾਣਿ ॥
Jithhai S Vasath N Jaapee Aapae Varatho Jaan ||
जिथै सु वसतु न जापई आपे वरतउ जाणि ॥
Where the real thing is not seen, self-conceit prevails there - know this well.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਕਿਉ ਲਏ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ॥੨॥
Naanak Gaahak Kio Leae Sakai N Vasath Pashhaan ||2||
नानक गाहकु किउ लए सकै न वसतु पछाणि ॥२॥
O Nanak, how can the purshaser purchase the real thing, if he cannot recognize it? ||2||

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਧਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿ ਹੁਕਮਹੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
So Kio Andhhaa Aakheeai J Hukamahu Andhhaa Hoe ||
सो किउ अंधा आखीऐ जि हुकमहु अंधा होइ ॥
How can someone be called blind, if he was made blind by the Lord's Command?
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
Naanak Hukam N Bujhee Andhhaa Keheeai Soe ||3||
नानक हुकमु न बुझई अंधा कहीऐ सोइ ॥३॥
O Nanak, one who does not understand the Hukam of the Lord's Command should be called blind. ||3||
