ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਸਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
Jin Naam Dheeaa This Saevasaa This Balihaarai Jaao ||
जिनि नामु दीआ तिसु सेवसा तिसु बलिहारै जाउ ॥
I serve the One who gave me the Naam; I am a sacrifice to Him.
ਜੋ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਢਾਹਸੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
Jo Ousaarae So Dtaahasee This Bin Avar N Koe ||
जो उसारे सो ढाहसी तिसु बिनु अवरु न कोइ ॥
He who builds, also demolishes; there is no other than Him.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਲਾ ਤਾ ਤਨਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੧॥
Gur Parasaadhee This Sanmhalaa Thaa Than Dhookh N Hoe ||31||
गुर परसादी तिसु सम्हला ता तनि दूखु न होइ ॥३१॥
By Guru's Grace, I contemplate Him, and then my body does not suffer in pain. ||31||
ਣਾ ਕੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਗਹੀ ਣਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਆ ਨ ਹੋਗੁ ॥
Naa Ko Maeraa Kis Gehee Naa Ko Hoaa N Hog ||
णा को मेरा किसु गही णा को होआ न होगु ॥
No one is mine - whose gown should I grasp and hold? No one ever was, and no one shall ever be mine.
ਆਵਣਿ ਜਾਣਿ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਰੋਗੁ ॥
Aavan Jaan Vigucheeai Dhubidhhaa Viaapai Rog ||
आवणि जाणि विगुचीऐ दुबिधा विआपै रोगु ॥
Coming and going, one is ruined, afflicted with the disease of dual-mindedness.
ਣਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਕਲਰ ਕੰਧ ਗਿਰੰਤਿ ॥
Naam Vihoonae Aadhamee Kalar Kandhh Giranth ||
णाम विहूणे आदमी कलर कंध गिरंति ॥
Those beings who lack the Naam, the Name of the Lord, collapse like pillars of salt.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਜਾਇ ਰਸਾਤਲਿ ਅੰਤਿ ॥
Vin Naavai Kio Shhootteeai Jaae Rasaathal Anth ||
विणु नावै किउ छूटीऐ जाइ रसातलि अंति ॥
Without the Name, how can they find release? They fall into hell in the end.
ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਵੈ ਅਖਰੀ ਅਗਣਤੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
Ganath Ganaavai Akharee Aganath Saachaa Soe ||
गणत गणावै अखरी अगणतु साचा सोइ ॥
Using a limited number of words, we describe the unlimited True Lord.
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਤਿਹੀਣੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
Agiaanee Mathiheen Hai Gur Bin Giaan N Hoe ||
अगिआनी मतिहीणु है गुर बिनु गिआनु न होइ ॥
The ignorant lack understanding. Without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom.
ਤੂਟੀ ਤੰਤੁ ਰਬਾਬ ਕੀ ਵਾਜੈ ਨਹੀ ਵਿਜੋਗਿ ॥
Thoottee Thanth Rabaab Kee Vaajai Nehee Vijog ||
तूटी तंतु रबाब की वाजै नही विजोगि ॥
The separated soul is like the broken string of a guitar, which does not vibrate its sound.
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥੩੨॥
Vishhurriaa Maelai Prabhoo Naanak Kar Sanjog ||32||
विछुड़िआ मेलै प्रभू नानक करि संजोग ॥३२॥
God unites the separated souls with Himself, awakening their destiny. ||32||
ਤਰਵਰੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਪੰਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਰਵਰਿ ਪੰਖੀ ਪੰਚ ॥
Tharavar Kaaeiaa Pankh Man Tharavar Pankhee Panch ||
तरवरु काइआ पंखि मनु तरवरि पंखी पंच ॥
The body is the tree, and the mind is the bird; the birds in the tree are the five senses.
ਤਤੁ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕਸੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਫਾਸ ਨ ਰੰਚ ॥
Thath Chugehi Mil Eaekasae Thin Ko Faas N Ranch ||
ततु चुगहि मिलि एकसे तिन कउ फास न रंच ॥
They peck at the essence of reality, and merge with the One Lord. They are never trapped at all.
ਉਡਹਿ ਤ ਬੇਗੁਲ ਬੇਗੁਲੇ ਤਾਕਹਿ ਚੋਗ ਘਣੀ ॥
Ouddehi Th Baegul Baegulae Thaakehi Chog Ghanee ||
उडहि त बेगुल बेगुले ताकहि चोग घणी ॥
But the others fly away in a hurry, when they see the food.
ਪੰਖ ਤੁਟੇ ਫਾਹੀ ਪੜੀ ਅਵਗੁਣਿ ਭੀੜ ਬਣੀ ॥
Pankh Thuttae Faahee Parree Avagun Bheerr Banee ||
पंख तुटे फाही पड़ी अवगुणि भीड़ बणी ॥
Their feathers are clipped, and they are caught in the noose; through their mistakes, they are caught in disaster.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਣੀ ॥
Bin Saachae Kio Shhootteeai Har Gun Karam Manee ||
बिनु साचे किउ छूटीऐ हरि गुण करमि मणी ॥
Without the True Lord, how can anyone find release? The jewel of the Lord's Glorious Praises comes by the karma of good actions.
ਆਪਿ ਛਡਾਏ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਵਡਾ ਆਪਿ ਧਣੀ ॥
Aap Shhaddaaeae Shhootteeai Vaddaa Aap Dhhanee ||
आपि छडाए छूटीऐ वडा आपि धणी ॥
When He Himself releases them, only then are they released. He Himself is the Great Master.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Gur Parasaadhee Shhootteeai Kirapaa Aap Karaee ||
गुर परसादी छूटीऐ किरपा आपि करेइ ॥
By Guru's Grace, they are released, when He Himself grants His Grace.
ਅਪਣੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਵਡਾਈਆ ਜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੈ ਦੇਇ ॥੩੩॥
Apanai Haathh Vaddaaeeaa Jai Bhaavai Thai Dhaee ||33||
अपणै हाथि वडाईआ जै भावै तै देइ ॥३३॥
Glorious greatness rests in His Hands. He blesses those with whom He is pleased. ||33||
ਥਰ ਥਰ ਕੰਪੈ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਥਾਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
Thhar Thhar Kanpai Jeearraa Thhaan Vihoonaa Hoe ||
थर थर क्मपै जीअड़ा थान विहूणा होइ ॥
The soul trembles and shakes, when it loses its mooring and support.
ਥਾਨਿ ਮਾਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਕਾਜੁ ਨ ਫੀਟੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Thhaan Maan Sach Eaek Hai Kaaj N Feettai Koe ||
थानि मानि सचु एकु है काजु न फीटै कोइ ॥
Only the support of the True Lord brings honor and glory. Through it, one's works are never in vain.
ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਥਿਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Thhir Naaraaein Thhir Guroo Thhir Saachaa Beechaar ||
थिरु नाराइणु थिरु गुरू थिरु साचा बीचारु ॥
The Lord is eternal and forever stable; the Guru is stable, and contemplation upon the True Lord is stable.
ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥੁ ਤੂ ਨਿਧਾਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
Sur Nar Naathheh Naathh Thoo Nidhhaaraa Aadhhaar ||
सुरि नर नाथह नाथु तू निधारा आधारु ॥
O Lord and Master of angels, men and Yogic masters, You are the support of the unsupported.
ਸਰਬੇ ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰੀ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥
Sarabae Thhaan Thhanantharee Thoo Dhaathaa Dhaathaar ||
सरबे थान थनंतरी तू दाता दातारु ॥
In all places and interspaces, You are the Giver, the Great Giver.
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
Jeh Dhaekhaa Theh Eaek Thoo Anth N Paaraavaar ||
जह देखा तह एकु तू अंतु न पारावारु ॥
Wherever I look, there I see You, Lord; You have no end or limitation.
ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
Thhaan Thhananthar Rav Rehiaa Gur Sabadhee Veechaar ||
थान थनंतरि रवि रहिआ गुर सबदी वीचारि ॥
You are pervading and permeating the places and interspaces; reflecting upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad, You are found.
ਅਣਮੰਗਿਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਵਸੀ ਵਡਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੩੪॥
Anamangiaa Dhaan Dhaevasee Vaddaa Agam Apaar ||34||
अणमंगिआ दानु देवसी वडा अगम अपारु ॥३४॥
You give gifts even when they are not asked for; You are great, inaccessible and infinite. ||34||
ਦਇਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤੂ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
Dhaeiaa Dhaan Dhaeiaal Thoo Kar Kar Dhaekhanehaar ||
दइआ दानु दइआलु तू करि करि देखणहारु ॥
O Merciful Lord, You are the embodiment of mercy; creating the Creation, You behold it.
ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰਿ ॥
Dhaeiaa Karehi Prabh Mael Laihi Khin Mehi Dtaahi Ousaar ||
दइआ करहि प्रभ मेलि लैहि खिन महि ढाहि उसारि ॥
Please shower Your Mercy upon me, O God, and unite me with Yourself. In an instant, You destroy and rebuild.
ਦਾਨਾ ਤੂ ਬੀਨਾ ਤੁਹੀ ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
Dhaanaa Thoo Beenaa Thuhee Dhaanaa Kai Sir Dhaan ||
दाना तू बीना तुही दाना कै सिरि दानु ॥
You are all-wise and all-seeing; You are the Greatest Giver of all givers.
ਦਾਲਦ ਭੰਜਨ ਦੁਖ ਦਲਣ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੩੫॥
Dhaaladh Bhanjan Dhukh Dhalan Guramukh Giaan Dhhiaan ||35||
दालद भंजन दुख दलण गुरमुखि गिआनु धिआनु ॥३५॥
He is the Eradicator of poverty, and the Destroyer of pain; the Gurmukh realizes spiritual wisdom and meditation. ||35||
ਧਨਿ ਗਇਐ ਬਹਿ ਝੂਰੀਐ ਧਨ ਮਹਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਗਵਾਰ ॥
Dhhan Gaeiai Behi Jhooreeai Dhhan Mehi Cheeth Gavaar ||
धनि गइऐ बहि झूरीऐ धन महि चीतु गवार ॥
Losing his wealth, he cries out in anguish; the fool's consciousness is engrossed in wealth.
ਧਨੁ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਚਿਆ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
Dhhan Viralee Sach Sanchiaa Niramal Naam Piaar ||
धनु विरली सचु संचिआ निरमलु नामु पिआरि ॥
How rare are those who gather the wealth of Truth, and love the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਧਨੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਾ ਜਾਣ ਦੇਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਏਕ ॥
Dhhan Gaeiaa Thaa Jaan Dhaehi Jae Raachehi Rang Eaek ||
धनु गइआ ता जाण देहि जे राचहि रंगि एक ॥
If by losing your wealth, you may become absorbed in the Love of the One Lord, then just let it go.
ਮਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਿਰੁ ਸਉਪੀਐ ਭੀ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ॥
Man Dheejai Sir Soupeeai Bhee Karathae Kee Ttaek ||
मनु दीजै सिरु सउपीऐ भी करते की टेक ॥
Dedicate your mind, and surrender your head; seek only the Support of the Creator Lord.
ਧੰਧਾ ਧਾਵਤ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ॥
Dhhandhhaa Dhhaavath Rehi Geae Man Mehi Sabadh Anandh ||
धंधा धावत रहि गए मन महि सबदु अनंदु ॥
Worldly affairs and wanderings cease, when the mind is filled with the bliss of the Shabad.
ਦੁਰਜਨ ਤੇ ਸਾਜਨ ਭਏ ਭੇਟੇ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ॥
Dhurajan Thae Saajan Bheae Bhaettae Gur Govindh ||
दुरजन ते साजन भए भेटे गुर गोविंद ॥
Even one's enemies become friends, meeting with the Guru, the Lord of the Universe.
ਬਨੁ ਬਨੁ ਫਿਰਤੀ ਢੂਢਤੀ ਬਸਤੁ ਰਹੀ ਘਰਿ ਬਾਰਿ ॥
Ban Ban Firathee Dtoodtathee Basath Rehee Ghar Baar ||
बनु बनु फिरती ढूढती बसतु रही घरि बारि ॥
Wandering from forest to forest searching, you will find that those things are within the home of your own heart.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੀ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥੩੬॥
Sathigur Maelee Mil Rehee Janam Maran Dhukh Nivaar ||36||
सतिगुरि मेली मिलि रही जनम मरण दुखु निवारि ॥३६॥
United by the True Guru, you shall remain united, and the pains of birth and death will be ended. ||36||
ਨਾਨਾ ਕਰਤ ਨ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
Naanaa Karath N Shhootteeai Vin Gun Jam Pur Jaahi ||
नाना करत न छूटीऐ विणु गुण जम पुरि जाहि ॥
Through various rituals, one does not find release. Without virtue, one is sent to the City of Death.
ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਏਹੁ ਨ ਓਹੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਗੁਣਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ॥
Naa This Eaehu N Ouhu Hai Avagun Fir Pashhuthaahi ||
ना तिसु एहु न ओहु है अवगुणि फिरि पछुताहि ॥
One will not have this world or the next; committing sinful mistakes, one comes to regret and repent in the end.
