ਤਿਸੁ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਜਰਾ ਨ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

तिसु पाखंडी जरा न मरणा ॥
Such a Paakhandi does not grow old or die.
ਬੋਲੈ ਚਰਪਟੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

बोलै चरपटु सति सरूपु ॥
Says Charpat, God is the embodiment of Truth;

First Mehl:
ਸੋ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਜਿ ਉਲਟੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥
So Bairaagee J Oulattae Breham ||
सो बैरागी जि उलटे ब्रहमु ॥
He alone is a Bairaagi, who turns himself toward God.
ਗਗਨ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਰੋਪੈ ਥੰਮੁ ॥
Gagan Manddal Mehi Ropai Thhanm ||
गगन मंडल महि रोपै थमु ॥
In the Tenth Gate, the sky of the mind, he erects his pillar.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਹੈ ਧਿਆਨਿ ॥
Ahinis Anthar Rehai Dhhiaan ||
अहिनिसि अंतरि रहै धिआनि ॥
Night and day, he remains in deep inner meditation.
ਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਤ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥
Thae Bairaagee Sath Samaan ||
ते बैरागी सत समानि ॥
Such a Bairaagi is just like the True Lord.
ਬੋਲੈ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

Kio Marai Mandhaa Kio Jeevai Jugath ||
किउ मरै मंदा किउ जीवै जुगति ॥
How is evil eradicated? How can the true way of life be found?
ਕੰਨ ਪੜਾਇ ਕਿਆ ਖਾਜੈ ਭੁਗਤਿ ॥
Kann Parraae Kiaa Khaajai Bhugath ||
कंन पड़ाइ किआ खाजै भुगति ॥
What is the use of piercing the ears, or begging for food?
ਆਸਤਿ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
Aasath Naasath Eaeko Naao ||
आसति नासति एको नाउ ॥
Throughout existence and non-existence, there is only the Name of the One Lord.
ਕਉਣੁ ਸੁ ਅਖਰੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਹਿਆਉ ॥

कउणु सु अखरु जितु रहै हिआउ ॥
What is that Word, which holds the heart in its place?
ਧੂਪ ਛਾਵ ਜੇ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਸਹੈ ॥

धूप छाव जे सम करि सहै ॥
When you look alike upon sunshine and shade,
ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥
Thaa Naanak Aakhai Gur Ko Kehai ||
ता नानकु आखै गुरु को कहै ॥
Says Nanak, then the Guru will speak to you.
ਛਿਅ ਵਰਤਾਰੇ ਵਰਤਹਿ ਪੂਤ ॥
Shhia Varathaarae Varathehi Pooth ||
छिअ वरतारे वरतहि पूत ॥
The students follow the six systems.
ਨਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਨਾ ਅਉਧੂਤ ॥
Naa Sansaaree Naa Aoudhhooth ||
ना संसारी ना अउधूत ॥
They are neither worldly people, nor detached renunciates.
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਿ ਜੋ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Nirankaar Jo Rehai Samaae ||
निरंकारि जो रहै समाइ ॥
One who remains absorbed in the Formless Lord
ਕਾਹੇ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਮੰਗਣਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
Kaahae Bheekhiaa Mangan Jaae ||7||
काहे भीखिआ मंगणि जाइ ॥७॥
- why should he go out begging? ||7||

Pauree:
ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸੋਈ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
Har Mandhar Soee Aakheeai Jithhahu Har Jaathaa ||
हरि मंदरु सोई आखीऐ जिथहु हरि जाता ॥
That alone is said to be the Lord's temple, where the Lord is known.
ਮਾਨਸ ਦੇਹ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
Maanas Dhaeh Gur Bachanee Paaeiaa Sabh Aatham Raam Pashhaathaa ||
मानस देह गुर बचनी पाइआ सभु आतम रामु पछाता ॥
In the human body, the Guru's Word is found, when one understands that the Lord, the Supreme Soul, is in all.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਖੋਜੀਐ ਘਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥
Baahar Mool N Khojeeai Ghar Maahi Bidhhaathaa ||
बाहरि मूलि न खोजीऐ घर माहि बिधाता ॥
Don't look for Him outside your self. The Creator, the Architect of Destiny, is within the home of your own heart.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਤਿਨੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਤਾ ॥
Manamukh Har Mandhar Kee Saar N Jaananee Thinee Janam Gavaathaa ||
मनमुख हरि मंदर की सार न जाणनी तिनी जनमु गवाता ॥
The self-willed manmukh does not appreciate the value of the Lord's temple; they waste away and lose their lives.
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੨॥
Sabh Mehi Eik Varathadhaa Gur Sabadhee Paaeiaa Jaaee ||12||
सभ महि इकु वरतदा गुर सबदी पाइआ जाई ॥१२॥
The One Lord is pervading in all; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He can be found. ||12||

ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਸੁਣੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਾ ਕਹਣਾ ॥
Moorakh Hovai So Sunai Moorakh Kaa Kehanaa ||
मूरखु होवै सो सुणै मूरख का कहणा ॥
Only a fool listens to the words of the fool.
ਮੂਰਖ ਕੇ ਕਿਆ ਲਖਣ ਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਾ ਕਰਣਾ ॥
Moorakh Kae Kiaa Lakhan Hai Kiaa Moorakh Kaa Karanaa ||
मूरख के किआ लखण है किआ मूरख का करणा ॥
What are the signs of the fool? What does the fool do?
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਓਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਹੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੇ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

मूरखु ओहु जि मुगधु है अहंकारे मरणा ॥
A fool is stupid; he dies of egotism.
ਏਤੁ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਣਾ ॥
Eaeth Kamaanai Sadhaa Dhukh Dhukh Hee Mehi Rehanaa ||
एतु कमाणै सदा दुखु दुख ही महि रहणा ॥
His actions always bring him pain; he lives in pain.
ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪਵੈ ਖੂਹਿ ਕਿਹੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਰਣਾ ॥
Ath Piaaraa Pavai Khoohi Kihu Sanjam Karanaa ||
अति पिआरा पवै खूहि किहु संजमु करणा ॥
If someone's beloved friend falls into the pit, what can be used to pull him out?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਓਸੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਰਹਣਾ ॥
Guramukh Hoe S Karae Veechaar Ous Alipatho Rehanaa ||
गुरमुखि होइ सु करे वीचारु ओसु अलिपतो रहणा ॥
One who becomes Gurmukh contemplates the Lord, and remains detached.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਆਪਿ ਉਧਰੈ ਓਸੁ ਪਿਛੈ ਡੁਬਦੇ ਭੀ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
Har Naam Japai Aap Oudhharai Ous Pishhai Ddubadhae Bhee Tharanaa ||
हरि नामु जपै आपि उधरै ओसु पिछै डुबदे भी तरणा ॥
Chanting the Lord's Name, he saves himself, and he carries across those who are drowning as well.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਦੇਇ ਸੁ ਸਹਣਾ ॥੧॥
Naanak Jo This Bhaavai So Karae Jo Dhaee S Sehanaa ||1||
नानक जो तिसु भावै सो करे जो देइ सु सहणा ॥१॥
O Nanak, he acts in accordance with the Will of God; he endures whatever he is given. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਸਿਖ ਸਹੀ ॥

नानकु आखै रे मना सुणीऐ सिख सही ॥
Says Nanak, listen, O mind, to the True Teachings.
ਲੇਖਾ ਰਬੁ ਮੰਗੇਸੀਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਕਢਿ ਵਹੀ ॥
Laekhaa Rab Mangaeseeaa Baithaa Kadt Vehee ||
लेखा रबु मंगेसीआ बैठा कढि वही ॥
Opening His ledger, God will call you to account.
ਤਲਬਾ ਪਉਸਨਿ ਆਕੀਆ ਬਾਕੀ ਜਿਨਾ ਰਹੀ ॥
Thalabaa Pousan Aakeeaa Baakee Jinaa Rehee ||
तलबा पउसनि आकीआ बाकी जिना रही ॥
Those rebels who have unpaid accounts shall be called out.
ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਹੋਸੀ ਆਇ ਤਈ ॥
Ajaraaeel Faraesathaa Hosee Aae Thee ||
अजराईलु फरेसता होसी आइ तई ॥
Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, shall be appointed to punish them.
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਭੀੜੀ ਗਲੀ ਫਹੀ ॥
Aavan Jaan N Sujhee Bheerree Galee Fehee ||
आवणु जाणु न सुझई भीड़ी गली फही ॥
They will find no way to escape coming and going in reincarnation; they are trapped in the narrow path.
ਕੂੜ ਨਿਖੁਟੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਓੜਕਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੀ ॥੨॥
Koorr Nikhuttae Naanakaa Ourrak Sach Rehee ||2||
कूड़ निखुटे नानका ओड़कि सचि रही ॥२॥
Falsehood will come to an end, O Nanak, and Truth will prevail in the end. ||2||

Har Kaa Sabh Sareer Hai Har Rav Rehiaa Sabh Aapai ||
हरि का सभु सरीरु है हरि रवि रहिआ सभु आपै ॥
The body and everything belongs to the Lord; the Lord Himself is all-pervading.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
Har Kee Keemath N Pavai Kishh Kehan N Jaapai ||
हरि की कीमति ना पवै किछु कहणु न जापै ॥
The Lord's value cannot be estimated; nothing can be said about it.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਪੈ ॥
Gur Parasaadhee Saalaaheeai Har Bhagathee Raapai ||
गुर परसादी सालाहीऐ हरि भगती रापै ॥
By Guru's Grace, one praises the Lord, imbued with feelings of devotion.
ਸਭੁ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਗਵਾਪੈ ॥
Sabh Man Than Hariaa Hoeiaa Ahankaar Gavaapai ||
सभु मनु तनु हरिआ होइआ अहंकारु गवापै ॥
The mind and body are totally rejuvenated, and egotism is eradicated.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧੩॥
Sabh Kishh Har Kaa Khael Hai Guramukh Kisai Bujhaaee ||13||
सभु किछु हरि का खेलु है गुरमुखि किसै बुझाई ॥१३॥
Everything is the play of the Lord. The Gurmukh understands this. ||13||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਸਹੰਸਰ ਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੁ ਰੋਆਇਆ ॥
Sehansar Dhaan Dhae Eindhra Roaaeiaa ||
सहंसर दान दे इंद्रु रोआइआ ॥
Branded with a thousand marks of disgrace, Indra cried in shame.
ਪਰਸ ਰਾਮੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
Paras Raam Rovai Ghar Aaeiaa ||
परस रामु रोवै घरि आइआ ॥
Paras Raam returned home crying.
ਅਜੈ ਸੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥
Ajai S Rovai Bheekhiaa Khaae ||
अजै सु रोवै भीखिआ खाइ ॥
Ajai cried and wept, when he was made to eat the manure he had given, pretending it was charity.
ਐਸੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
Aisee Dharageh Milai Sajaae ||
ऐसी दरगह मिलै सजाइ ॥
Such is the punishment received in the Court of the Lord.
ਰੋਵੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਿਕਾਲਾ ਭਇਆ ॥
Rovai Raam Nikaalaa Bhaeiaa ||
रोवै रामु निकाला भइआ ॥
