ਰਾਜਸੁ ਸਾਤਕੁ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਡਰਪਹਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਰੂਪ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
Raajas Saathak Thaamas Ddarapehi Kaethae Roop Oupaaeiaa ||
राजसु सातकु तामसु डरपहि केते रूप उपाइआ ॥
Those who embody the energies of sattva-white light, raajas-red passion, and taamas-black darkness, abide in the Fear of God, along with the many created forms.
ਛਲ ਬਪੁਰੀ ਇਹ ਕਉਲਾ ਡਰਪੈ ਅਤਿ ਡਰਪੈ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
Shhal Bapuree Eih Koulaa Ddarapai Ath Ddarapai Dhharam Raaeiaa ||3||
छल बपुरी इह कउला डरपै अति डरपै धरम राइआ ॥३॥
This miserable deceiver Maya abides in the Fear of God; the Righteous Judge of Dharma is utterly afraid of Him as well. ||3||
ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਡਰਹਿ ਬਿਆਪੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਡਰ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰਾ ॥
Sagal Samagree Ddarehi Biaapee Bin Ddar Karanaihaaraa ||
सगल समग्री डरहि बिआपी बिनु डर करणैहारा ॥
The entire expanse of the Universe is in the Fear of God; only the Creator Lord is without this Fear.

Paanch Barakh Ko Anaathh Dhhroo Baarik Har Simarath Amar Attaarae ||
पांच बरख को अनाथु ध्रू बारिकु हरि सिमरत अमर अटारे ॥
The five year old orphan boy Dhroo, by meditating in remembrance on the Lord, became stationary and permanent.
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਹੇਤਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹਿਓ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
Puthr Haeth Naaraaein Kehiou Jamakankar Maar Bidhaarae ||1||
पुत्र हेति नाराइणु कहिओ जमकंकर मारि बिदारे ॥१॥
For the sake of his son, Ajaamal called out, ""O Lord, Naaraayan"", who struck down and killed the Messenger of Death. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇਤੇ ਅਗਨਤ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥

मेरे ठाकुर केते अगनत उधारे ॥
My Lord and Master has saved many, countless beings.

मोहि दीन अलप मति निरगुण परिओ सरणि दुआरे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
I am meek, with little or no understanding, and unworthy; I seek protection at the Lord's Door. ||1||Pause||
ਬਾਲਮੀਕੁ ਸੁਪਚਾਰੋ ਤਰਿਓ ਬਧਿਕ ਤਰੇ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ॥
Baalameek Supachaaro Thariou Badhhik Tharae Bichaarae ||
बालमीकु सुपचारो तरिओ बधिक तरे बिचारे ॥
Baalmeek the outcaste was saved, and the poor hunter was saved as well.
ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਅਰਾਧਿਓ ਗਜਪਤਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
Eaek Nimakh Man Maahi Araadhhiou Gajapath Paar Outhaarae ||2||
एक निमख मन माहि अराधिओ गजपति पारि उतारे ॥२॥
The elephant remembered the Lord in his mind for an instant, and so was carried across. ||2||
ਕੀਨੀ ਰਖਿਆ ਭਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੈ ਹਰਨਾਖਸ ਨਖਹਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥
Keenee Rakhiaa Bhagath Prehilaadhai Haranaakhas Nakhehi Bidhaarae ||
कीनी रखिआ भगत प्रहिलादै हरनाखस नखहि बिदारे ॥
He saved His devotee Prahlaad, and tore Harnaakhash with his nails.
ਬਿਦਰੁ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਤੁ ਭਇਓ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਉਜਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
Bidhar Dhaasee Suth Bhaeiou Puneethaa Sagalae Kul Oujaarae ||3||
बिदरु दासी सुतु भइओ पुनीता सगले कुल उजारे ॥३॥
Bidar, the son of a slave-girl, was purified, and all his generations were redeemed. ||3||
ਕਵਨ ਪਰਾਧ ਬਤਾਵਉ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨਾਰੇ ॥
Kavan Paraadhh Bathaavo Apunae Mithhiaa Moh Maganaarae ||
कवन पराध बतावउ अपुने मिथिआ मोह मगनारे ॥
What sins of mine should I speak of? I am intoxicated with false emotional attachment.
ਆਇਓ ਸਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਟ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਭੁਜਾ ਪਸਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੨॥

आइओ साम नानक ओट हरि की लीजै भुजा पसारे ॥४॥२॥
Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of the Lord; please, reach out and take me into Your embrace. ||4||2||

Vith Navith Bhramiou Bahu Bhaathee Anik Jathan Kar Dhhaaeae ||
वित नवित भ्रमिओ बहु भाती अनिक जतन करि धाए ॥
For the sake of riches, I wandered around in so many ways; I rushed around, making all sorts of efforts.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਏ ਹਉ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਅਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
Jo Jo Karam Keeeae Ho Houmai Thae Thae Bheae Ajaaeae ||1||
जो जो करम कीए हउ हउमै ते ते भए अजाए ॥१॥
The deeds I did in egotism and pride, have all been done in vain. ||1||
ਅਵਰ ਦਿਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਕਾਜ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥
Avar Dhin Kaahoo Kaaj N Laaeae ||
अवर दिन काहू काज न लाए ॥
Other days are of no use to me;
ਸੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਉ ਜਾ ਦਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
So Dhin Mo Ko Dheejai Prabh Jeeo Jaa Dhin Har Jas Gaaeae ||1|| Rehaao ||
सो दिनु मो कउ दीजै प्रभ जीउ जा दिन हरि जसु गाए ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Please bless me with those days, O Dear God, on which I may sing the Lord's Praises. ||1||Pause||
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਇਸ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਝਾਏ ॥
Puthr Kalathr Grih Dhaekh Pasaaraa Eis Hee Mehi Ourajhaaeae ||
पुत्र कलत्र ग्रिह देखि पसारा इस ही महि उरझाए ॥
Gazing upon children, spouse, household and possessions, one is entangled in these.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਚਾਖਿ ਭਏ ਉਦਮਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਗਾਏ ॥੨॥
Maaeiaa Madh Chaakh Bheae Oudhamaathae Har Har Kabahu N Gaaeae ||2||
माइआ मद चाखि भए उदमाते हरि हरि कबहु न गाए ॥२॥
Tasting the wine of Maya, one is intoxicated, and never sings of the Lord, Har, Har. ||2||
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਖੋਜੀ ਬਹੁ ਪਰਕਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਤਨ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
Eih Bidhh Khojee Bahu Parakaaraa Bin Santhan Nehee Paaeae ||
इह बिधि खोजी बहु परकारा बिनु संतन नही पाए ॥
In this way, I have examined lots of methods, but without the Saints, it is not found.
ਤੁਮ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਵਡੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਮਾਗਨ ਕਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਆਏ ॥੩॥
Thum Dhaathaar Vaddae Prabh Sanmrathh Maagan Ko Dhaan Aaeae ||3||
तुम दातार वडे प्रभ सम्रथ मागन कउ दानु आए ॥३॥
You are the Great Giver, the great and almighty God; I have come to beg a gift from You. ||3||
ਤਿਆਗਿਓ ਸਗਲਾ ਮਾਨੁ ਮਹਤਾ ਦਾਸ ਰੇਣ ਸਰਣਾਏ ॥
Thiaagiou Sagalaa Maan Mehathaa Dhaas Raen Saranaaeae ||
तिआगिओ सगला मानु महता दास रेण सरणाए ॥
Abandoning all pride and self-importance, I have sought the Sanctuary of the dust of the feet of the Lord's slave.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਏ ਏਕੈ ਮਹਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੩॥

कहु नानक हरि मिलि भए एकै महा अनंद सुख पाए ॥४॥३॥
Says Nanak, meeting with the Lord, I have become one with Him; I have found supreme bliss and peace. ||4||3||

कवन थान धीरिओ है नामा कवन बसतु अहंकारा ॥
In what place is the Name established? Where does egotism dwell?
ਕਵਨ ਚਿਹਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਛੋਹਿਓ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਗਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
Kavan Chihan Sun Oopar Shhohiou Mukh Thae Sun Kar Gaaraa ||1||
कवन चिहन सुनि ऊपरि छोहिओ मुख ते सुनि करि गारा ॥१॥
What injury have you suffered, listening to abuse from someone else's mouth? ||1||
ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਤੂ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਇਓ ॥
Sunahu Rae Thoo Koun Kehaa Thae Aaeiou ||
सुनहु रे तू कउनु कहा ते आइओ ॥
Listen: who are you, and where did you come from?
ਏਤੀ ਨ ਜਾਨਉ ਕੇਤੀਕ ਮੁਦਤਿ ਚਲਤੇ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

एती न जानउ केतीक मुदति चलते खबरि न पाइओ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
You don't even know how long you will stay here; you have no hint of when you shall leave. ||1||Pause||
ਸਹਨ ਸੀਲ ਪਵਨ ਅਰੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਖਿਮਾ ਨਿਭਰਾਤੇ ॥
Sehan Seel Pavan Ar Paanee Basudhhaa Khimaa Nibharaathae ||
सहन सील पवन अरु पाणी बसुधा खिमा निभराते ॥
Wind and water have patience and tolerance; the earth has compassion and forgiveness, no doubt.
ਪੰਚ ਤਤ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਇਓ ਸੰਜੋਗਾ ਇਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਵਨ ਦੁਰਾਤੇ ॥੨॥
Panch Thath Mil Bhaeiou Sanjogaa Ein Mehi Kavan Dhuraathae ||2||
पंच तत मिलि भइओ संजोगा इन महि कवन दुराते ॥२॥
The union of the five tattvas - the five elements - has brought you into being. Which of these is evil? ||2||
ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਬਿਧਾਤੈ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਈ ॥
Jin Rach Rachiaa Purakh Bidhhaathai Naalae Houmai Paaee ||
जिनि रचि रचिआ पुरखि बिधातै नाले हउमै पाई ॥
The Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny, formed your form; He also burdened you with egotism.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੁ ਉਸ ਹੀ ਕਉ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਓਹਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
Janam Maran Ous Hee Ko Hai Rae Ouhaa Aavai Jaaee ||3||
जनम मरणु उस ही कउ है रे ओहा आवै जाई ॥३॥
He alone is born and dies; He alone comes and goes. ||3||
ਬਰਨੁ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਰਚਨਾ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
Baran Chihan Naahee Kishh Rachanaa Mithhiaa Sagal Pasaaraa ||
बरनु चिहनु नाही किछु रचना मिथिआ सगल पसारा ॥
Nothing of the color and the form of the creation shall remain; the entire expanse is transitory.
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਬ ਖੇਲੁ ਉਝਾਰੈ ਤਬ ਏਕੈ ਏਕੰਕਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੪॥
Bhanath Naanak Jab Khael Oujhaarai Thab Eaekai Eaekankaaraa ||4||4||
भणति नानकु जब खेलु उझारै तब एकै एकंकारा ॥४॥४॥
Prays Nanak, when He brings His play to its close, then only the One, the One Lord remains. ||4||4||
