ਤੀਰਥਿ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

तीरथि भरमसि बिआधि न जावै ॥
And wandering around at places of pilgrimage, the disease is not taken away.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
Naam Binaa Kaisae Sukh Paavai ||4||
नाम बिना कैसे सुखु पावै ॥४॥
Without the Naam, how can one find peace? ||4||
ਜਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਿਵੈ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥
Jathan Karai Bindh Kivai N Rehaaee ||
जतन करै बिंदु किवै न रहाई ॥
No matter how much he tries, he cannot control his semen and seed.
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਨਰਕੇ ਪਾਈ ॥
Manooaa Ddolai Narakae Paaee ||
मनूआ डोलै नरके पाई ॥
His mind wavers, and he falls into hell.
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧੋ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਈ ॥
Jam Pur Baadhho Lehai Sajaaee ||
जम पुरि बाधो लहै सजाई ॥
Bound and gagged in the City of Death, he is tortured.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥
Bin Naavai Jeeo Jal Bal Jaaee ||5||
बिनु नावै जीउ जलि बलि जाई ॥५॥
Without the Name, his soul cries out in agony. ||5||
ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
Sidhh Saadhhik Kaethae Mun Dhaevaa ||
सिध साधिक केते मुनि देवा ॥
The many Siddhas and seekers, silent sages and demi-gods
ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਹਿ ਭੇਵਾ ॥
Hath Nigrehi N Thripathaavehi Bhaevaa ||
हठि निग्रहि न त्रिपतावहि भेवा ॥
Cannot satisfy themselves by practicing restraint through Hatha Yoga.
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਗਹਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
Sabadh Veechaar Gehehi Gur Saevaa ||
सबदु वीचारि गहहि गुर सेवा ॥
One who contemplates the Word of the Shabad, and serves the Guru
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੬॥
Man Than Niramal Abhimaan Abhaevaa ||6||
मनि तनि निरमल अभिमान अभेवा ॥६॥
- his mind and body become immaculate, and his egotistical pride is obliterated. ||6||
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥
Karam Milai Paavai Sach Naao ||
करमि मिलै पावै सचु नाउ ॥
Blessed with Your Grace, I obtain the True Name.
ਤੁਮ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਰਹਉ ਸੁਭਾਉ ॥
Thum Saranaagath Reho Subhaao ||
तुम सरणागति रहउ सुभाउ ॥
I remain in Your Sanctuary, in loving devotion.
ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਉ ॥
Thum Thae Oupajiou Bhagathee Bhaao ||
तुम ते उपजिओ भगती भाउ ॥
Love for Your devotional worship has welled up within me.
ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੭॥
Jap Jaapo Guramukh Har Naao ||7||
जपु जापउ गुरमुखि हरि नाउ ॥७॥
As Gurmukh, I chant and meditate on the Lord's Name. ||7||
ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਜਾਇ ਮਨ ਭੀਨੈ ॥
Houmai Garab Jaae Man Bheenai ||
हउमै गरबु जाइ मन भीनै ॥
When one is rid of egotism and pride, his mind is drenched in the Lord's Love.
ਝੂਠਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਕੀਨੈ ॥
Jhooth N Paavas Paakhandd Keenai ||
झूठि न पावसि पाखंडि कीनै ॥
Practicing fraud and hypocrisy, he does not find God.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨਹੀ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਰੁ ॥
Bin Gur Sabadh Nehee Ghar Baar ||
बिनु गुर सबद नही घरु बारु ॥
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he cannot find the Lord's Door.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੬॥

जिउ आइआ तिउ जावहि बउरे जिउ जनमे तिउ मरणु भइआ ॥
As you come, so will you leave, you fool; as you were born, so will you die.
ਜਿਉ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਕੀਏ ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੧॥
Jio Ras Bhog Keeeae Thaethaa Dhukh Laagai Naam Visaar Bhavajal Paeiaa ||1||
जिउ रस भोग कीए तेता दुखु लागै नामु विसारि भवजलि पइआ ॥१॥
As you enjoy pleasures, so will you suffer pain. Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you will fall into the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਦੇਖਤ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
Than Dhhan Dhaekhath Garab Gaeiaa ||
तनु धनु देखत गरबि गइआ ॥
Gazing upon your body and wealth, you are so proud.
ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਹਿ ਕੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Kanik Kaamanee Sio Haeth Vadhhaaeihi Kee Naam Visaarehi Bharam Gaeiaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
कनिक कामनी सिउ हेतु वधाइहि की नामु विसारहि भरमि गइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Your love for gold and sexual pleasures increases; why have you forgotten the Naam, and why do you wander in doubt? ||1||Pause||
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੀਲੁ ਨ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਸਟੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
Jath Sath Sanjam Seel N Raakhiaa Praeth Pinjar Mehi Kaasatt Bhaeiaa ||
जतु सतु संजमु सीलु न राखिआ प्रेत पिंजर महि कासटु भइआ ॥
You do not practice truth, abstinence, self-discipline or humility; the ghost within your skeleton has turned to dry wood.
ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਨ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਜਇਆ ॥੨॥
Punn Dhaan Eisanaan N Sanjam Saadhhasangath Bin Baadh Jaeiaa ||2||
पुंनु दानु इसनानु न संजमु साधसंगति बिनु बादि जइआ ॥२॥
You have not practiced charity, donations, cleansing baths or austerities. Without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, your life has gone in vain. ||2||
ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਆ ॥
Laalach Laagai Naam Bisaariou Aavath Jaavath Janam Gaeiaa ||
लालचि लागै नामु बिसारिओ आवत जावत जनमु गइआ ॥
Attached to greed, you have forgotten the Naam. Coming and going, your life has been ruined.
ਜਾ ਜਮੁ ਧਾਇ ਕੇਸ ਗਹਿ ਮਾਰੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਲ ਗਇਆ ॥੩॥
Jaa Jam Dhhaae Kaes Gehi Maarai Surath Nehee Mukh Kaal Gaeiaa ||3||
जा जमु धाइ केस गहि मारै सुरति नही मुखि काल गइआ ॥३॥
When the Messenger of Death grabs you by your hair, you will be punished. You are unconscious, and have fallen into Death's mouth. ||3||
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸਰਬ ਦਇਆ ॥
Ahinis Nindhaa Thaath Paraaee Hiradhai Naam N Sarab Dhaeiaa ||
अहिनिसि निंदा ताति पराई हिरदै नामु न सरब दइआ ॥
Day and night, you jealously slander others; in your heart, you have neither the Naam, nor compassion for all.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਗਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਰਕਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੪॥
Bin Gur Sabadh N Gath Path Paavehi Raam Naam Bin Narak Gaeiaa ||4||
बिनु गुर सबद न गति पति पावहि राम नाम बिनु नरकि गइआ ॥४॥
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, you will not find salvation or honor. Without the Lord's Name, you shall go to hell. ||4||
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਵੇਸ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਟੂਆ ਜਿਉ ਮੋਹ ਪਾਪ ਮਹਿ ਗਲਤੁ ਗਇਆ ॥
Khin Mehi Vaes Karehi Nattooaa Jio Moh Paap Mehi Galath Gaeiaa ||
खिन महि वेस करहि नटूआ जिउ मोह पाप महि गलतु गइआ ॥
In an instant, you change into various costumes, like a juggler; you are entangled in emotional attachment and sin.
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਸਾਰੀ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਮਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੫॥
Eith Outh Maaeiaa Dhaekh Pasaaree Moh Maaeiaa Kai Magan Bhaeiaa ||5||
इत उत माइआ देखि पसारी मोह माइआ कै मगनु भइआ ॥५॥
You gaze here and there upon the expanse of Maya; you are intoxicated with attachment to Maya. ||5||
ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਵਿਥਾਰ ਘਨੇਰੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਪਇਆ ॥
Karehi Bikaar Vithhaar Ghanaerae Surath Sabadh Bin Bharam Paeiaa ||
करहि बिकार विथार घनेरे सुरति सबद बिनु भरमि पइआ ॥
You act in corruption, and put on ostentatious shows, but without awareness of the Shabad, you have fallen into confusion.
ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਇਆ ॥੬॥
Houmai Rog Mehaa Dhukh Laagaa Guramath Laevahu Rog Gaeiaa ||6||
हउमै रोगु महा दुखु लागा गुरमति लेवहु रोगु गइआ ॥६॥
You suffer great pain from the disease of egotism. Following the Guru's Teachings, you shall be rid of this disease. ||6||
ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਕਉ ਆਵਤ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਾਕਤ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
Sukh Sanpath Ko Aavath Dhaekhai Saakath Man Abhimaan Bhaeiaa ||
सुख स्मपति कउ आवत देखै साकत मनि अभिमानु भइआ ॥
Seeing peace and wealth come to him, the faithless cynic become proud in his mind.
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਵੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਪਇਆ ॥੭॥
Jis Kaa Eihu Than Dhhan So Fir Laevai Anthar Sehasaa Dhookh Paeiaa ||7||
जिस का इहु तनु धनु सो फिरि लेवै अंतरि सहसा दूखु पइआ ॥७॥
But He who owns this body and wealth, takes them back again, and then the mortal feels anxiety and pain deep within. ||7||
ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਮਇਆ ॥
Anth Kaal Kishh Saathh N Chaalai Jo Dheesai Sabh Thisehi Maeiaa ||
अंति कालि किछु साथि न चालै जो दीसै सभु तिसहि मइआ ॥
At the very last instant, nothing goes along with you; all is visible only by His Mercy.
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਲੈ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੮॥
Aadh Purakh Aparanpar So Prabh Har Naam Ridhai Lai Paar Paeiaa ||8||
आदि पुरखु अपर्मपरु सो प्रभु हरि नामु रिदै लै पारि पइआ ॥८॥
God is our Primal and Infinite Lord; enshrining the Lord's Name in the heart, one crosses over. ||8||
ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਸੁਣਾਵਹਿ ਭੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਅਸਰਾਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥
Mooeae Ko Rovehi Kisehi Sunaavehi Bhai Saagar Asaraal Paeiaa ||
मूए कउ रोवहि किसहि सुणावहि भै सागर असरालि पइआ ॥
You weep for the dead, but who hears you weeping? The dead have fallen to the serpent in the terrifying world-ocean.
ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ਪਰਾਲਿ ਪਇਆ ॥੯॥
Dhaekh Kuttanb Maaeiaa Grih Mandhar Saakath Janjaal Paraal Paeiaa ||9||
देखि कुट्मबु माइआ ग्रिह मंदरु साकतु जंजालि परालि पइआ ॥९॥
Gazing upon his family, wealth, household and mansions, the faithless cynic is entangled in worthless worldly affairs. ||9||
