सलोक मः ५ ॥
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਮਿਉ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
Anmrith Baanee Amio Ras Anmrith Har Kaa Naao ||
अम्रित बाणी अमिउ रसु अम्रितु हरि का नाउ ॥
The Bani of the Guru's Word is Ambrosial Nectar; its taste is sweet. The Name of the Lord is Ambrosial Nectar.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥
Man Than Hiradhai Simar Har Aath Pehar Gun Gaao ||
मनि तनि हिरदै सिमरि हरि आठ पहर गुण गाउ ॥
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord in your mind, body and heart; twenty-four hours a day, sing His Glorious Praises.
ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਹੁ ਸਚਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
Oupadhaes Sunahu Thum Gurasikhahu Sachaa Eihai Suaao ||
उपदेसु सुणहु तुम गुरसिखहु सचा इहै सुआउ ॥
Listen to these Teachings, O Sikhs of the Guru. This is the true purpose of life.
ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਇਹੁ ਭਾਉ ॥
Janam Padhaarathh Safal Hoe Man Mehi Laaeihu Bhaao ||
जनमु पदारथु सफलु होइ मन महि लाइहु भाउ ॥
This priceless human life will be made fruitful; embrace love for the Lord in your mind.
ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨਦੁ ਘਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਪਤਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Sookh Sehaj Aanadh Ghanaa Prabh Japathiaa Dhukh Jaae ||
सूख सहज आनदु घणा प्रभ जपतिआ दुखु जाइ ॥
Celestial peace and absolute bliss come when one meditates on God - suffering is dispelled.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥
Naanak Naam Japath Sukh Oopajai Dharageh Paaeeai Thhaao ||1||
नानक नामु जपत सुखु ऊपजै दरगह पाईऐ थाउ ॥१॥
O Nanak, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, peace wells up, and one obtains a place in the Court of the Lord. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥
Naanak Naam Dhhiaaeeai Gur Pooraa Math Dhaee ||
नानक नामु धिआईऐ गुरु पूरा मति देइ ॥
O Nanak, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; this is the Teaching imparted by the Perfect Guru.
ਭਾਣੈ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮੋ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਕਢਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
Bhaanai Jap Thap Sanjamo Bhaanai Hee Kadt Laee ||
भाणै जप तप संजमो भाणै ही कढि लेइ ॥
In the Lord's Will, they practice meditation, austerity and self-discipline; in the Lord's Will, they are released.
ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਭਾਣੈ ਬਖਸ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Bhaanai Jon Bhavaaeeai Bhaanai Bakhas Karaee ||
भाणै जोनि भवाईऐ भाणै बखस करेइ ॥
In the Lord's Will, they are made to wander in reincarnation; in the Lord's Will, they are forgiven.
ਭਾਣੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭੋਗੀਐ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Bhaanai Dhukh Sukh Bhogeeai Bhaanai Karam Karaee ||
भाणै दुखु सुखु भोगीऐ भाणै करम करेइ ॥
In the Lord's Will, pain and pleasure are experienced; in the Lord's Will, actions are performed.
ਭਾਣੈ ਮਿਟੀ ਸਾਜਿ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੇਇ ॥
Bhaanai Mittee Saaj Kai Bhaanai Joth Dhharaee ||
भाणै मिटी साजि कै भाणै जोति धरेइ ॥
In the Lord's Will, clay is fashioned into form; in the Lord's Will, His Light is infused into it.
ਭਾਣੈ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਾਇਦਾ ਭਾਣੈ ਮਨਹਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Bhaanai Bhog Bhogaaeidhaa Bhaanai Manehi Karaee ||
भाणै भोग भोगाइदा भाणै मनहि करेइ ॥
In the Lord's Will, enjoyments are enjoyed; in the Lord's Will, these enjoyments are denied.
ਭਾਣੈ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਉਤਾਰੇ ਭਾਣੈ ਧਰਣਿ ਪਰੇਇ ॥
Bhaanai Narak Surag Aouthaarae Bhaanai Dhharan Paraee ||
भाणै नरकि सुरगि अउतारे भाणै धरणि परेइ ॥
In the Lord's Will, they are incarnated in heaven and hell; in the Lord's Will, they fall to the ground.
ਭਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
Bhaanai Hee Jis Bhagathee Laaeae Naanak Viralae Hae ||2||
भाणै ही जिसु भगती लाए नानक विरले हे ॥२॥
In the Lord's Will, they are committed to His devotional worship and Praise; O Nanak, how rare are these! ||2||

ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣੇ ॥
Vaddiaaee Sachae Naam Kee Ho Jeevaa Sun Sunae ||
वडिआई सचे नाम की हउ जीवा सुणि सुणे ॥
Hearing, hearing of the glorious greatness of the True Name, I live.
ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਖਣੇ ॥
Pasoo Paraeth Agiaan Oudhhaarae Eik Khanae ||
पसू परेत अगिआन उधारे इक खणे ॥
Even ignorant beasts and goblins can be saved, in an instant.
ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਦਾ ਸਦ ਜਾਪੀਐ ॥
Dhinas Rain Thaeraa Naao Sadhaa Sadh Jaapeeai ||
दिनसु रैणि तेरा नाउ सदा सद जापीऐ ॥
Day and night, chant the Name, forever and ever.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਵਿਕਰਾਲ ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੀਐ ॥
Thrisanaa Bhukh Vikaraal Naae Thaerai Dhhraapeeai ||
त्रिसना भुख विकराल नाइ तेरै ध्रापीऐ ॥
The most horrible thirst and hunger is satisfied through Your Name, O Lord.
ਰੋਗੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵੰਞੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ॥
Rog Sog Dhukh Vannjai Jis Naao Man Vasai ||
रोगु सोगु दुखु वंञै जिसु नाउ मनि वसै ॥
Disease, sorrow and pain run away, when the Name dwells within the mind.
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਾਲੁ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਰਸੈ ॥
Thisehi Paraapath Laal Jo Gur Sabadhee Rasai ||
तिसहि परापति लालु जो गुर सबदी रसै ॥
He alone attains his Beloved, who loves the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਉਧਾਰਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥
Khandd Brehamandd Baeanth Oudhhaaranehaariaa ||
खंड ब्रहमंड बेअंत उधारणहारिआ ॥
The worlds and solar systems are saved by the Infinite Lord.
ਤੇਰੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥੧੨॥
Thaeree Sobhaa Thudhh Sachae Maerae Piaariaa ||12||
तेरी सोभा तुधु सचे मेरे पिआरिआ ॥१२॥
Your glory is Yours alone, O my Beloved True Lord. ||12||

Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਮੈ ਛਡਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਕਸੁੰਭੈ ਭੁਲੀ ॥
Mithra Piaaraa Naanak Jee Mai Shhadd Gavaaeiaa Rang Kasunbhai Bhulee ||
मित्रु पिआरा नानक जी मै छडि गवाइआ रंगि कसु्मभै भुली ॥
I abandoned and lost my Beloved Friend, O Nanak; I was fooled by the transitory color of the safflower, which fades away.
ਤਉ ਸਜਣ ਕੀ ਮੈ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਉਦੀ ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਢੁ ਨ ਲਹਦੀ ॥੧॥
Tho Sajan Kee Mai Keem N Poudhee Ho Thudhh Bin Adt N Lehadhee ||1||
तउ सजण की मै कीम न पउदी हउ तुधु बिनु अढु न लहदी ॥१॥
I did not know Your value, O my Friend; without You, I am not worth even half a shell. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਸਸੁ ਵਿਰਾਇਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਉ ਸਸੁਰਾ ਵਾਦੀ ਜੇਠੋ ਪਉ ਪਉ ਲੂਹੈ ॥
Sas Viraaein Naanak Jeeo Sasuraa Vaadhee Jaetho Po Po Loohai ||
ससु विराइणि नानक जीउ ससुरा वादी जेठो पउ पउ लूहै ॥
My mother-in-law is my enemy, O Nanak; my father-in-law is argumentative and my brother-in-law burns me at every step.
ਹਭੇ ਭਸੁ ਪੁਣੇਦੇ ਵਤਨੁ ਜਾ ਮੈ ਸਜਣੁ ਤੂਹੈ ॥੨॥
Habhae Bhas Punaedhae Vathan Jaa Mai Sajan Thoohai ||2||
हभे भसु पुणेदे वतनु जा मै सजणु तूहै ॥२॥
They can all just play in the dust, when You are my Friend, O Lord. ||2||

Pauree:
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਵੁਠਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਣੋ ॥
Jis Thoo Vuthaa Chith This Dharadh Nivaarano ||
जिसु तू वुठा चिति तिसु दरदु निवारणो ॥
You relieve the pains of those, within whose consciousness You dwell, O Lord.
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਵੁਠਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਹਾਰਣੋ ॥
Jis Thoo Vuthaa Chith This Kadhae N Haarano ||
जिसु तू वुठा चिति तिसु कदे न हारणो ॥
Those, within whose consciousness You dwell, never lose.
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਤਾਰਣੋ ॥
Jis Miliaa Pooraa Guroo S Sarapar Thaarano ||
जिसु मिलिआ पूरा गुरू सु सरपर तारणो ॥
One who meets the Perfect Guru will surely be saved.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ਸਚਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਣੋ ॥
Jis No Laaeae Sach This Sach Samhaalano ||
जिस नो लाए सचि तिसु सचु सम्हालणो ॥
One who is attached to Truth, contemplates Truth.
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਇਆ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਾਲਣੋ ॥
Jis Aaeiaa Hathh Nidhhaan S Rehiaa Bhaalano ||
जिसु आइआ हथि निधानु सु रहिआ भालणो ॥
One, into whose hands the treasure comes, stops searching.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਇਕੋ ਰੰਗੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਸੋ ਜਾਨਣੋ ॥
Jis No Eiko Rang Bhagath So Jaanano ||
जिस नो इको रंगु भगतु सो जानणो ॥
He alone is known as a devotee, who loves the One Lord.
ਓਹੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਚਾਰਣੋ ॥
Ouhu Sabhanaa Kee Raen Birehee Chaarano ||
ओहु सभना की रेणु बिरही चारणो ॥
He is the dust under the feet of all; he is the lover of the Lord's feet.
ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਾਰਣੋ ॥੧੩॥
Sabh Thaerae Choj Viddaan Sabh Thaeraa Kaarano ||13||
सभि तेरे चोज विडाण सभु तेरा कारणो ॥१३॥
Everything is Your wonderful play; the whole creation is Yours. ||13||

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਮੈ ਹਭ ਵਞਾਈ ਛੋੜਿਆ ਹਭੁ ਕਿਝੁ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥
Ousathath Nindhaa Naanak Jee Mai Habh Vanjaaee Shhorriaa Habh Kijh Thiaagee ||
उसतति निंदा नानक जी मै हभ वञाई छोड़िआ हभु किझु तिआगी ॥
I have totally discarded praise and slander, O Nanak; I have forsaken and abandoned everything.
ਹਭੇ ਸਾਕ ਕੂੜਾਵੇ ਡਿਠੇ ਤਉ ਪਲੈ ਤੈਡੈ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੧॥
Habhae Saak Koorraavae Ddithae Tho Palai Thaiddai Laagee ||1||
हभे साक कूड़ावे डिठे तउ पलै तैडै लागी ॥१॥
I have seen that all relationships are false, and so I have grasped hold of the hem of Your robe, Lord. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਫਿਰਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਉ ਹਉ ਫਾਵੀ ਥੀਈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਿਸਾਵਰ ਪੰਧਾ ॥
Firadhee Firadhee Naanak Jeeo Ho Faavee Thheeee Bahuth Dhisaavar Pandhhaa ||
फिरदी फिरदी नानक जीउ हउ फावी थीई बहुतु दिसावर पंधा ॥
I wandered and wandered and went crazy, O Nanak, in countless foreign lands and pathways.
ਤਾ ਹਉ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਸੁਤੀ ਜਾ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਮੈ ਲਧਾ ॥੨॥
Thaa Ho Sukh Sukhaalee Suthee Jaa Gur Mil Sajan Mai Ladhhaa ||2||
ता हउ सुखि सुखाली सुती जा गुर मिलि सजणु मै लधा ॥२॥
But then, I slept in peace and comfort, when I met the Guru, and found my Friend. ||2||
