ਸਚੁ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੀਤਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਟੈ ॥
Sach Puraanaa Hovai Naahee Seethaa Kadhae N Paattai ||
सचु पुराणा होवै नाही सीता कदे न पाटै ॥
But the Truth does not grow old; and when it is stitched, it is never torn again.

First Mehl:
ਸਚ ਕੀ ਕਾਤੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
Sach Kee Kaathee Sach Sabh Saar ||
सच की काती सचु सभु सारु ॥
The knife is Truth, and its steel is totally True.
ਘਾੜਤ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
Ghaarrath This Kee Apar Apaar ||
घाड़त तिस की अपर अपार ॥
Its workmanship is incomparably beautiful.
ਸਬਦੇ ਸਾਣ ਰਖਾਈ ਲਾਇ ॥
Sabadhae Saan Rakhaaee Laae ||
सबदे साण रखाई लाइ ॥
It is sharpened on the grindstone of the Shabad.
ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਥੇਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Gun Kee Thhaekai Vich Samaae ||
गुण की थेकै विचि समाइ ॥
It is placed in the scabbard of virtue.
ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਖੁ ॥
This Dhaa Kuthaa Hovai Saekh ||
तिस दा कुठा होवै सेखु ॥
If the Shaykh is killed with that,
ਲੋਹੂ ਲਬੁ ਨਿਕਥਾ ਵੇਖੁ ॥
Lohoo Lab Nikathhaa Vaekh ||
लोहू लबु निकथा वेखु ॥
Then the blood of greed will spill out.
ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਹਕਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
Hoe Halaal Lagai Hak Jaae ||
होइ हलालु लगै हकि जाइ ॥
One who is slaughtered in this ritualistic way, will be attached to the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਦਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक दरि दीदारि समाइ ॥२॥
O Nanak, at the Lord's door, he is absorbed into His Blessed Vision. ||2||

ਕਮਰਿ ਕਟਾਰਾ ਬੰਕੁੜਾ ਬੰਕੇ ਕਾ ਅਸਵਾਰੁ ॥
Kamar Kattaaraa Bankurraa Bankae Kaa Asavaar ||
कमरि कटारा बंकुड़ा बंके का असवारु ॥
A beautiful dagger hangs by your waist, and you ride such a beautiful horse.
ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
Garab N Keejai Naanakaa Math Sir Aavai Bhaar ||3||
गरबु न कीजै नानका मतु सिरि आवै भारु ॥३॥
But don't be too proud; O Nanak, you may fall head first to the ground. ||3||

Pauree:
ਸੋ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਲੈ ॥
So Sathasangath Sabadh Milai Jo Guramukh Chalai ||
सो सतसंगति सबदि मिलै जो गुरमुखि चलै ॥
They alone walk as Gurmukh, who receive the Shabad in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ॥
Sach Dhhiaaein Sae Sachae Jin Har Kharach Dhhan Palai ||
सचु धिआइनि से सचे जिन हरि खरचु धनु पलै ॥
Meditating on the True Lord, they become truthful; they carry in their robes the supplies of the Lord's wealth.
ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਚਲੈ ॥
Bhagath Sohan Gun Gaavadhae Guramath Achalai ||
भगत सोहनि गुण गावदे गुरमति अचलै ॥
The devotees look beautiful, singing the Praises of the Lord; following the Guru's Teachings, they become stable and unchanging.
ਰਤਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਲੈ ॥
Rathan Beechaar Man Vasiaa Gur Kai Sabadh Bhalai ||
रतन बीचारु मनि वसिआ गुर कै सबदि भलै ॥
They enshrine the jewel of contemplation within their minds, and the most sublime Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੯॥
Aapae Mael Milaaeidhaa Aapae Dhaee Vaddiaaee ||19||
आपे मेलि मिलाइदा आपे देइ वडिआई ॥१९॥
He Himself unites in His Union; He Himself grants glorious greatness. ||19||

ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕੋਇ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
Aasaa Andhar Sabh Ko Koe Niraasaa Hoe ||
आसा अंदरि सभु को कोइ निरासा होइ ॥
Everyone is filled with hope; hardly anyone is free of hope.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
Naanak Jo Mar Jeeviaa Sehilaa Aaeiaa Soe ||1||
नानक जो मरि जीविआ सहिला आइआ सोइ ॥१॥
O Nanak, blessed is the birth of one, who remains dead while yet alive. ||1||

ना किछु आसा हथि है केउ निरासा होइ ॥
Nothing is in the hands of hope. How can one become free of hope?
ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਏਹ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਜਾਂ ਭਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

किआ करे एह बपुड़ी जां भोलाए सोइ ॥२॥
What can this poor being do? The Lord Himself creates confusion. ||2||

ध्रिगु जीवणु संसार सचे नाम बिनु ॥
Cursed is the life in this world, without the True Name.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਹੁ ਧਨੁ ॥
Prabh Dhaathaa Dhaathaar Nihachal Eaehu Dhhan ||
प्रभु दाता दातार निहचलु एहु धनु ॥
God is the Great Giver of givers. His wealth is permanent and unchanging.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਇ ਜਨੁ ॥
Saas Saas Aaraadhhae Niramal Soe Jan ||
सासि सासि आराधे निरमलु सोइ जनु ॥
That humble being is immaculate, who worships the Lord with each and every breath.
ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਅਗਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਏਕੁ ਭਨੁ ॥
Antharajaamee Agam Rasanaa Eaek Bhan ||
अंतरजामी अगमु रसना एकु भनु ॥
With your tongue, vibrate the One Inaccessible Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੨੦॥
Rav Rehiaa Sarabath Naanak Bal Jaaee ||20||
रवि रहिआ सरबति नानकु बलि जाई ॥२०॥
He is all-pervading everywhere. Nanak is a sacrifice to Him. ||20||

Saravar Hans Dhhurae Hee Maelaa Khasamai Eaevai Bhaanaa ||
सरवर हंस धुरे ही मेला खसमै एवै भाणा ॥
The union between the lake of the True Guru and the swan of the soul was pre-ordained from the very beginning, by the Pleasure of the Lord's Will.
ਸਰਵਰ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੀਰਾ ਮੋਤੀ ਸੋ ਹੰਸਾ ਕਾ ਖਾਣਾ ॥
Saravar Andhar Heeraa Mothee So Hansaa Kaa Khaanaa ||
सरवर अंदरि हीरा मोती सो हंसा का खाणा ॥
The diamonds are in this lake; they are the food of the swans.
ਬਗੁਲਾ ਕਾਗੁ ਨ ਰਹਈ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਤਿ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥
Bagulaa Kaag N Rehee Saravar Jae Hovai Ath Siaanaa ||
बगुला कागु न रहई सरवरि जे होवै अति सिआणा ॥
The cranes and the ravens may be very wise, but they do not remain in this lake.
ਓਨਾ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਨ ਪਇਓ ਓਥੈ ਓਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਰੋ ਖਾਣਾ ॥
Ounaa Rijak N Paeiou Outhhai Ounhaa Horo Khaanaa ||
ओना रिजकु न पइओ ओथै ओन्हा होरो खाणा ॥
They do not find their food there; their food is different.
ਸਚਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਸਚੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜਾ ਮਾਣਾ ॥
Sach Kamaanai Sacho Paaeeai Koorrai Koorraa Maanaa ||
सचि कमाणै सचो पाईऐ कूड़ै कूड़ा माणा ॥
Practicing Truth, the True Lord is found. False is the pride of the false.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੌ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਧੁਰੇ ਪੈਯਾ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
Naanak Thin Ka Sathigur Miliaa Jinaa Dhhurae Paiyaa Paravaanaa ||1||
नानक तिन कौ सतिगुरु मिलिआ जिना धुरे पैया परवाणा ॥१॥
O Nanak, they alone meet the True Guru, who are so pre-destined by the Lord's Command. ||1||

साहिबु मेरा उजला जे को चिति करेइ ॥
My Lord and Master is immaculate, as are those who think of Him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਇ ॥
Naanak Soee Saeveeai Sadhaa Sadhaa Jo Dhaee ||
नानक सोई सेवीऐ सदा सदा जो देइ ॥
O Nanak, serve Him, who gives to you forever and ever.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Naanak Soee Saeveeai Jith Saeviai Dhukh Jaae ||
नानक सोई सेवीऐ जितु सेविऐ दुखु जाइ ॥
O Nanak, serve Him; by serving Him, sorrow is dispelled.
ਅਵਗੁਣ ਵੰਞਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸੈ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
Avagun Vannjan Gun Ravehi Man Sukh Vasai Aae ||2||
अवगुण वंञनि गुण रवहि मनि सुखु वसै आइ ॥२॥
Faults and demerits vanish, and virtues take their place; peace comes to dwell in the mind. ||2||

आपे आपि वरतदा आपि ताड़ी लाईअनु ॥
He Himself is all-pervading; He Himself is absorbed in the profound state of Samaadhi.
ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਉਪਦੇਸਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਤੀਆਈਅਨੁ ॥
Aapae Hee Oupadhaesadhaa Guramukh Patheeaaeean ||
आपे ही उपदेसदा गुरमुखि पतीआईअनु ॥
He Himself instructs; the Gurmukh is satisfied and fulfilled.
ਇਕਿ ਆਪੇ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ॥
Eik Aapae Oujharr Paaeian Eik Bhagathee Laaeian ||
इकि आपे उझड़ि पाइअनु इकि भगती लाइअनु ॥
Some, He causes to wander in the wilderness, while others are committed to His devotional worship.
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ॥
Jis Aap Bujhaaeae So Bujhasee Aapae Naae Laaeean ||
जिसु आपि बुझाए सो बुझसी आपे नाइ लाईअनु ॥
He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand; He Himself attaches mortals to His Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨੧॥੧॥ ਸੁਧੁ ॥
