माइआ मोहु बिवरजि समाए ॥
Eradicating attachment to Maya, one merges into the Lord.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
Sathigur Bhaettai Mael Milaaeae ||
सतिगुरु भेटै मेलि मिलाए ॥
Meeting with the True Guru, we unite in His Union.
ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕੁ ਹੀਰਾ ॥
Naam Rathan Niramolak Heeraa ||
नामु रतनु निरमोलकु हीरा ॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a priceless jewel, a diamond.
ਤਿਤੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੨॥
Thith Raathaa Maeraa Man Dhheeraa ||2||
तितु राता मेरा मनु धीरा ॥२॥
Attuned to it, the mind is comforted and encouraged. ||2||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
Houmai Mamathaa Rog N Laagai ||
हउमै ममता रोगु न लागै ॥
The diseases of egotism and possessiveness do not afflict
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
Raam Bhagath Jam Kaa Bho Bhaagai ||
राम भगति जम का भउ भागै ॥
One who worships the Lord. Fear of the Messenger of Death runs away.
ਜਮੁ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਮੋਹਿ ॥
Jam Jandhaar N Laagai Mohi ||
जमु जंदारु न लागै मोहि ॥
The Messenger of Death, the enemy of the soul, does not touch me at all.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਹਿ ॥੩॥
Niramal Naam Ridhai Har Sohi ||3||
निरमल नामु रिदै हरि सोहि ॥३॥
The Immaculate Name of the Lord illuminates my heart. ||3||
ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
Sabadh Beechaar Bheae Nirankaaree ||
सबदु बीचारि भए निरंकारी ॥
Contemplating the Shabad, we become Nirankaari - we come to belong to the Formless Lord God.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਗੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਰਹਾਰੀ ॥
Guramath Jaagae Dhuramath Parehaaree ||
गुरमति जागे दुरमति परहारी ॥
Awakening to the Guru's Teachings, evil-mindedness is taken away.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
Anadhin Jaag Rehae Liv Laaee ||
अनदिनु जागि रहे लिव लाई ॥
Remaining awake and aware night and day, lovingly focused on the Lord,
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥
Jeevan Mukath Gath Anthar Paaee ||4||
जीवन मुकति गति अंतरि पाई ॥४॥
One becomes Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive. He finds this state deep within himself. ||4||
ਅਲਿਪਤ ਗੁਫਾ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ॥
Alipath Gufaa Mehi Rehehi Niraarae ||
अलिपत गुफा महि रहहि निरारे ॥
In the secluded cave, I remain unattached.
ਤਸਕਰ ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
Thasakar Panch Sabadh Sanghaarae ||
तसकर पंच सबदि संघारे ॥
With the Word of the Shabad, I have killed the five thieves.
ਪਰ ਘਰ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਾਏ ॥
Par Ghar Jaae N Man Ddolaaeae ||
पर घर जाइ न मनु डोलाए ॥
My mind does not waver or go to the home of any other.
ਸਹਜ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਰਹਉ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੫॥
Sehaj Niranthar Reho Samaaeae ||5||
सहज निरंतरि रहउ समाए ॥५॥
I remain intuitively absorbed deep within. ||5||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੇ ਅਉਧੂਤਾ ॥
Guramukh Jaag Rehae Aoudhhoothaa ||
गुरमुखि जागि रहे अउधूता ॥
As Gurmukh, I remain awake and aware, unattached.
ਸਦ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਤਤੁ ਪਰੋਤਾ ॥
Sadh Bairaagee Thath Parothaa ||
सद बैरागी ततु परोता ॥
Forever detached, I am woven into the essence of reality.
ਜਗੁ ਸੂਤਾ ਮਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
Jag Soothaa Mar Aavai Jaae ||
जगु सूता मरि आवै जाइ ॥
The world is asleep; it dies, and comes and goes in reincarnation.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੬॥
Bin Gur Sabadh N Sojhee Paae ||6||
बिनु गुर सबद न सोझी पाइ ॥६॥
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, it does not understand. ||6||
ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
Anehadh Sabadh Vajai Dhin Raathee ||
अनहद सबदु वजै दिनु राती ॥
The unstruck sound current of the Shabad vibrates day and night.
ਅਵਿਗਤ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
Avigath Kee Gath Guramukh Jaathee ||
अविगत की गति गुरमुखि जाती ॥
The Gurmukh knows the state of the eternal, unchanging Lord God.
ਤਉ ਜਾਨੀ ਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੀ ॥
Tho Jaanee Jaa Sabadh Pashhaanee ||
तउ जानी जा सबदि पछानी ॥
When someone realizes the Shabad, then he truly knows.
ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਿਰਬਾਨੀ ॥੭॥
Eaeko Rav Rehiaa Nirabaanee ||7||
एको रवि रहिआ निरबानी ॥७॥
The One Lord is permeating and pervading everywhere in Nirvaanaa. ||7||
ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
Sunn Samaadhh Sehaj Man Raathaa ||
सुंन समाधि सहजि मनु राता ॥
My mind is intuitively absorbed in the state of deepest Samaadhi;
ਤਜਿ ਹਉ ਲੋਭਾ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
Thaj Ho Lobhaa Eaeko Jaathaa ||
तजि हउ लोभा एको जाता ॥
Renouncing egotism and greed, I have come to know the One Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਅਪਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
Gur Chaelae Apanaa Man Maaniaa ||
गुर चेले अपना मनु मानिआ ॥
When the disciple's mind accepts the Guru,
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜਾ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੮॥੩॥
Naanak Dhoojaa Maett Samaaniaa ||8||3||
नानक दूजा मेटि समानिआ ॥८॥३॥
O Nanak, duality is eradicated, and he merges in the Lord. ||8||3||

साहा गणहि न करहि बीचारु ॥
You calculate the auspicious days, but you do not understand
ਸਾਹੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
Saahae Oopar Eaekankaar ||
साहे ऊपरि एकंकारु ॥
That the One Creator Lord is above these auspicious days.
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
Jis Gur Milai Soee Bidhh Jaanai ||
जिसु गुरु मिलै सोई बिधि जाणै ॥
He alone knows the way, who meets the Guru.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੧॥
Guramath Hoe Th Hukam Pashhaanai ||1||
गुरमति होइ त हुकमु पछाणै ॥१॥
When one follows the Guru's Teachings, then he realizes the Hukam of God's Command. ||1||
ਝੂਠੁ ਨ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਾਡੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
Jhooth N Bol Paaddae Sach Keheeai ||
झूठु न बोलि पाडे सचु कहीऐ ॥
Do not tell lies, O Pandit; O religious scholar, speak the Truth.
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਘਰੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउमै जाइ सबदि घरु लहीऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
When egotism is eradicated through the Word of the Shabad, then one finds His home. ||1||Pause||
ਗਣਿ ਗਣਿ ਜੋਤਕੁ ਕਾਂਡੀ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
Gan Gan Jothak Kaanddee Keenee ||
गणि गणि जोतकु कांडी कीनी ॥
Calculating and counting, the astrologer draws the horoscope.
ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੀ ॥
Parrai Sunaavai Thath N Cheenee ||
पड़ै सुणावै ततु न चीनी ॥
He studies it and announces it, but he does not understand reality.
ਸਭਸੈ ਊਪਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Sabhasai Oopar Gur Sabadh Beechaar ||
सभसै ऊपरि गुर सबदु बीचारु ॥
Understand, that the Word of the Guru's Shabad is above all.
ਹੋਰ ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਉ ਨ ਸਗਲੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
Hor Kathhanee Badho N Sagalee Shhaar ||2||
होर कथनी बदउ न सगली छारु ॥२॥
Do not speak of anything else; it is all just ashes. ||2||
ਨਾਵਹਿ ਧੋਵਹਿ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਸੈਲਾ ॥
Naavehi Dhhovehi Poojehi Sailaa ||
नावहि धोवहि पूजहि सैला ॥
You bathe, wash, and worship stones.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਮੈਲੋ ਮੈਲਾ ॥
Bin Har Raathae Mailo Mailaa ||
बिनु हरि राते मैलो मैला ॥
But without being imbued with the Lord, you are the filthiest of the filthy.
ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਰਥਿ ॥
Garab Nivaar Milai Prabh Saarathh ||
गरबु निवारि मिलै प्रभु सारथि ॥
Subduing your pride, you shall receive the supreme wealth of God.
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥਿ ॥੩॥
Mukath Praan Jap Har Kirathaarathh ||3||
मुकति प्रान जपि हरि किरतारथि ॥३॥
The mortal is liberated and emancipated, meditating on the Lord. ||3||
ਵਾਚੈ ਵਾਦੁ ਨ ਬੇਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
Vaachai Vaadh N Baedh Beechaarai ||
वाचै वादु न बेदु बीचारै ॥
You study the arguments, but do not contemplate the Vedas.
ਆਪਿ ਡੁਬੈ ਕਿਉ ਪਿਤਰਾ ਤਾਰੈ ॥
Aap Ddubai Kio Pitharaa Thaarai ||
आपि डुबै किउ पितरा तारै ॥
You drown yourself - how will you save your ancestors?
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਚੀਨੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
Ghatt Ghatt Breham Cheenai Jan Koe ||
घटि घटि ब्रहमु चीनै जनु कोइ ॥
How rare is that person who realizes that God is in each and every heart.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥
Sathigur Milai Th Sojhee Hoe ||4||
सतिगुरु मिलै त सोझी होइ ॥४॥
When one meets the True Guru, then he understands. ||4||
ਗਣਤ ਗਣੀਐ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਜੀਐ ॥
Ganath Ganeeai Sehasaa Dhukh Jeeai ||
गणत गणीऐ सहसा दुखु जीऐ ॥
Making his calculations, cynicism and suffering afflict his soul.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਥੀਐ ॥
Gur Kee Saran Pavai Sukh Thheeai ||
गुर की सरणि पवै सुखु थीऐ ॥
Seeking the Sanctuary of the Guru, peace is found.
ਕਰਿ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਸਰਣਿ ਹਮ ਆਇਆ ॥
Kar Aparaadhh Saran Ham Aaeiaa ||
करि अपराध सरणि हम आइआ ॥
I sinned and made mistakes, but now I seek Your Sanctuary.
ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਭੇਟੇ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
Gur Har Bhaettae Purab Kamaaeiaa ||5||
गुर हरि भेटे पुरबि कमाइआ ॥५॥
The Guru led me to meet the Lord, according to my past actions. ||5||
ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Gur Saran N Aaeeai Breham N Paaeeai ||
गुर सरणि न आईऐ ब्रहमु न पाईऐ ॥
If one does not enter the Guru's Sanctuary, God cannot be found.
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈਐ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਈਐ ॥
Bharam Bhulaaeeai Janam Mar Aaeeai ||
भरमि भुलाईऐ जनमि मरि आईऐ ॥
Deluded by doubt, one is born, only to die, and come back again.
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧਉ ਮਰੈ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
Jam Dhar Baadhho Marai Bikaar ||
जम दरि बाधउ मरै बिकारु ॥
Dying in corruption, he is bound and gagged at Death's door.
ਨਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
Naa Ridhai Naam N Sabadh Achaar ||6||
ना रिदै नामु न सबदु अचारु ॥६॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is not in his heart, and he does not act according to the Shabad. ||6||
ਇਕਿ ਪਾਧੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮਿਸਰ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
Eik Paadhhae Panddith Misar Kehaavehi ||
इकि पाधे पंडित मिसर कहावहि ॥
Some call themselves Pandits, religious scholars and spiritual teachers.
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
Dhubidhhaa Raathae Mehal N Paavehi ||
दुबिधा राते महलु न पावहि ॥
Tinged with double-mindedness, they do not find the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
