Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
Rehan N Paavehi Sur Nar Dhaevaa ||
रहणु न पावहि सुरि नर देवा ॥
The angelic beings and demi-gods are not permitted to remain here.
ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੧॥
Ooth Sidhhaarae Kar Mun Jan Saevaa ||1||
ऊठि सिधारे करि मुनि जन सेवा ॥१॥
The silent sages and humble servants also must arise and depart. ||1||
ਜੀਵਤ ਪੇਖੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
Jeevath Paekhae Jinhee Har Har Dhhiaaeiaa ||
जीवत पेखे जिन्ही हरि हरि धिआइआ ॥
Only those who meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, are seen to live on.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Saadhhasang Thinhee Dharasan Paaeiaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
साधसंगि तिन्ही दरसनु पाइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, they obtain the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. ||1||Pause||
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਸਾਹ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਮਰਨਾ ॥
Baadhisaah Saah Vaapaaree Maranaa ||
बादिसाह साह वापारी मरना ॥
Kings, emperors and merchants must die.
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਕਾਲਹਿ ਖਰਨਾ ॥੨॥
Jo Dheesai So Kaalehi Kharanaa ||2||
जो दीसै सो कालहि खरना ॥२॥
Whoever is seen shall be consumed by death. ||2||
ਕੂੜੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਲਪਟਿ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥
Koorrai Mohi Lapatt Lapattaanaa ||
कूड़ै मोहि लपटि लपटाना ॥
Mortal beings are entangled, clinging to false worldly attachments.
ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਤਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
Shhodd Chaliaa Thaa Fir Pashhuthaanaa ||3||
छोडि चलिआ ता फिरि पछुताना ॥३॥
And when they must leave them behind, then they regret and grieve. ||3||
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
Kirapaa Nidhhaan Naanak Ko Karahu Dhaath ||
क्रिपा निधान नानक कउ करहु दाति ॥
O Lord, O treasure of mercy, please bless Nanak with this gift,
ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਪੀ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੪॥
Naam Thaeraa Japee Dhin Raath ||4||8||14||
नामु तेरा जपी दिनु राति ॥४॥८॥१४॥
That he may chant Your Name, day and night. ||4||8||14||

ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤੁਮਹਿ ਬਸਾਰੇ ॥
Ghatt Ghatt Anthar Thumehi Basaarae ||
घट घट अंतरि तुमहि बसारे ॥
You dwell deep within the heart of each and every being.
ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਸੂਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
Sagal Samagree Sooth Thumaarae ||1||
सगल समग्री सूति तुमारे ॥१॥
The entire universe is strung on Your Thread. ||1||
ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥
Thoon Preetham Thoon Praan Adhhaarae ||
तूं प्रीतम तूं प्रान अधारे ॥
You are my Beloved, the Support of my breath of life.
ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਗਸਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Thum Hee Paekh Paekh Man Bigasaarae ||1|| Rehaao ||
तुम ही पेखि पेखि मनु बिगसारे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Beholding You, gazing upon You, my mind blossoms forth. ||1||Pause||
ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥
Anik Jon Bhram Bhram Bhram Haarae ||
अनिक जोनि भ्रमि भ्रमि भ्रमि हारे ॥
Wandering, wandering, wandering through countless incarnations, I have grown so weary.
ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਅਬ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
Outt Gehee Ab Saadhh Sangaarae ||2||
ओट गही अब साध संगारे ॥२॥
Now, I hold tight to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||2||
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
Agam Agochar Alakh Apaarae ||
अगम अगोचरु अलख अपारे ॥
You are inaccessible, incomprehensible, invisible and infinite.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਾਰੇ ॥੩॥੯॥੧੫॥
Naanak Simarai Dhin Rainaarae ||3||9||15||
नानकु सिमरै दिनु रैनारे ॥३॥९॥१५॥
Nanak remembers You in meditation, day and night. ||3||9||15||

ਕਵਨ ਕਾਜ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
Kavan Kaaj Maaeiaa Vaddiaaee ||
कवन काज माइआ वडिआई ॥
What is the use of the glory of Maya?
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੧॥
Jaa Ko Binasath Baar N Kaaee ||1||
जा कउ बिनसत बार न काई ॥१॥
It disappears in no time at all. ||1||
ਇਹੁ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਸੋਵਤ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
Eihu Supanaa Sovath Nehee Jaanai ||
इहु सुपना सोवत नही जानै ॥
This is a dream, but the sleeper does not know it.
ਅਚੇਤ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਮਹਿ ਲਪਟਾਨੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Achaeth Bivasathhaa Mehi Lapattaanai ||1|| Rehaao ||
अचेत बिवसथा महि लपटानै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
In his unconscious state, he clings to it. ||1||Pause||
ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥
Mehaa Mohi Mohiou Gaavaaraa ||
महा मोहि मोहिओ गावारा ॥
The poor fool is enticed by the great attachments of the world.
ਪੇਖਤ ਪੇਖਤ ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
Paekhath Paekhath Ooth Sidhhaaraa ||2||
पेखत पेखत ऊठि सिधारा ॥२॥
Gazing upon them, watching them, he must still arise and depart. ||2||
ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥
Ooch Thae Ooch Thaa Kaa Dharabaaraa ||
ऊच ते ऊच ता का दरबारा ॥
The Royal Court of His Darbaar is the highest of the high.
ਕਈ ਜੰਤ ਬਿਨਾਹਿ ਉਪਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
Kee Janth Binaahi Oupaaraa ||3||
कई जंत बिनाहि उपारा ॥३॥
He creates and destroys countless beings. ||3||
ਦੂਸਰ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਈ ॥
Dhoosar Hoaa Naa Ko Hoee ||
दूसर होआ ना को होई ॥
There has never been any other, and there shall never be.
ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੧੬॥
Jap Naanak Prabh Eaeko Soee ||4||10||16||
जपि नानक प्रभ एको सोई ॥४॥१०॥१६॥
O Nanak, meditate on the One God. ||4||10||16||

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ॥
Simar Simar Thaa Ko Ho Jeevaa ||
सिमरि सिमरि ता कउ हउ जीवा ॥
Meditating, meditating in remembrance on Him, I live.
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਧੋਇ ਧੋਇ ਪੀਵਾ ॥੧॥
Charan Kamal Thaerae Dhhoe Dhhoe Peevaa ||1||
चरण कमल तेरे धोइ धोइ पीवा ॥१॥
I wash Your Lotus Feet, and drink in the wash water. ||1||
ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
So Har Maeraa Antharajaamee ||
सो हरि मेरा अंतरजामी ॥
He is my Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bhagath Janaa Kai Sang Suaamee ||1|| Rehaao ||
भगत जना कै संगि सुआमी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
My Lord and Master abides with His humble devotees. ||1||Pause||
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਾ ॥
Sun Sun Anmrith Naam Dhhiaavaa ||
सुणि सुणि अम्रित नामु धिआवा ॥
Hearing, hearing Your Ambrosial Naam, I meditate on it.
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥੨॥
Aath Pehar Thaerae Gun Gaavaa ||2||
आठ पहर तेरे गुण गावा ॥२॥
Twenty-four hours a day, I sing Your Glorious Praises. ||2||
ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਲੀਲਾ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦਾ ॥
Paekh Paekh Leelaa Man Aanandhaa ||
पेखि पेखि लीला मनि आनंदा ॥
Beholding, beholding Your divine play, my mind is in bliss.
ਗੁਣ ਅਪਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥੩॥
Gun Apaar Prabh Paramaanandhaa ||3||
गुण अपार प्रभ परमानंदा ॥३॥
Your Glorious Virtues are infinite, O God, O Lord of supreme bliss. ||3||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਭਉ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥
Jaa Kai Simaran Kashh Bho N Biaapai ||
जा कै सिमरनि कछु भउ न बिआपै ॥
Meditating in remembrance on Him, fear cannot touch me.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥੧੭॥
Sadhaa Sadhaa Naanak Har Jaapai ||4||11||17||
सदा सदा नानक हरि जापै ॥४॥११॥१७॥
Forever and ever, Nanak meditates on the Lord. ||4||11||17||

गुर कै बचनि रिदै धिआनु धारी ॥
Within my heart, I meditate on the Word of the Guru's Teachings.
ਰਸਨਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
Rasanaa Jaap Japo Banavaaree ||1||
रसना जापु जपउ बनवारी ॥१॥
With my tongue, I chant the Chant of the Lord. ||1||
ਸਫਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
Safal Moorath Dharasan Balihaaree ||
सफल मूरति दरसन बलिहारी ॥
The image of His vision is fruitful; I am a sacrifice to it.
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

चरण कमल मन प्राण अधारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
His Lotus Feet are the Support of the mind, the Support of the very breath of life. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥
Saadhhasang Janam Maran Nivaaree ||
साधसंगि जनम मरण निवारी ॥
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the cycle of birth and death is ended.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਕਰਨ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
Anmrith Kathhaa Sun Karan Adhhaaree ||2||
अम्रित कथा सुणि करन अधारी ॥२॥
To hear the Ambrosial Sermon is the support of my ears. ||2||
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਤਜਾਰੀ ॥
Kaam Krodhh Lobh Moh Thajaaree ||
काम क्रोध लोभ मोह तजारी ॥
I have renounced sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment.
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਸੁਚਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
Dhrirr Naam Dhaan Eisanaan Suchaaree ||3||
द्रिड़ु नाम दानु इसनानु सुचारी ॥३॥
I have enshrined the Naam within myself, with charity, true cleansing and righteous conduct. ||3||
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
Kahu Naanak Eihu Thath Beechaaree ||
कहु नानक इहु ततु बीचारी ॥
Says Nanak, I have contemplated this essence of reality;
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੧੮॥
Raam Naam Jap Paar Outhaaree ||4||12||18||
राम नाम जपि पारि उतारी ॥४॥१२॥१८॥
Chanting the Name of the Lord, I am carried across. ||4||12||18||

The sinner is absorbed in greed and emotional attachment.
