ਨਰ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਾਉ ॥
Nar Nihakaeval Nirabho Naao ||
नर निहकेवल निरभउ नाउ ॥
The Name makes a man pure and fearless.
ਅਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥ ਕਰੇ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
Anaathheh Naathh Karae Bal Jaao ||
अनाथह नाथ करे बलि जाउ ॥
It makes the masterless become the master of all. I am a sacrifice to him.
ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੫॥
Punarap Janam Naahee Gun Gaao ||5||
पुनरपि जनमु नाही गुण गाउ ॥५॥
Such a person is not reincarnated again; he sings the Glories of God. ||5||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
Anthar Baahar Eaeko Jaanai ||
अंतरि बाहरि एको जाणै ॥
Inwardly and outwardly, he knows the One Lord;
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
Gur Kai Sabadhae Aap Pashhaanai ||
गुर कै सबदे आपु पछाणै ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he realizes himself.
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਰਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ॥੬॥
Saachai Sabadh Dhar Neesaanai ||6||
साचै सबदि दरि नीसाणै ॥६॥
He bears the Banner and Insignia of the True Shabad in the Lord's Court. ||6||
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
Sabadh Marai This Nij Ghar Vaasaa ||
सबदि मरै तिसु निज घरि वासा ॥
One who dies in the Shabad abides in his own home within.
ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਆਸਾ ॥
Aavai N Jaavai Chookai Aasaa ||
आवै न जावै चूकै आसा ॥
He does not come or go in reincarnation, and his hopes are subdued.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥੭॥
Gur Kai Sabadh Kamal Paragaasaa ||7||
गुर कै सबदि कमलु परगासा ॥७॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, his heart-lotus blossoms forth. ||7||
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ॥
Jo Dheesai So Aas Niraasaa ||
जो दीसै सो आस निरासा ॥
Whoever is seen, is driven by hope and despair,
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
Kaam Krodhh Bikh Bhookh Piaasaa ||
काम क्रोध बिखु भूख पिआसा ॥
By sexual desire, anger, corruption, hunger and thirst.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਰਲੇ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੭॥
Naanak Biralae Milehi Oudhaasaa ||8||7||
नानक बिरले मिलहि उदासा ॥८॥७॥
O Nanak, those detached recluses who meet the Lord are so very rare. ||8||7||

Meeting such a slave, peace is obtained.
ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥
Dhukh Visarai Paavai Sach Soee ||1||
दुखु विसरै पावै सचु सोई ॥१॥
Pain is forgotten, when the True Lord is found. ||1||
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭਈ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ॥
Dharasan Dhaekh Bhee Math Pooree ||
दरसनु देखि भई मति पूरी ॥
Beholding the blessed vision of his darshan, my understanding has become perfect.
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਚਰਨਹ ਧੂਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अठसठि मजनु चरनह धूरी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The cleansing baths at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage are in the dust of his feet. ||1||Pause||
ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਤੋਖੇ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰਾ ॥
Naethr Santhokhae Eaek Liv Thaaraa ||
नेत्र संतोखे एक लिव तारा ॥
My eyes are contented with the constant love of the One Lord.
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸੂਚੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
Jihavaa Soochee Har Ras Saaraa ||2||
जिहवा सूची हरि रस सारा ॥२॥
My tongue is purified by the most sublime essence of the Lord. ||2||
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
Sach Karanee Abh Anthar Saevaa ||
सचु करणी अभ अंतरि सेवा ॥
True are my actions, and deep within my being, I serve Him.
ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਿਆ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੩॥
Man Thripathaasiaa Alakh Abhaevaa ||3||
मनु त्रिपतासिआ अलख अभेवा ॥३॥
My mind is satisfied by the Inscrutable, Mysterious Lord. ||3||
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸਾਚਾ ॥
Jeh Jeh Dhaekho Theh Theh Saachaa ||
जह जह देखउ तह तह साचा ॥
Wherever I look, there I find the True Lord.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਝਗਰਤ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥੪॥
Bin Boojhae Jhagarath Jag Kaachaa ||4||
बिनु बूझे झगरत जगु काचा ॥४॥
Without understanding, the world argues in falsehood. ||4||
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
Gur Samajhaavai Sojhee Hoee ||
गुरु समझावै सोझी होई ॥
When the Guru instructs, understanding is obtained.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੫॥
Guramukh Viralaa Boojhai Koee ||5||
गुरमुखि विरला बूझै कोई ॥५॥
How rare is that Gurmukh who understands. ||5||
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਖਵਾਲੇ ॥
Kar Kirapaa Raakhahu Rakhavaalae ||
करि किरपा राखहु रखवाले ॥
Show Your Mercy, and save me, O Savior Lord!
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥੬॥
Bin Boojhae Pasoo Bheae Baethaalae ||6||
बिनु बूझे पसू भए बेताले ॥६॥
Without understanding, people become beasts and demons. ||6||
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
Gur Kehiaa Avar Nehee Dhoojaa ||
गुरि कहिआ अवरु नही दूजा ॥
The Guru has said that there is no other at all.
ਕਿਸੁ ਕਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਰਉ ਅਨ ਪੂਜਾ ॥੭॥
Kis Kahu Dhaekh Karo An Poojaa ||7||
किसु कहु देखि करउ अन पूजा ॥७॥
So tell me, who should I see, and who should I worship? ||7||
ਸੰਤ ਹੇਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
Santh Haeth Prabh Thribhavan Dhhaarae ||
संत हेति प्रभि त्रिभवण धारे ॥
For the sake of the Saints, God has established the three worlds.
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨੈ ਸੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੮॥
Aatham Cheenai S Thath Beechaarae ||8||
आतमु चीनै सु ततु बीचारे ॥८॥
One who understands his own soul, contemplates the essence of reality. ||8||
ਸਾਚੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਚੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥
Saach Ridhai Sach Praem Nivaas ||
साचु रिदै सचु प्रेम निवास ॥
One whose heart is filled with Truth and true love
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ॥੯॥੮॥

प्रणवति नानक हम ता के दास ॥९॥८॥

ब्रहमै गरबु कीआ नही जानिआ ॥
Brahma acted in pride, and did not understand.
ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪੜੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥
Baedh Kee Bipath Parree Pashhuthaaniaa ||
बेद की बिपति पड़ी पछुतानिआ ॥
Only when he was faced with the downfall of the Vedas did he repent.
ਜਹ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਤਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
Jeh Prabh Simarae Thehee Man Maaniaa ||1||
जह प्रभ सिमरे तही मनु मानिआ ॥१॥
Remembering God in meditation, the mind is conciliated. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
Aisaa Garab Buraa Sansaarai ||
ऐसा गरबु बुरा संसारै ॥
Such is the horrible pride of the world.
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jis Gur Milai This Garab Nivaarai ||1|| Rehaao ||
जिसु गुरु मिलै तिसु गरबु निवारै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The Guru eliminates the pride of those who meet Him. ||1||Pause||
ਬਲਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
Bal Raajaa Maaeiaa Ahankaaree ||
बलि राजा माइआ अहंकारी ॥
Bal the King, in Maya and egotism,
ਜਗਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਰ ਅਫਾਰੀ ॥
Jagan Karai Bahu Bhaar Afaaree ||
जगन करै बहु भार अफारी ॥
Held his ceremonial feasts, but he was puffed up with pride.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛੇ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਰੀ ॥੨॥
Bin Gur Pooshhae Jaae Paeiaaree ||2||
बिनु गुर पूछे जाइ पइआरी ॥२॥
Without the Guru's advice, he had to go to the underworld. ||2||
ਹਰੀਚੰਦੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਜਸੁ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
Hareechandh Dhaan Karai Jas Laevai ||
हरीचंदु दानु करै जसु लेवै ॥
Hari Chand gave in charity, and earned public praise.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ਅਭੇਵੈ ॥
Bin Gur Anth N Paae Abhaevai ||
बिनु गुर अंतु न पाइ अभेवै ॥
But without the Guru, he did not find the limits of the Mysterious Lord.
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ਆਪੇ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਵੈ ॥੩॥
Aap Bhulaae Aapae Math Dhaevai ||3||
आपि भुलाइ आपे मति देवै ॥३॥
The Lord Himself misleads people, and He Himself imparts understanding. ||3||
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਦੁਰਾਚਾਰੀ ॥
Dhuramath Haranaakhas Dhuraachaaree ||
दुरमति हरणाखसु दुराचारी ॥
The evil-minded Harnaakhash committed evil deeds.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਗਰਬ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੀ ॥
Prabh Naaraaein Garab Prehaaree ||
प्रभु नाराइणु गरब प्रहारी ॥
God, the Lord of all, is the Destroyer of pride.
ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
Prehalaadh Oudhhaarae Kirapaa Dhhaaree ||4||
प्रहलाद उधारे किरपा धारी ॥४॥
He bestowed His Mercy, and saved Prahlaad. ||4||
ਭੂਲੋ ਰਾਵਣੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਅਚੇਤਿ ॥
Bhoolo Raavan Mugadhh Achaeth ||
भूलो रावणु मुगधु अचेति ॥
Raawan was deluded, foolish and unwise.
ਲੂਟੀ ਲੰਕਾ ਸੀਸ ਸਮੇਤਿ ॥
Loottee Lankaa Sees Samaeth ||
लूटी लंका सीस समेति ॥
Sri Lanka was plundered, and he lost his head.
ਗਰਬਿ ਗਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੇਤਿ ॥੫॥
Garab Gaeiaa Bin Sathigur Haeth ||5||
गरबि गइआ बिनु सतिगुर हेति ॥५॥
He indulged in ego, and lacked the love of the True Guru. ||5||
ਸਹਸਬਾਹੁ ਮਧੁ ਕੀਟ ਮਹਿਖਾਸਾ ॥
Sehasabaahu Madhh Keett Mehikhaasaa ||
सहसबाहु मधु कीट महिखासा ॥
The Lord killed the thousand-armed Arjun, and the demons Madhu-keetab and Meh-khaasaa.
ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਲੇ ਨਖਹੁ ਬਿਧਾਸਾ ॥
Haranaakhas Lae Nakhahu Bidhhaasaa ||
हरणाखसु ले नखहु बिधासा ॥
He seized Harnaakhash and tore him apart with his nails.
ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥੬॥
Dhaith Sanghaarae Bin Bhagath Abhiaasaa ||6||
दैत संघारे बिनु भगति अभिआसा ॥६॥
The demons were slain; they did not practice devotional worship. ||6||
ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕਾਲਜਮੁਨ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥
Jaraasandhh Kaalajamun Sanghaarae ||
जरासंधि कालजमुन संघारे ॥
The demons Jaraa-sandh and Kaal-jamun were destroyed.
ਰਕਤਬੀਜੁ ਕਾਲੁਨੇਮੁ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥
Rakathabeej Kaalunaem Bidhaarae ||
रकतबीजु कालुनेमु बिदारे ॥
Rakat-beej and Kaal-naym were annihilated.
ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
Dhaith Sanghaar Santh Nisathaarae ||7||
दैत संघारि संत निसतारे ॥७॥
Slaying the demons, the Lord saved His Saints. ||7||
ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
Aapae Sathigur Sabadh Beechaarae ||
आपे सतिगुरु सबदु बीचारे ॥
He Himself, as the True Guru, contemplates the Shabad.
