ਤਤੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਾ ॥੨॥
Thath N Cheenehi Bannehi Pandd Paraalaa ||2||
ततु न चीनहि बंनहि पंड पराला ॥२॥
They do not understand the essence of reality, and they gather their worthless bundles of straw. ||2||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਕੁਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
Manamukh Agiaan Kumaarag Paaeae ||
मनमुख अगिआनि कुमारगि पाए ॥
The self-willed manmukhs, in ignorance, take the path of evil.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥
Har Naam Bisaariaa Bahu Karam Dhrirraaeae ||
हरि नामु बिसारिआ बहु करम द्रिड़ाए ॥
They forget the Lord's Name, and in its place, they establish all sorts of rituals.
ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੂਬੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
Bhavajal Ddoobae Dhoojai Bhaaeae ||3||
भवजलि डूबे दूजै भाए ॥३॥
They drown in the terrifying world-ocean, in the love of duality. ||3||
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
Maaeiaa Kaa Muhathaaj Panddith Kehaavai ||
माइआ का मुहताजु पंडितु कहावै ॥
Driven crazy, infatuated by Maya, they call themselves Pandits - religious scholars;
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Bikhiaa Raathaa Bahuth Dhukh Paavai ||
बिखिआ राता बहुतु दुखु पावै ॥
Stained with corruption, they suffer terrible pain.
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜਾ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
Jam Kaa Gal Jaevarraa Nith Kaal Santhaavai ||4||
जम का गलि जेवड़ा नित कालु संतावै ॥४॥
The noose of the Messenger of Death is around their necks; they are constantly tormented by death. ||4||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
Guramukh Jamakaal Naerr N Aavai ||
गुरमुखि जमकालु नेड़ि न आवै ॥
The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥
Houmai Dhoojaa Sabadh Jalaavai ||
हउमै दूजा सबदि जलावै ॥
Through the Word of the Shabad, they burn away their ego and duality.
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
Naamae Raathae Har Gun Gaavai ||5||
नामे राते हरि गुण गावै ॥५॥
Attuned to the Name, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਸੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
Maaeiaa Dhaasee Bhagathaa Kee Kaar Kamaavai ||
माइआ दासी भगता की कार कमावै ॥
Maya is the slave of the Lord's devotees; it works for them.
ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Charanee Laagai Thaa Mehal Paavai ||
चरणी लागै ता महलु पावै ॥
One who falls at their feet attains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
Sadh Hee Niramal Sehaj Samaavai ||6||
सद ही निरमलु सहजि समावै ॥६॥
He is forever immaculate; he is absorbed in intuitive peace. ||6||
ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
Har Kathhaa Sunehi Sae Dhhanavanth Dhisehi Jug Maahee ||
हरि कथा सुणहि से धनवंत दिसहि जुग माही ॥
Those who listen to the Lord's Sermon are seen to be the wealthy people in this world.
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਹੀ ॥
Thin Ko Sabh Nivehi Anadhin Pooj Karaahee ||
तिन कउ सभि निवहि अनदिनु पूज कराही ॥
Everyone bows down to them, and adores them, night and day.
ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੭॥
Sehajae Gun Ravehi Saachae Man Maahee ||7||
सहजे गुण रवहि साचे मन माही ॥७॥
They intuitively savor the Glories of the True Lord within their minds. ||7||
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
Poorai Sathigur Sabadh Sunaaeiaa ||
पूरै सतिगुरि सबदु सुणाइआ ॥
The Perfect True Guru has revealed the Shabad;
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਚਉਥੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
Thrai Gun Maettae Chouthhai Chith Laaeiaa ||
त्रै गुण मेटे चउथै चितु लाइआ ॥
It eradicates the three qualities, and attunes the consciousness to the fourth state.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੪॥

नानक हउमै मारि ब्रहम मिलाइआ ॥८॥४॥
O Nanak, subduing egotism, one is absorbed into God. ||8||4||

ब्रहमा वेदु पड़ै वादु वखाणै ॥
Brahma studied the Vedas, but these lead only to debates and disputes.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
Anthar Thaamas Aap N Pashhaanai ||
अंतरि तामसु आपु न पछाणै ॥
He is filled with darkness; he does not understand himself.
ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੧॥
Thaa Prabh Paaeae Gur Sabadh Vakhaanai ||1||
ता प्रभु पाए गुर सबदु वखाणै ॥१॥
And yet, if he chants the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he finds God. ||1||
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥
Gur Saevaa Karo Fir Kaal N Khaae ||
गुर सेवा करउ फिरि कालु न खाइ ॥
So serve the Guru, and you shall not be consumed by death.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖਾਧੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मनमुख खाधे दूजै भाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The self-willed manmukhs have been consumed by the love of duality. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਸੀਧੇ ॥
Guramukh Praanee Aparaadhhee Seedhhae ||
गुरमुखि प्राणी अपराधी सीधे ॥
Becoming Gurmukh, the sinful mortals are purified.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰੀਧੇ ॥
Gur Kai Sabadh Anthar Sehaj Reedhhae ||
गुर कै सबदि अंतरि सहजि रीधे ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they find intuitive peace and poise deep within.
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਧੇ ॥੨॥
Maeraa Prabh Paaeiaa Gur Kai Sabadh Seedhhae ||2||
मेरा प्रभु पाइआ गुर कै सबदि सीधे ॥२॥
I have found my God, through the Guru's Shabad, and I have been reformed. ||2||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
Sathigur Maelae Prabh Aap Milaaeae ||
सतिगुरि मेले प्रभि आपि मिलाए ॥
God Himself unites us in Union with the True Guru,
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
Maerae Prabh Saachae Kai Man Bhaaeae ||
मेरे प्रभ साचे कै मनि भाए ॥
When we become pleasing to the Mind of my True God.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
Har Gun Gaavehi Sehaj Subhaaeae ||3||
हरि गुण गावहि सहजि सुभाए ॥३॥
They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, in the poise of celestial peace. ||3||
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
Bin Gur Saachae Bharam Bhulaaeae ||
बिनु गुर साचे भरमि भुलाए ॥
Without the True Guru, they are deluded by doubt.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਏ ॥
Manamukh Andhhae Sadhaa Bikh Khaaeae ||
मनमुख अंधे सदा बिखु खाए ॥
The blind, self-willed manmukhs constantly eat poison.
ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਸਹਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
Jam Ddandd Sehehi Sadhaa Dhukh Paaeae ||4||
जम डंडु सहहि सदा दुखु पाए ॥४॥
They are beaten by the Messenger of Death with his rod, and they suffer in constant pain. ||4||
ਜਮੂਆ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
Jamooaa N Johai Har Kee Saranaaee ||
जमूआ न जोहै हरि की सरणाई ॥
The Messenger of Death does not catch sight of those who enter the Sanctuary of the Lord.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
Houmai Maar Sach Liv Laaee ||
हउमै मारि सचि लिव लाई ॥
Subduing egotism, they lovingly center their consciousness on the True Lord.
ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
Sadhaa Rehai Har Naam Liv Laaee ||5||
सदा रहै हरि नामि लिव लाई ॥५॥
They keep their consciousness constantly focused on the Lord's Name. ||5||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪਵਿਤਾ ॥
Sathigur Saevehi Sae Jan Niramal Pavithaa ||
सतिगुरु सेवहि से जन निरमल पविता ॥
Those humble beings who serve the True Guru are pure and immaculate.
ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤਾ ॥
Man Sio Man Milaae Sabh Jag Jeethaa ||
मन सिउ मनु मिलाइ सभु जगु जीता ॥
Merging their minds into the Mind, they conquer the entire world.
ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤਾ ॥੬॥
Ein Bidhh Kusal Thaerai Maerae Meethaa ||6||
इन बिधि कुसलु तेरै मेरे मीता ॥६॥
In this way, you too shall find happiness, O my friend. ||6||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
Sathiguroo Saevae So Fal Paaeae ||
सतिगुरू सेवे सो फलु पाए ॥
Those who serve the True Guru are blessed with fruitful rewards.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
Hiradhai Naam Vichahu Aap Gavaaeae ||
हिरदै नामु विचहु आपु गवाए ॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides in their hearts; selfishness and conceit depart from within them.
ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਏ ॥੭॥
Anehadh Baanee Sabadh Vajaaeae ||7||
अनहद बाणी सबदु वजाए ॥७॥
The unstruck melody of the Shabad vibrates for them. ||7||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਕਵਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਨ ਸੀਧੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
Sathigur Thae Kavan Kavan N Seedhho Maerae Bhaaee ||
सतिगुर ते कवनु कवनु न सीधो मेरे भाई ॥
Who - who has not been purified by the True Guru, O my Siblings of Destiny?
ਭਗਤੀ ਸੀਧੇ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
Bhagathee Seedhhae Dhar Sobhaa Paaee ||
भगती सीधे दरि सोभा पाई ॥
The devotees are purified, and honored in His Court.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੫॥
Naanak Raam Naam Vaddiaaee ||8||5||
नानक राम नामि वडिआई ॥८॥५॥
O Nanak, greatness is in the Lord's Name. ||8||5||

Those who speak of the three qualities - their doubts do not depart.
ਬੰਧਨ ਨ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
Bandhhan N Thoottehi Mukath N Paae ||
बंधन न तूटहि मुकति न पाइ ॥
Their bonds are not broken, and they do not obtain liberation.
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
Mukath Dhaathaa Sathigur Jug Maahi ||1||
मुकति दाता सतिगुरु जुग माहि ॥१॥
The True Guru is the Bestower of liberation in this age. ||1||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
Guramukh Praanee Bharam Gavaae ||
गुरमुखि प्राणी भरमु गवाइ ॥
Those mortals who become Gurmukh give up their doubts.
ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Sehaj Dhhun Oupajai Har Liv Laae ||1|| Rehaao ||
सहज धुनि उपजै हरि लिव लाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The celestial music wells up, when they lovingly attune their consciousness to the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕਾਲੈ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
Thrai Gun Kaalai Kee Sir Kaaraa ||
त्रै गुण कालै की सिरि कारा ॥
Those who are controlled by the three qualities have death hovering over their heads.
