ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
Par Ghar Cheeth Manamukh Ddolaae ||
पर घरि चीतु मनमुखि डोलाइ ॥
The self-willed manmukh is lured by another man's wife.
ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥
Gal Jaevaree Dhhandhhai Lapattaae ||
गलि जेवरी धंधै लपटाइ ॥
The noose is around his neck, and he is entangled in petty conflicts.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥
Guramukh Shhoottas Har Gun Gaae ||5||
गुरमुखि छूटसि हरि गुण गाइ ॥५॥
The Gurmukh is emancipated, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||
ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥
Jio Than Bidhhavaa Par Ko Dhaeee ||
जिउ तनु बिधवा पर कउ देई ॥
The lonely widow gives her body to a stranger;
ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥
Kaam Dhaam Chith Par Vas Saeee ||
कामि दामि चितु पर वसि सेई ॥
She allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money
ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
Bin Pir Thripath N Kabehoon Hoee ||6||
बिनु पिर त्रिपति न कबहूं होई ॥६॥
, but without her husband, she is never satisfied. ||6||
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥

पड़ि पड़ि पोथी सिम्रिति पाठा ॥
You may read, recite and study the scriptures,
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥
Baedh Puraan Parrai Sun Thhaattaa ||
बेद पुराण पड़ै सुणि थाटा ॥
The Simritees, Vedas and Puraanas;
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥
Bin Ras Raathae Man Bahu Naattaa ||7||
बिनु रस राते मनु बहु नाटा ॥७॥
But without being imbued with the Lord's essence, the mind wanders endlessly. ||7||
ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
Jio Chaathrik Jal Praem Piaasaa ||
जिउ चात्रिक जल प्रेम पिआसा ॥
As the rainbird thirsts longingly for the drop of rain,
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥
Jio Meenaa Jal Maahi Oulaasaa ||
जिउ मीना जल माहि उलासा ॥
And as the fish delights in the water,
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥
Naanak Har Ras Pee Thripathaasaa ||8||11||
नानक हरि रसु पी त्रिपतासा ॥८॥११॥
Nanak is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. ||8||11||

हठु करि मरै न लेखै पावै ॥
One who dies in stubbornness shall not be approved,
ਵੇਸ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
Vaes Karai Bahu Bhasam Lagaavai ||
वेस करै बहु भसम लगावै ॥
Even though he may wear religious robes and smear his body all over with ashes.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
Naam Bisaar Bahur Pashhuthaavai ||1||
नामु बिसारि बहुरि पछुतावै ॥१॥
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he comes to regret and repent in the end. ||1||
ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਸੂਖ ॥
Thoon Man Har Jeeo Thoon Man Sookh ||
तूं मनि हरि जीउ तूं मनि सूख ॥
Believe in the Dear Lord, and you shall find peace of mind.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਸਹਹਿ ਜਮ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

नामु बिसारि सहहि जम दूख ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Forgetting the Naam, you shall have to endure the pain of death. ||1||Pause||

चोआ चंदन अगर कपूरि ॥
The smell of musk, sandalwood and camphor,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
Maaeiaa Magan Param Padh Dhoor ||
माइआ मगनु परम पदु दूरि ॥
And the intoxication of Maya, takes one far away from the state of supreme dignity.
ਨਾਮਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
Naam Bisaariai Sabh Koorro Koor ||2||
नामि बिसारिऐ सभु कूड़ो कूरि ॥२॥
Forgetting the Naam, one becomes the most false of all the false. ||2||
ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
Naejae Vaajae Thakhath Salaam ||
नेजे वाजे तखति सलामु ॥
Lances and swords, marching bands, thrones and the salutes of others
ਅਧਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਮੁ ॥
Adhhakee Thrisanaa Viaapai Kaam ||
अधकी त्रिसना विआपै कामु ॥
Only increase his desire; he is engrossed in sexual desire.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਚੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੩॥
Bin Har Jaachae Bhagath N Naam ||3||
बिनु हरि जाचे भगति न नामु ॥३॥
Without seeking the Lord, neither devotional worship nor the Naam are obtained. ||3||
ਵਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਾ ॥
Vaadh Ahankaar Naahee Prabh Maelaa ||
वादि अहंकारि नाही प्रभ मेला ॥
Union with God is not obtained by arguments and egotism.
ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥
Man Dhae Paavehi Naam Suhaelaa ||
मनु दे पावहि नामु सुहेला ॥
But by offering your mind, the comfort of the Naam is obtained.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੪॥
Dhoojai Bhaae Agiaan Dhuhaelaa ||4||
दूजै भाइ अगिआनु दुहेला ॥४॥
In the love of duality and ignorance, you shall suffer. ||4||
ਬਿਨੁ ਦਮ ਕੇ ਸਉਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਟ ॥
Bin Dham Kae Soudhaa Nehee Haatt ||
बिनु दम के सउदा नही हाट ॥
Without money, you cannot buy anything in the store.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹੀ ਵਾਟ ॥
Bin Bohithh Saagar Nehee Vaatt ||
बिनु बोहिथ सागर नही वाट ॥
Without a boat, you cannot cross over the ocean.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਟਿ ॥੫॥
Bin Gur Saevae Ghaattae Ghaatt ||5||
बिनु गुर सेवे घाटे घाटि ॥५॥
Without serving the Guru, everything is lost. ||5||
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਵਾਟ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥
This Ko Vaahu Vaahu J Vaatt Dhikhaavai ||
तिस कउ वाहु वाहु जि वाट दिखावै ॥
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who shows us the Way.
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
This Ko Vaahu Vaahu J Sabadh Sunaavai ||
तिस कउ वाहु वाहु जि सबदु सुणावै ॥
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who teaches the Word of the Shabad.
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
This Ko Vaahu Vaahu J Mael Milaavai ||6||
तिस कउ वाहु वाहु जि मेलि मिलावै ॥६॥
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who unites me in the Lord's Union. ||6||
ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ॥
Vaahu Vaahu This Ko Jis Kaa Eihu Jeeo ||
वाहु वाहु तिस कउ जिस का इहु जीउ ॥
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who is the Keeper of this soul.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਉ ॥
Gur Sabadhee Mathh Anmrith Peeo ||
गुर सबदी मथि अम्रितु पीउ ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, contemplate this Ambrosial Nectar.
ਨਾਮ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੀਉ ॥੭॥
Naam Vaddaaee Thudhh Bhaanai Dheeo ||7||
नाम वडाई तुधु भाणै दीउ ॥७॥
The Glorious Greatness of the Naam is bestowed according to the Pleasure of Your Will. ||7||
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਮਾਇ ॥
Naam Binaa Kio Jeevaa Maae ||
नाम बिना किउ जीवा माइ ॥
Without the Naam, how can I live, O mother?
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਤੁ ਰਹਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥
Anadhin Japath Reho Thaeree Saranaae ||
अनदिनु जपतु रहउ तेरी सरणाइ ॥
Night and day, I chant it; I remain in the Protection of Your Sanctuary.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੨॥

नानक नामि रते पति पाइ ॥८॥१२॥
O Nanak, attuned to the Naam, honor is attained. ||8||12||

Acting in egotism, the Lord is not known, even by wearing religious robes.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
Guramukh Bhagath Viralae Man Maaniaa ||1||
गुरमुखि भगति विरले मनु मानिआ ॥१॥
How rare is that Gurmukh, who surrenders his mind in devotional worship. ||1||
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Ho Ho Karath Nehee Sach Paaeeai ||
हउ हउ करत नही सचु पाईऐ ॥
By actions done in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the True Lord is not obtained.
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Houmai Jaae Param Padh Paaeeai ||1|| Rehaao ||
हउमै जाइ परम पदु पाईऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
But when egotism departs, then the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||1||Pause||
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
Houmai Kar Raajae Bahu Dhhaavehi ||
हउमै करि राजे बहु धावहि ॥
The kings act in egotism, and undertake all sorts of expeditions.
ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥
Houmai Khapehi Janam Mar Aavehi ||2||
हउमै खपहि जनमि मरि आवहि ॥२॥
But through their egotism, they are ruined; they die, only to be reborn over and over again. ||2||
ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
Houmai Nivarai Gur Sabadh Veechaarai ||
हउमै निवरै गुर सबदु वीचारै ॥
Egotism is overcome only by contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥੩॥
Chanchal Math Thiaagai Panch Sanghaarai ||3||
चंचल मति तिआगै पंच संघारै ॥३॥
One who restrains his fickle mind subdues the five passions. ||3||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥
Anthar Saach Sehaj Ghar Aavehi ||
अंतरि साचु सहज घरि आवहि ॥
With the True Lord deep within the self, the Celestial Mansion is intuitively found.
ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥
Raajan Jaan Param Gath Paavehi ||4||
राजनु जाणि परम गति पावहि ॥४॥
Understanding the Sovereign Lord, the state of supreme dignity is obtained. ||4||
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
Sach Karanee Gur Bharam Chukaavai ||
सचु करणी गुरु भरमु चुकावै ॥
The Guru dispels the doubts of those whose actions are true.
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
Nirabho Kai Ghar Thaarree Laavai ||5||
निरभउ कै घरि ताड़ी लावै ॥५॥
They focus their attention on the Home of the Fearless Lord. ||5||
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Ho Ho Kar Maranaa Kiaa Paavai ||
हउ हउ करि मरणा किआ पावै ॥
Those who act in egotism, selfishness and conceit die; what do they gain?
ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
Pooraa Gur Bhaettae So Jhagar Chukaavai ||6||
पूरा गुरु भेटे सो झगरु चुकावै ॥६॥
Those who meet the Perfect Guru are rid of all conflicts. ||6||
ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
Jaethee Hai Thaethee Kihu Naahee ||
जेती है तेती किहु नाही ॥
Whatever exists, is in reality nothing.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਭੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੀ ॥੭॥

गुरमुखि गिआन भेटि गुण गाही ॥७॥
