The Gurmukh eradicates egotism from within.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥
Guramukh Mail N Laagai Aae ||
गुरमुखि मैलु न लागै आइ ॥
No filth sticks to the Gurmukh.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
Guramukh Naam Vasai Man Aae ||2||
गुरमुखि नामु वसै मनि आइ ॥२॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell within the mind of the Gurmukh. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸਚਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
Guramukh Karam Dhharam Sach Hoee ||
गुरमुखि करम धरम सचि होई ॥
Through karma and Dharma, good actions and righteous faith, the Gurmukh becomes true.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਦੋਈ ॥
Guramukh Ahankaar Jalaaeae Dhoee ||
गुरमुखि अहंकारु जलाए दोई ॥
The Gurmukh burns away egotism and duality.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
Guramukh Naam Rathae Sukh Hoee ||3||
गुरमुखि नामि रते सुखु होई ॥३॥
The Gurmukh is attuned to the Naam, and is at peace. ||3||
ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹੁ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
Aapanaa Man Parabodhhahu Boojhahu Soee ||
आपणा मनु परबोधहु बूझहु सोई ॥
Instruct your own mind, and understand Him.
ਲੋਕ ਸਮਝਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
Lok Samajhaavahu Sunae N Koee ||
लोक समझावहु सुणे न कोई ॥
You may preach to other people, but no one will listen.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮਝਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥
Guramukh Samajhahu Sadhaa Sukh Hoee ||4||
गुरमुखि समझहु सदा सुखु होई ॥४॥
The Gurmukh understands, and is always at peace. ||4||
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੰਫੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
Manamukh Ddanf Bahuth Chathuraaee ||
मनमुखि ड्मफु बहुतु चतुराई ॥
The self-willed manmukhs are such clever hypocrites.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
Jo Kishh Kamaavai S Thhaae N Paaee ||
जो किछु कमावै सु थाइ न पाई ॥
No matter what they do, it is not acceptable.
ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੫॥
Aavai Jaavai Thour N Kaaee ||5||
आवै जावै ठउर न काई ॥५॥
They come and go in reincarnation, and find no place of rest. ||5||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
Manamukh Karam Karae Bahuth Abhimaanaa ||
मनमुख करम करे बहुतु अभिमाना ॥
The manmukhs perform their rituals, but they are totally selfish and conceited.
ਬਗ ਜਿਉ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
Bag Jio Laae Behai Nith Dhhiaanaa ||
बग जिउ लाइ बहै नित धिआना ॥
They sit there, like storks, pretending to meditate.
ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥੬॥
Jam Pakarriaa Thab Hee Pashhuthaanaa ||6||
जमि पकड़िआ तब ही पछुताना ॥६॥
Caught by the Messenger of Death, they shall regret and repent in the end. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
Bin Sathigur Saevae Mukath N Hoee ||
बिनु सतिगुर सेवे मुकति न होई ॥
Without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
Gur Parasaadhee Milai Har Soee ||
गुर परसादी मिलै हरि सोई ॥
By Guru's Grace, one meets the Lord.
ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਹੋਈ ॥੭॥
Gur Dhaathaa Jug Chaarae Hoee ||7||
गुरु दाता जुग चारे होई ॥७॥
The Guru is the Great Giver, throughout the four ages. ||7||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

गुरमुखि जाति पति नामे वडिआई ॥
For the Gurmukh, the Naam is social status, honor and glorious greatness.
ਸਾਇਰ ਕੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ਬਿਦਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

साइर की पुत्री बिदारि गवाई ॥
Maya, the daughter of the ocean, has been slain.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਝੂਠੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੮॥੨॥

पूरै गुरि सभ सोझी पाई ॥
All understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru.

ऐथै अगै हरि नामु सखाई ॥१॥
Here and hereafter, the Lord's Name is our Companion. ||1||

राम पड़हु मनि करहु बीचारु ॥

Vaadh Virodhh N Paaeiaa Jaae ||
वादि विरोधि न पाइआ जाइ ॥
Through argument and debate, He cannot be found.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਫੀਕਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
Man Than Feekaa Dhoojai Bhaae ||
मनु तनु फीका दूजै भाइ ॥
The mind and body are made insipid through the love of duality.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
Gur Kai Sabadh Sach Liv Laae ||2||
गुर कै सबदि सचि लिव लाइ ॥२॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, lovingly attune yourself to the True Lord. ||2||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
Houmai Mailaa Eihu Sansaaraa ||
हउमै मैला इहु संसारा ॥
This world is polluted with egotism.
ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
Nith Theerathh Naavai N Jaae Ahankaaraa ||
नित तीरथि नावै न जाइ अहंकारा ॥
By taking cleansing baths daily at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, egotism is not eliminated.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥੩॥
Bin Gur Bhaettae Jam Karae Khuaaraa ||3||
बिनु गुर भेटे जमु करे खुआरा ॥३॥
Without meeting the Guru, they are tortured by Death. ||3||
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
So Jan Saachaa J Houmai Maarai ||
सो जनु साचा जि हउमै मारै ॥
Those humble beings are true, who conquer their ego.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥
Gur Kai Sabadh Panch Sanghaarai ||
गुर कै सबदि पंच संघारै ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they conquer the five thieves.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ॥੪॥
Aap Tharai Sagalae Kul Thaarai ||4||
आपि तरै सगले कुल तारै ॥४॥
They save themselves, and save all their generations as well. ||4||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਟਿ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
Maaeiaa Mohi Natt Baajee Paaee ||
माइआ मोहि नटि बाजी पाई ॥
The Actor has staged the drama of emotional attachment to Maya.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧ ਰਹੇ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥
Manamukh Andhh Rehae Lapattaaee ||
मनमुख अंध रहे लपटाई ॥
The self-willed manmukhs cling blindly to it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
Guramukh Alipath Rehae Liv Laaee ||5||
गुरमुखि अलिपत रहे लिव लाई ॥५॥
The Gurmukhs remain detached, and lovingly attune themselves to the Lord. ||5||
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥
Bahuthae Bhaekh Karai Bhaekhadhhaaree ||
बहुते भेख करै भेखधारी ॥
The disguisers put on their various disguises.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
Anthar Thisanaa Firai Ahankaaree ||
अंतरि तिसना फिरै अहंकारी ॥
Desire rages within them, and they carry on egotistically.
ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
Aap N Cheenai Baajee Haaree ||6||
आपु न चीनै बाजी हारी ॥६॥
They do not understand themselves, and they lose the game of life. ||6||
ਕਾਪੜ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
Kaaparr Pehir Karae Chathuraaee ||
कापड़ पहिरि करे चतुराई ॥
Putting on religious robes, they act so clever,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਤਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
Maaeiaa Mohi Ath Bharam Bhulaaee ||
माइआ मोहि अति भरमि भुलाई ॥
But they are totally deluded by doubt and emotional attachment to Maya.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
Bin Gur Saevae Bahuth Dhukh Paaee ||7||
बिनु गुर सेवे बहुतु दुखु पाई ॥७॥
Without serving the Guru, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7||
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
Naam Rathae Sadhaa Bairaagee ||
नामि रते सदा बैरागी ॥
Those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, remain detached forever.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
Grihee Anthar Saach Liv Laagee ||
ग्रिही अंतरि साचि लिव लागी ॥
Even as householders, they lovingly attune themselves to the True Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੮॥੩॥
Naanak Sathigur Saevehi Sae Vaddabhaagee ||8||3||
नानक सतिगुरु सेवहि से वडभागी ॥८॥३॥
O Nanak, those who serve the True Guru are blessed and very fortunate. ||8||3||

Brahma is the founder of the study of the Vedas.

This Thae Oupajae Dhaev Moh Piaasaa ||
तिस ते उपजे देव मोह पिआसा ॥
From him emanated the gods, enticed by desire.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੧॥
Thrai Gun Bharamae Naahee Nij Ghar Vaasaa ||1||
त्रै गुण भरमे नाही निज घरि वासा ॥१॥
They wander in the three qualities, and they do not dwell within their own home. ||1||
ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
Ham Har Raakhae Sathiguroo Milaaeiaa ||
हम हरि राखे सतिगुरू मिलाइआ ॥
The Lord has saved me; I have met the True Guru.
