Naam N Chaethehi Oupaavanehaaraa ||
नामु न चेतहि उपावणहारा ॥
They do not remember the Name of the Creator Lord.
ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
Mar Janmehi Fir Vaaro Vaaraa ||2||
मरि जमहि फिरि वारो वारा ॥२॥
They die, and are reborn, over and over, again and again. ||2||
ਅੰਧੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
Andhhae Guroo Thae Bharam N Jaaee ||
अंधे गुरू ते भरमु न जाई ॥
Those whose guru is spiritually blind - their doubts are not dispelled.
ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਈ ॥
Mool Shhodd Laagae Dhoojai Bhaaee ||
मूलु छोडि लागे दूजै भाई ॥
Abandoning the Source of all, they have become attached to the love of duality.
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੩॥
Bikh Kaa Maathaa Bikh Maahi Samaaee ||3||
बिखु का माता बिखु माहि समाई ॥३॥
Infected with poison, they are immersed in poison. ||3||
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਭਰਮਾਏ ॥
Maaeiaa Kar Mool Janthr Bharamaaeae ||
माइआ करि मूलु जंत्र भरमाए ॥
Believing Maya to be the source of all, they wander in doubt.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥
Har Jeeo Visariaa Dhoojai Bhaaeae ||
हरि जीउ विसरिआ दूजै भाए ॥
They have forgotten the Dear Lord, and they are in love with duality.
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥
Jis Nadhar Karae So Param Gath Paaeae ||4||
जिसु नदरि करे सो परम गति पाए ॥४॥
The supreme status is obtained only by those who are blessed with His Glance of Grace. ||4||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥
Anthar Saach Baahar Saach Varathaaeae ||
अंतरि साचु बाहरि साचु वरताए ॥
One who has Truth pervading within, radiates Truth outwardly as well.
ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਛਪੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਰਖੈ ਛਪਾਏ ॥
Saach N Shhapai Jae Ko Rakhai Shhapaaeae ||
साचु न छपै जे को रखै छपाए ॥
The Truth does not remain hidden, even though one may try to hide it.
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੫॥
Giaanee Boojhehi Sehaj Subhaaeae ||5||
गिआनी बूझहि सहजि सुभाए ॥५॥
The spiritually wise know this intuitively. ||5||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
Guramukh Saach Rehiaa Liv Laaeae ||
गुरमुखि साचि रहिआ लिव लाए ॥
The Gurmukhs keep their consciousness lovingly centered on the Lord.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
Houmai Maaeiaa Sabadh Jalaaeae ||
हउमै माइआ सबदि जलाए ॥
Ego and Maya are burned away by the Word of the Shabad.
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੬॥
Maeraa Prabh Saachaa Mael Milaaeae ||6||
मेरा प्रभु साचा मेलि मिलाए ॥६॥
My True God unites them in His Union. ||6||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
Sathigur Dhaathaa Sabadh Sunaaeae ||
सतिगुरु दाता सबदु सुणाए ॥
The True Guru, The Giver, preaches the Shabad.
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
Dhhaavath Raakhai Thaak Rehaaeae ||
धावतु राखै ठाकि रहाए ॥
He controls, and restrains, and holds still the wandering mind.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
Poorae Gur Thae Sojhee Paaeae ||7||
पूरे गुर ते सोझी पाए ॥७॥
Understanding is obtained through the Perfect Guru. ||7||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਿਰਜਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥
Aapae Karathaa Srisatt Siraj Jin Goee ||
आपे करता स्रिसटि सिरजि जिनि गोई ॥
The Creator Himself has created the universe; He Himself shall destroy it.
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
This Bin Dhoojaa Avar N Koee ||
तिसु बिनु दूजा अवरु न कोई ॥
Without Him, there is no other at all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੮॥੬॥

The Gurmukhs obtain the Naam, the Priceless Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਮੋ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
Naamo Saevae Naam Sehaj Samaavai ||
नामो सेवे नामि सहजि समावै ॥
They serve the Name, and through the Name, they are absorbed in intuitive peace and poise.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
Anmrith Naam Rasanaa Nith Gaavai ||
अम्रितु नामु रसना नित गावै ॥
With their tongues, they continually sing the Ambrosial Naam.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
Jis No Kirapaa Karae So Har Ras Paavai ||1||
जिस नो क्रिपा करे सो हरि रसु पावै ॥१॥
They obtain the Lord's Name; the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||1||
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜਪਉ ਜਗਦੀਸਾ ॥
Anadhin Hiradhai Japo Jagadheesaa ||
अनदिनु हिरदै जपउ जगदीसा ॥
Night and day, within your heart, meditate on the Lord of the Universe.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਉ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਸੂਖਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Hiradhai Sookh Bhaeiaa Paragaas ||
हिरदै सूखु भइआ परगासु ॥
Peace comes to fill the hearts of those
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
Guramukh Gaavehi Sach Gunathaas ||
गुरमुखि गावहि सचु गुणतासु ॥
Who, as Gurmukh, sing of the True Lord, the treasure of excellence.
ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦਾਸੁ ॥
Dhaasan Dhaas Nith Hovehi Dhaas ||
दासनि दास नित होवहि दासु ॥
They become the constant slaves of the slaves of the Lord's slaves.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
Grih Kuttanb Mehi Sadhaa Oudhaas ||2||
ग्रिह कुट्मब महि सदा उदासु ॥२॥
Within their households and families, they remain always detached. ||2||
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋ ਹੋਈ ॥
Jeevan Mukath Guramukh Ko Hoee ||
जीवन मुकतु गुरमुखि को होई ॥
How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, become Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive.
ਪਰਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
Param Padhaarathh Paavai Soee ||
परम पदारथु पावै सोई ॥
They alone obtain the supreme treasure.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
Thrai Gun Maettae Niramal Hoee ||
त्रै गुण मेटे निरमलु होई ॥
Eradicating the three qualities, they become pure.
ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
Sehajae Saach Milai Prabh Soee ||3||
सहजे साचि मिलै प्रभु सोई ॥३॥
They are intuitively absorbed in the True Lord God. ||3||
ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
Moh Kuttanb Sio Preeth N Hoe ||
मोह कुट्मब सिउ प्रीति न होइ ॥
Emotional attachment to family does not exist,
ਜਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
Jaa Hiradhai Vasiaa Sach Soe ||
जा हिरदै वसिआ सचु सोइ ॥
When the True Lord abides within the heart.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Guramukh Man Baedhhiaa Asathhir Hoe ||
गुरमुखि मनु बेधिआ असथिरु होइ ॥
The mind of the Gurmukh is pierced through and held steady.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
Hukam Pashhaanai Boojhai Sach Soe ||4||
हुकमु पछाणै बूझै सचु सोइ ॥४॥
One who recognizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command understands the True Lord. ||4||
ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
Thoon Karathaa Mai Avar N Koe ||
तूं करता मै अवरु न कोइ ॥
You are the Creator Lord - there is no other for me.
ਤੁਝੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
Thujh Saevee Thujh Thae Path Hoe ||
तुझु सेवी तुझ ते पति होइ ॥
I serve You, and through You, I obtain honor.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਗਾਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
Kirapaa Karehi Gaavaa Prabh Soe ||
किरपा करहि गावा प्रभु सोइ ॥
God showers His Mercy, and I sing His Praises.
ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਇ ॥੫॥
Naam Rathan Sabh Jag Mehi Loe ||5||
नाम रतनु सभ जग महि लोइ ॥५॥
The light of the jewel of the Naam permeates the entire world. ||5||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
Guramukh Baanee Meethee Laagee ||
गुरमुखि बाणी मीठी लागी ॥
To the Gurmukhs, the Word of God's Bani seems so sweet.
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
Anthar Bigasai Anadhin Liv Laagee ||
अंतरु बिगसै अनदिनु लिव लागी ॥
Deep within, their hearts blossom forth; night and day, they lovingly center themselves on the Lord.
ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ॥
Sehajae Sach Miliaa Parasaadhee ||
सहजे सचु मिलिआ परसादी ॥
The True Lord is intuitively obtained, by His Grace.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਪੂਰੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੬॥
Sathigur Paaeiaa Poorai Vaddabhaagee ||6||
सतिगुरु पाइआ पूरै वडभागी ॥६॥
The True Guru is obtained by the destiny of perfect good fortune. ||6||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੁਖ ਨਾਸੁ ॥
Houmai Mamathaa Dhuramath Dhukh Naas ||
हउमै ममता दुरमति दुख नासु ॥
Egotism, possessiveness, evil-mindedness and suffering depart,
ਜਬ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
Jab Hiradhai Raam Naam Gunathaas ||
जब हिरदै राम नाम गुणतासु ॥
When the Lord's Name, the Ocean of Virtue, comes to dwell within the heart.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਸੁ ॥
Guramukh Budhh Pragattee Prabh Jaas ||
गुरमुखि बुधि प्रगटी प्रभ जासु ॥
The intellect of the Gurmukhs is awakened, and they praise God,
ਜਬ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਵਿਆ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੭॥
Jab Hiradhai Raviaa Charan Nivaas ||7||
जब हिरदै रविआ चरण निवासु ॥७॥
When the Lord's Lotus Feet come to dwell within the heart. ||7||
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਇ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
Jis Naam Dhaee Soee Jan Paaeae ||
जिसु नामु देइ सोई जनु पाए ॥
They alone receive the Naam, unto whom it is given.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
Guramukh Maelae Aap Gavaaeae ||
गुरमुखि मेले आपु गवाए ॥
The Gurmukhs shed their ego, and merge with the Lord.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
Hiradhai Saachaa Naam Vasaaeae ||
हिरदै साचा नामु वसाए ॥
The True Name abides within their hearts.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੮॥੭॥

नानक सहजे साचि समाए ॥८॥७॥
O Nanak, they are intuitively absorbed in the True Lord. ||8||7||
