Dhoojai Bhaae Dhaith Sanghaarae ||
दूजै भाइ दैत संघारे ॥
Because of the love of duality, God killed the demons.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥
Guramukh Saach Bhagath Nisathaarae ||8||
गुरमुखि साचि भगति निसतारे ॥८॥
By their true devotion, the Gurmukhs have been saved. ||8||
ਬੂਡਾ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
Booddaa Dhurajodhhan Path Khoee ||
बूडा दुरजोधनु पति खोई ॥
Sinking down, Durodhan lost his honor.
ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥
Raam N Jaaniaa Karathaa Soee ||
रामु न जानिआ करता सोई ॥
He did not know the Creator Lord.
ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੂਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੯॥
Jan Ko Dhookh Pachai Dhukh Hoee ||9||
जन कउ दूखि पचै दुखु होई ॥९॥
One who makes the Lord's humble servant suffer, shall himself suffer and rot. ||9||
ਜਨਮੇਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
Janamaejai Gur Sabadh N Jaaniaa ||
जनमेजै गुर सबदु न जानिआ ॥
Janameja did not know the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥
Kio Sukh Paavai Bharam Bhulaaniaa ||
किउ सुखु पावै भरमि भुलानिआ ॥
Deluded by doubt, how could he find peace?
ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥੧੦॥
Eik Thil Bhoolae Bahur Pashhuthaaniaa ||10||
इकु तिलु भूले बहुरि पछुतानिआ ॥१०॥
Making a mistake, for even an instant, you shall regret and repent later on. ||10||
ਕੰਸੁ ਕੇਸੁ ਚਾਂਡੂਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
Kans Kaes Chaanddoor N Koee ||
कंसु केसु चांडूरु न कोई ॥
Kansa the King and his warriors Kays and Chandoor had no equals.
ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
Raam N Cheeniaa Apanee Path Khoee ||
रामु न चीनिआ अपनी पति खोई ॥
But they did not remember the Lord, and they lost their honor.
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧੧॥

बिनु जगदीस न राखै कोई ॥११॥
Without the Lord of the Universe, no one can be saved. ||11||
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

बिनु गुर गरबु न मेटिआ जाइ ॥
Without the Guru, pride cannot be eradicated.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

गुरमति धरमु धीरजु हरि नाइ ॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, one obtains Dharmic faith, composure and the Lord's Name.

पाट पट्मबर पहिरि हढावउ ॥
I may dress up and wear silk and satin clothes.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੧॥

बिनु हरि नाम कहा सुखु पावउ ॥१॥
But without the Lord's Name, where would I find peace? ||1||

किआ पहिरउ किआ ओढि दिखावउ ॥
So what should I wear? In what clothes should I display myself?

कानी कुंडल गलि मोतीअन की माला ॥
I may wear ear-rings, and a pearl necklace around my neck;
ਲਾਲ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ਫੂਲ ਗੁਲਾਲਾ ॥
Laal Nihaalee Fool Gulaalaa ||
लाल निहाली फूल गुलाला ॥
My bed may be adorned with red blankets, flowers and red powder;
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਲਾ ॥੨॥

बिनु जगदीस कहा सुखु भाला ॥२॥
But without the Lord of the Universe, where can I search for peace? ||2||

नैन सलोनी सुंदर नारी ॥
I may have a beautiful woman with fascinating eyes;
ਖੋੜ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਕਰੈ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
Khorr Seegaar Karai Ath Piaaree ||
खोड़ सीगार करै अति पिआरी ॥
She may decorate herself with the sixteen adornments, and make herself appear gorgeous.
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਭਜੇ ਨਿਤ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੩॥
Bin Jagadhees Bhajae Nith Khuaaree ||3||
बिनु जगदीस भजे नित खुआरी ॥३॥
But without meditating on the Lord of the Universe, there is only continual suffering. ||3||
ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ॥
Dhar Ghar Mehalaa Saej Sukhaalee ||
दर घर महला सेज सुखाली ॥
In his hearth and home, in his palace, upon his soft and comfortable bed,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਫੂਲ ਬਿਛਾਵੈ ਮਾਲੀ ॥
Ahinis Fool Bishhaavai Maalee ||
अहिनिसि फूल बिछावै माली ॥
Day and night, the flower-girls scatter flower petals;
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੁ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖਾਲੀ ॥੪॥
Bin Har Naam S Dhaeh Dhukhaalee ||4||
बिनु हरि नाम सु देह दुखाली ॥४॥
But without the Lord's Name, the body is miserable. ||4||
ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ॥
Haivar Gaivar Naejae Vaajae ||
हैवर गैवर नेजे वाजे ॥
Horses, elephants, lances, marching bands,
ਲਸਕਰ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਪਾਜੇ ॥
Lasakar Naeb Khavaasee Paajae ||
लसकर नेब खवासी पाजे ॥
Armies, standard bearers, royal attendants and ostentatious displays
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਝੂਠੇ ਦਿਵਾਜੇ ॥੫॥
Bin Jagadhees Jhoothae Dhivaajae ||5||
बिनु जगदीस झूठे दिवाजे ॥५॥
- without the Lord of the Universe, these undertakings are all useless. ||5||
ਸਿਧੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਬੁਲਾਵਉ ॥
Sidhh Kehaavo Ridhh Sidhh Bulaavo ||
सिधु कहावउ रिधि सिधि बुलावउ ॥
He may be called a Siddha, a man of spiritual perfection, and he may summon riches and supernatural powers;
ਤਾਜ ਕੁਲਹ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਤ੍ਰੁ ਬਨਾਵਉ ॥
Thaaj Kuleh Sir Shhathra Banaavo ||
ताज कुलह सिरि छत्रु बनावउ ॥
He may place a crown upon his head, and carry a royal umbrella;
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਉ ॥੬॥
Bin Jagadhees Kehaa Sach Paavo ||6||
बिनु जगदीस कहा सचु पावउ ॥६॥
But without the Lord of the Universe, where can Truth be found? ||6||
ਖਾਨੁ ਮਲੂਕੁ ਕਹਾਵਉ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
Khaan Malook Kehaavo Raajaa ||
खानु मलूकु कहावउ राजा ॥
He may be called an emperor, a lord, and a king;
ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੂੜੇ ਹੈ ਪਾਜਾ ॥
Abae Thabae Koorrae Hai Paajaa ||
अबे तबे कूड़े है पाजा ॥
He may give orders - ""Do this now, do this then"" - but this is a false display.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਸਵਰਸਿ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੭॥
Bin Gur Sabadh N Savaras Kaajaa ||7||
बिनु गुर सबद न सवरसि काजा ॥७॥
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, his works are not accomplished. ||7||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
Houmai Mamathaa Gur Sabadh Visaaree ||
हउमै ममता गुर सबदि विसारी ॥
Egotism and possessiveness are dispelled by the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥

गुरमति जानिआ रिदै मुरारी ॥
With the Guru's Teachings in my heart, I have come to know the Lord.

परपंच बिआधि तिआगै कवरे ॥
They abandon the bitter worldly conflicts.
ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
Bhaae Milai Sach Saachai Sach Rae ||1||
भाइ मिलै सचु साचै सचु रे ॥१॥
Through love and truth, they meet the Truest of the True. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

ऐसा राम भगतु जनु होई ॥
Such are the humble devotees of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हरि गुण गाइ मिलै मलु धोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and their pollution is washed away. ||1||Pause||
ਊਂਧੋ ਕਵਲੁ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥
Oonadhho Kaval Sagal Sansaarai ||
ऊंधो कवलु सगल संसारै ॥
The heart-lotus of the entire universe is upside-down.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਰਜਾਰੈ ॥
Dhuramath Agan Jagath Parajaarai ||
दुरमति अगनि जगत परजारै ॥
The fire of evil-mindedness is burning up the world.
ਸੋ ਉਬਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੨॥
So Oubarai Gur Sabadh Beechaarai ||2||
सो उबरै गुर सबदु बीचारै ॥२॥
They alone are saved, who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||
ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਅਰੁ ਮੀਨਾ ॥
Bhring Pathang Kunchar Ar Meenaa ||
भ्रिंग पतंगु कुंचरु अरु मीना ॥
The bumble bee, the moth, the elephant, the fish
ਮਿਰਗੁ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਨਾ ॥
Mirag Marai Sehi Apunaa Keenaa ||
मिरगु मरै सहि अपुना कीना ॥
And the deer - all suffer for their actions, and die.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਤਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਨਾ ॥੩॥
Thrisanaa Raach Thath Nehee Beenaa ||3||
त्रिसना राचि ततु नही बीना ॥३॥
Trapped by desire, they cannot see reality. ||3||
ਕਾਮੁ ਚਿਤੈ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥
Kaam Chithai Kaaman Hithakaaree ||
कामु चितै कामणि हितकारी ॥
The lover of women is obsessed with sex.
ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥
Krodhh Binaasai Sagal Vikaaree ||
क्रोधु बिनासै सगल विकारी ॥
All the wicked are ruined by their anger.
ਪਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
Path Math Khovehi Naam Visaaree ||4||
पति मति खोवहि नामु विसारी ॥४॥
Honor and good sense are lost, when one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||
